I'm leaning toward using this OSB:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_12218-99899...6&Ntt=osb&pl=1&currentURL=?Ntt=osb&facetInfo=

vs this one for the walls of my new pole barn

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbrande...ted-Strand-Board-Square-Edge-339696/100088796

The OSB from Lowes is an underlayment OSB with tongue and groove.

The OSB from Home Depot is a non tongue and groove sheathing product.

I assume the OSB would look the same for both products, but the T&G from Lowes would be more stable because of the T&G ?

Would an underlayment OSB be as "smooth" as a sheathing OSB ? My plans are to polyurethane the OSB. Assuming the OSB are essentially the same, it seems the Lowes is the better product: thicker, has T&G ?

Opinion please !!!

I did the inside of my garage in 7/16 osb and also did the ceiling too. I would not use t and g. You don't need the thicker product either. On thing to make mention of is that the osb has two sides. One has traction as if your going to put it on a roof the other is super smooth and would paint real nice.

I used OSB laid horizontally next to the floor and drywall the other 8' to the ceiling. I wanted the strength of the OSB on the lower part of the wall. (not easy to poke holes through) That was 10 years ago when it was a LOT cheaper.

The reason for T&G underlayment is to prevent squeaking when walking over it.
Unless you plan on walking on your walls,
you do not need it.

I put 7/16 OSB on walls and ceiling of last garage and left smooth side out for painting. My experience was a lot of the wood flakes peeled after painting. Some say to leave traction side out and will not peel when painted... I moved and started to build a new 30 x 36 garage and want to use OSB again and paint. Anyone have painting experience on OSB? Good or bad?

Used the square edge OSB on my walls. No need for the T&G, and 7/16 is plenty thick enough. I caulked between panels and painted with oil based Kilz. Looks and works great, no complaints and would do the same again.

I covered 150 lf of wall with OSB smooth side out and painted with two coats of latex. Only had a couple of small flakes come loose.
