I had the fortune of getting my first covid vaccine last Friday. The shot was administered at a local grocery store pharmacy in Gonzales county which is a couple of counties southeast from where I live in Austin. Just so happens that I have some early Texas ancestors from there. So after my covid shot I headed over to the county courthouse to see what additional information I could find. My gr-gr-GF was born in Gonzales county in 1856. His father came to Texas from MS between 1851-1854. He died there in 1877. They had a manilla folder on my gr-gr-gr-GF's probate with original legal papers related to his estate from 1877-1889 when the estate was finally closed. There were many of these papers with folds and additional pages glued/pasted together at the sides or the ends. Every single place where these pages were fastened together was as solid as if they had been done yesterday not 140+ years ago. Made me wonder what the heck kind of glue/paste they would have been using that would still be that good after all that time? I should have examined closely how they fastened the sheets together. I go back for shot #2 in a month and I'll be back at the courthouse. It was remarkable. Sorry it took me so long to get to the point of the post. Bad habit.

Did you touch those pages? You will possibly get terminal diarrhea. Or cancer, or lockjaw. Stuff like glue was made from horses. Or cows.
Go find a PI lawyer who will sue on your behalf.

BTW - we had a similar fun story and experience.
A year ago we found a letter signed by FDR when he was Asst Sec of the Navy. It granted my grandfather’s request to join the Navy during WW1. He was a dentist and was not eligible to join without such endorsement/permission.

I have all the 3 x 5" notebooks my grandparents used to study for their citizenship exam. Listing all the states, capitals, senators, branches of government. Alphabet and about 100 common misspelled words. Paperwork from all the trips my GF needed to take a boat back and forth from Europe... in the 1920s. Also got their papers showing their parents etc.

Strangest thing I found was... when my father came thru Elis Island... they changed his last name and screwed up his birthdate.

So I technically am not who I thought I was...

I also found out... my Mothers maiden name is NOT what I was told when I opened my first bank account with my father at 8 yrs old.

Discoveries... some are interesting... some are shocking.

Forgot to mention my GF worked in a glass manufacturer... they used horse glue to make "Gluechip Glass"... a very popular glass treatment...

Forgive the confusion... I was responding while experiencing a mind altering sugar low and got all nostalgic.

Carry on... nothing is glued down here.

Pines good to hear you aren’t coming unglued.
I was thinking about it and was sure glue used to be made of horse hooves. So looked it up quick.
Glue, historically, is indeed made from collagen taken from animal parts, particularly horse hooves and bones. In fact, the word “collagen” comes from the Greek kolla, glue.

TXLonghorn I don’t doubt that was horse hoof glue.

Which may have been called Hide Glue. Still Available today, and preferred by antique restorers due to its reversibility.

The brown Titebond bottle is a weak Imitation of hide glue, according to my antique book restorer friend,. The good stuff comes in granules, with a specific melting temp for each need, and is made up in small quantities as you need it.
