Sorry about your latest snowstorm; we hit 100F for the first time this year yesterday:(
I've thought about it and I think I'd rather have some snow in April than 100F in April !!

Congrats on the new addition to the stable.

We've evened out the sheds and now have three red ones and three green ones. It will make seating arrangements in the sheds easier and they all have a buddy now :lol_hitti

Nice work!
You can never have too many tractors.
I keep telling that to Mama Bear and she fails to understand. I just tell her that I'm gathering for an auction one day :bounce:

Just need to convince her that every implement needs it’s own tractor. It’s a time and labor savings plan....Yep, that’s the ticket....:lol_hitti

35 years ago I told my wife I needed a tractor for each implement. Of course it's actually true for hay equipment. I had about ten tractors at the time. One day a few years later she was looking out the window and observed "you need more implements".

I like cowboy boots, and all I wore for many years. When I had 28 tractors I was cleaning out my closet and counted eleven pair of boots. I told her something was wrong, I had more tractors than individual boots. She suggested I buy more boots.

You can't have too many tractors.

5510 looks nice, those suitcase weights still bring good money?

ain't that the truth.
I get to have fun with my retirement account everyday on the farm. Not many people can say that !!

Nice for a JD, although you'll be bashing those weights into everything with the longer tractor.
I'll have to take some closer pictures sometime. It is definitely a looks good from 30' kind of deal but it runs out well and seems to do what a tractor does just fine. Time will tell !!

I thought about adding up how many implements we have but then I realized I can't even count how many tractors we have so it seemed pointless. There are four green tractors and three red ones in the shed. Not sure which Deere I forgot about but seems I forgot one :headscrat

Andy I wish my wife shared the thought path yours does. I'd have sheds full of tractors !!!

I've never worn a pair of cowboy boots but have thought many times about getting a pair ... or two ...

There are certain things you can never have too many of and tractors are one of them that's for sure !!

Bout a dollar a pound Andy.
From my findings that is spot on. About a dollar a pound. So's I got about $500 of weights with my tractor which makes it an even better deal. Add the 3pt quick hitch in the mix and that makes it even sweeter yet !!

We did the Easter Day shuffle and had lunch at the in-laws and supper at my parents place. Leo had a blast playing in the leaves by my parents place and got them EVERYWHERE !!!

After we were all back home I decided to fire up the newly completed FreeNAS server. Seems it wouldn't POST so I did some checking and the RAM I purchased isn't on the approved list on the manufactures webpage for this motherboard. WTF. I thought I checked that ..... Grrrrr ...
33796204348_7441083600_z.jpg

Late last summer we hired a guy at Leedstone that is "supposed" to start helping me with more of the IT stuff. Ya know, be me when I can't be on-site and such. Well today I ran across some work he did a few weeks back and I think I'm gonna beat him with a dead chicken when I see him again. These RJ45 ends look like garbage !! Certainly not up to the "be me when I can't be there" standards ....
47620765352_da57414c23_z.jpg

Get the wires all trimmed nicely and pushed through the RJ45EZ end and fan them out to make sure they are in the correct order ....
47620765482_14a6590645_z.jpg

Crimp it tight and enjoy one more end done nicely. Doesn't seem that hard ... ESPECIALLY with the EZ ends :shocking:
40707327343_2f1d5547bc_z.jpg

Tonight Dad and I got the steer barn posts prepped to go in the ground whenever concrete will be poured. We welded about a foot of old bed frame to each one to prevent them from spinning once installed. Dad is grinding the rusty goober off the oil well pipe so I can make a nice weld.
40707327523_3735b4e572_z.jpg

Doesn't need to be fancy as they'll be burred soon

Yuck, I remember crimping ends on CAT5E cable. Still have a spool, but my last 50' cord for the dorm was $5...delivered...with the ends already on.

On the way home today I met a familiar looking rig hauling corn to down to fill a contract. Dad made 6 trips to town with a smidge over 1,000bu per load. Not too shabby.
40716962373_cf4657490d_z.jpg

The little people crew helped with chores again tonight. I caught them conspiring against me a few times. "Hey, lets tip all the forks and shovels over and see what Dad does" is the outcome of this one. Goofballs.
33805736698_40d980905b_z.jpg

The feed truck spilled a little feed and they were very concerned the chickens were going to get hungry because their food was on the ground. Alyssa was particularly worked up and I had to go get a pail so they could pick some of it up for me to give to the chickens later. :lol_hitti
47630242192_df022b6268_z.jpg

He is thinking the same thing as I am. "Boy that'd be fun to jump in that puddle !!" I refrained, Leo however promptly splashed all the water out of the puddle and into his little boots. He kept saying "Uh Oh" the rest of the way back to the house because his feet were wet.

