Also, add this Fahrenheat FUH724 heater. I made the mount which allows me to turn the heater towards either end of the garage. Still need to clean up the mount and paint it. Have not gotten the first electric bill but it keeps the garage at 60 degrees with no problems. I added a fan in the ceiling to direct warm air down and plan to add two small ceiling fans in the future.

What are your thoughts on the Fahrenheat heater? My father is wanting the FUH5-4 for his shop. He went to Northern Tool to look at one, but the only thing they stock is the Profusion and tried to sway him to buy that brand. He is still set on the Fahrenheat, so we will be glad to see what other people think of them.

So far I love the heater for this size garage and our location. It is quiet and keeps the garage nice and warm. I usually only run it when I’m in the shop working and it takes about 15 minutes to bring up the temp. Lately we have been in the high 20’s to low 30’s at night with daytime temps in the high 40’s to mid 50’s. No polar vortex here but we are in the high desert at about 4000 feet. I keep it on the low setting and it cycles on and off maybe three or four times an hour. I have not received an electric bill since I started running it but will post if it is crazy!!

Thanks! I used the heater a lot in January as we finished up the Scout 80 and I was pleasantly surprised that the electric bill did not go up appreciably. Also, well, we are part of the crazy weather but the opposite of the east coast. We were in the 80’s this past weekend and have had a very warm winter. So the heater has not been needed as much so far.

I have plans to move all of my tools into the bench toolboxes but have not had time yet to set it up. The plan is to use foam from this company: Cascade Tool & Foam I have used it before and really liked it. One of many projects we need to get started on!!

The Scout 80 is done so hopefully I can pay more attention to the garage!

Hey thanks! We have been watching your build and that is going to be one sweet Scout when you are done! Hope you don’t mind but you may see some similar mods incorporated into our newest build – it is a 69 V8 800A. Plan on doing something like the Xtreme 4X4 shows 69 Scout. We usually post on the Binder Builds thread. Our other two builds on BP 1977 SSII and 1965 S 80 if your interested. This latest one my daughter bought so will slow my garage build/progress down a bit but we are in the garage almost every day!

Wow Jay! Incredible...all of it. I just finished reading this thread from start to finish. You have been working on it a long time but I think it has come out top notch to say the least. I'll be using this thread for ideas as I start my interior build. I'm curious how the swamp cooler will work in Central Texas as we have minimum 50% humidity most all the time. As for the heater, I have an old gas heater that came out of a gas station garage and I'm hoping to convert it to propane but the swivel idea is perfect. Since mine is 30'x50', not sure if either of these heaters/coolers will be sufficient. Are you still happy with the insulation? We get some cold months but mostly hot so that looks very appealing to me for my shop. The electrician is coming out this week so I have to figure out just how much I will need. I could go on and on but needless to say, you have set a great example for us all to strive for in our workshops. I also like the name the "Scout Den"...since I have a pickup, a Travelette, and a Scout, not sure what the name will be but it will have IH in it for sure.

I think the swamp cooler in your area may not be the best approach. It has to be pretty dry to make it function properly and I would fear this would just add more humidity. Maybe one of those mini splits?

I would say the insulation provided by Mueller is minimal – great in mild conditions but I would add more if winters here were more sever. We can get by with a light coat most winters.

It sure sounds like you have the IH bug bad! They multiply like rabbits!

Thanks! I have to admit the bench fill has been put on the back burner a bit due to another scout project. I’m using every drawer but with parts verses tools. I’m still using my rollaway for the tools but the plan is to move all of that into the bench properly!

An office near mine shut down and I was able to score these drawers for free. Painted them to match the bench.

I installed some of these bins to hold hardware in a few of the drawers.

Well sorry I have not updated this but we have been working on the 69 and it has taken up a lot of time and more $ than I anticipated! Still in the mockup stage!

I did manage to get an overhead beam installed for a shop crane and well worth the effort! I got the CM chain hoist locally off of craigslist for $40 bucks and the R&M RPT1000 trolley off of Ebay.

I also started to add a little more light. With some research and input I read here on GJ I added one 8ft 54T5HO light fixture I got at Home Depot.

All I can say is WOW!!! I find I’m working more on the other end of the garage away from the bench and lighting was not adequate. Love the output of this fixture. Will probably add a few more as time and money permits.

Wow! Time – where does it go?? I am way behind updating this build!
We have been concentrating on the 69 Scout build but recently that project was put on hold while I knocked out some long neglected honey-do’s and some (finally!) work on the garage.

I have been using a Craftsman oilless 33 gallon compressor and, although a decent compressor, it is very frustrating trying to sandblast with. Finally broke down and got a new compressor. It is a Quincy QT-54 we got from Northern Tools.

After listening to the old compressor grind away we knew it was going in its own room. I had poured a 4X4 pad with initial pad pour on the north side of the garage but went ahead and expanded that to 4X8. Welded up a frame and add another man door to this side of the garage for access. Of course this took a few more weekends then we thought it would before we could add the siding!

We had some excess siding leftover from the initial garage build and only needed some trim to finish it.

We are now calling this the “compressor condo”!! Inside view:

Still need to add an exhaust fan but very happy with the results.

With the new compressor we searched on GJ for the best system to plumb air into the shop. We decided on black pipe and most was bought at Lowes and HD. Pretty much followed the TP Tools diagram and tips I found here on GJ.



Here is the initial plan:

Almost 20' of pipe before the first filter which is a Sharpe 707F

On this end we used a Sharpe 606A at the sandblast cabinet and an older AmFlo filter and regulator at the center.

The center line feeds a Craftsman reel we mounted near the lift.

We used a Katko KEM340UL Y/R Motor Disconnect Switch since the compressor is in another room. I got this one off of Ebay.

Installed a Moisture Minder automatic drain at the bottom of the tank and plumbed the discharge line outside.

Also upgraded all of the fittings with Prevost Safety Quick Couplers. Really like using these – so smooth!

Daughter bought me a Craftsman bench grinder for Christmas and we used some scrap metal we had to make a stand. May add some wheels on this.

Added an extension cord reel we got from Northern Tools on the other side of the lift.

….and finally installed four of the Sam’s Club LED lights on the bench side of the garage. Plan is to add six more on the other end and replace the fluorescent ones I installed earlier. Really happy with these!!

Project wise we have completed most of the drivetrain on the 69 Scout and need to finish body and paint work. Here is how it is sitting now.

We did fab up our own bumpers. Not fun but we think they turned out pretty good.

Finally started organizing and putting my tools in the work bench. Foam is from Cascade Tool & Foam. Went with the Value Line 4-lb XPE ½ blue for top and ¼ red bottom from their specials page. Got a couple done and will work on the rest this week.

Thanks! I get a little compulsive-obsessive when I get on a project and the garage has taken a back seat to the 69 Scout build. Its been used and abused so good to take a step back and give it a little attention!! I’ve got a few other projects lined up for the garage including an awning over the side door and some more of the LED lighting on the inside. The air system has definitely been worth the time and effort. Wish I had done it earlier now!