JBL: I know it's hard to involve the kids in your chores, but dang the pictures are cute and i'm sure they make you smile more than not. more DAD OF THE YEAR POINTS that is for certain!!

great scores at the auction. one thing that might be driving up the costs of the tractor weights is some guys buy and use them in their home gyms cause they like the handles.

great pic of dad driving that huge rig through your town!!

keep up the great work and looks like maybe you are getting a bit of spring weather now so congrats.

Boy, he's getting big.

No kidding. I'm excited the kiddos are getting bigger and are able to do more things but at the same time, they're getting bigger and before I know it they'll be off to college and beyond :headscrat

All things considered they make me smile. It's a bit taxing on the ol' nerves when they come out with me because I need to keep an eye out for them but it's still a lot of fun !!

Tractor weights in a home gym ?? I could put those people to use out here picking rocks or doing something worthwhile !!

That entire rig is just shy of 95,000lbs in that picture

Spring is FINALLY HERE !!!!!! It got up to 75F here today and I got a rude reminder that when it gets warm I need to make sure the ventilation is ready for it in the chicken barn. It called because it ran out of fans to start because I didn't add more into the available list this morning. No big deal to do it, I just forgot it was FINALLY going to be warm !!

It's been a busy few days and I'm slacking on updates :shocking:

Wednesday Dad started cleaning out the barn and spreading it right on the field behind my house. I finished up the two little pens Wednesday evening.
47650814092_88ebf729b5_z.jpg

Oh yeah spread that poop !!!
46787821145_357298f1d8_z.jpg

Once I got the barn finished up I started in on the pile in the **** shack. There is a LOT of poop in here to be hauled !!
47650814112_1ece0538b9_z.jpg

Dad went out with the finishing disk to get some spring wheat ground ready to plant. He got through every area of the field, even the spots that are usually a little wet !!
47650814162_eff5142df2_z.jpg

We dried and are storing some corn for a neighbor and he wanted to load it out Thursday morning. The 55yr old 5hp motor tried to start and wouldn't do it. Now what ?!?!
46787821225_8281ec8741_z.jpg

Good grief !! I'm guessing that the starting capacitors just might need to be replaced :lol_hitti
47650813882_0ec86178d1_z.jpg

I put new capacitors in and it fired right up !! Whoo Hoo !!
47650814282_d9367d14c3_z.jpg

The old screws were a ****** to remove so I cleaned out the holes and put some anti-seize on them when I put them back in.
46787821375_b29dd93414_z.jpg

After the neighbor was loaded up we went into the storage container to dig out the spring wheat. Dad put it in totes and it works very well. It has to be pailed out though
47650814192_e029252e0d_z.jpg

Get after it Pops !!
46787821535_37bf8e3120_z.jpg

There was moisture under the two inside totes for some reason. Seems odd ...
46787820965_8ef030faa5_z.jpg

Dad pulled the grain drill out and I went back home to level this pile of dirt out. It got put here last summer when I had extra black dirt from the stacking slab project.
46787821615_92191a2183_z.jpg

I got it roughly spread out into a low spot in the field with the mini-ex.
32760687527_45b6bb8109_z.jpg

And came back and made it much nicer with the skiddy and the land leveler. The more I use this leveler the more I like it !!!
47650814362_ba2b84aa55_z.jpg

After I got the dirt leveled out I headed out in the ol' work van to Green Bay, WI for work. I will be looking over a few things at a dairy we will be installing another SmartBow system at. My wonderful Mother took some pictures and sent them to me to use "on that garage blog thing" :lol_hitti

Dad started to roll the wheat fields to push any rocks down and make for a nice firm seedbed.
46787821005_735ebf87df_z.jpg
46787820915_4de78eabf5_z.jpg

I'm pretty sure the last thing this drill seeded was spring wheat but you always need to check it to make sure it's still spot on !!
47650814002_f4c1542e13_z.jpg

Look at him go !! Plant them spring wheaties !!!

JBL: great progress and you and your dad (and mom) are busy as per usual. you might be on to something mentioning having the city people come work on the farm even if only pulling rocks out of the field cause you can't buy that sort of exercise and with a HOW TO RUN AND WORK ON A FARM week (or weekend) they might even pay you work and learn.

a good excuse to build another building (and pay for a new and bigger house for your family) and maybe hire some of the old retired farmers that would love to share their knowledge with people willing to listen.

moving the **** around is a big job and looks like you and dad move it quickly.

very happy to see the snow and cold weather are behind you for another couple seasons so best of luck with the weather with this years crops.

cheers

1000 bushels with the 2 gravity wagons - any thought to add a semi to the fleet? Or are you just hauling locally a few times a year?

Love that lawn roller.... Could sure use that here in TN to push those rocks back down ....

AL
It's a 42' wide with 5/8" thick drums and weighs in around 24,000lbs. That'd make a heck of a lawn roller !!

Oh boy if we could figure out how to get people to pay us to work on the farm we'd feel like we hit the jackpot. The plan for this year is to plant a pumpkin patch and see if we can't peddle them on innocent passerby's

We've talked about a semi a number of times but we don't know how practical it is. Sounds silly but we can haul more corn in a day with the tractor and wagons than we could with a semi and grain trailer. Dad loads the wagons light, I usually fill 'em all the way and haul 1,250-1,300bu with them. A semi loaded legally around here can haul 880-950bu and it takes the same time to load and unload. There isn't much to be gained in trip time when the elevator is only 5 miles away.

It's not something we've ruled out but it's low on the list right now. Besides, we'd only have to make 50 trips to town to sell it all in a typical year. I feed a bunch to the steers so it's only 40ish trips :lol_hitti

JBL: Give mom a hug from us and a big thank you for taking the time to help with pictures. Can't every forget or minimize how much a spouse is part of a farm life. I'll hoist a big glass of ice tea in her honor.
No kidding. Mom is always there doing the most important stuff in the background. My mother and my wife are involved more than they know. They're there supporting us and keeping us sane !!

Single purpose semi tractor, trailer, license, insurance to haul 5 miles, that's not going to compute. And every time you want to use it, the batteries will be down and air leaks.

I would get a semi with a wet kit so I could use an end dump to haul chicken manure to the fields it'll be spread on as well. By the time all is said and done what it would cost in money wouldn't pay out for us in convenience and time saved. That's not to say it'll never happen but it won't be any time soon.

Plus, I don't ever remember hearing about someone getting an overweight ticket because they were too heavy while hauling in with their tractor and wagons. We are as respectful of spring road restrictions as possible and haven't ever seen the wagons damage a road yet.

Wife's Bil farms in central Illinois and runs a semi, and a dually with a triple axle gooseneck. Typical farmer, it's full when it's full 1000 bu on semi, 535 bu on gooseneck Overloaded LOL
State of Illinois was nice enough to waive gross weight during harvest .... didn't waive axle restrictions. Bunch of farmers got nailed being overweight on axle until the word got out. They got wagons for being overweight on bridges because of short wheelbase.

Another +1 for wagons. No legal weight limits. Also, we have no bridges to worry about here. I've never heard of anyone getting nabbed in a tractor for any sort of infraction up here.

I'm quite sure the DOT up here will cut some slack for semis coming out of fields as there is no great way to weigh them but I don't know how much.

Midway through my trip to Green Bay it became apparent that I needed a dash mount cell phone holder so I didn't have to hold it to watch the GPS on it. $5.88 later at WallyWorld I had a workable solution. Boy this is nice !!
46805090725_9bf2f0ee40_z.jpg

When I got back home I got to work filling the other field by my place up with steer manure but had to take a break to fuel up myself with some pizza and jalapeno poppers.
46805090605_ca6d79d1ac_z.jpg

Still lots of poop in the stacking slab but the pile is shrinking slowly ....
47721377531_3b39fd69e2_z.jpg

Well that's not good !!!!!
33844448348_988ca73cce_z.jpg

After spending an hour washing it all off the engine hoist came in handy again !!!
40755099173_c6a07f5a8c_z.jpg

I tried straightening the fins on the top beater with my 24" adjustable wrench but it didn't go well. Trying to bend 1/4" thick steel with it was too much for it and I couldn't get it done :(
32778262587_3dff20d020_z.jpg

Well it appears that the top beater is junk. Even if I could get them all straightened out I doubt it'll run true and will be out of balance causing bearings to fail prematurely. Grrrrr ......
47721377591_b74f3c310b_z.jpg

While the top beater was banging on the bottom beater it did a number on the bottom beater paddles. Most of them were cracked where they attached to the center tube !!
46805153805_2d99cd74d8_z.jpg
46805153995_1a68a1342c_z.jpg

Turn the heat up on the welder and glue it all back together !!
33844389468_d7229a3c7c_z.jpg

I removed the lower beater paddles that were bent up and will straighten them out in the press at dad's place. Sure looks funny with only beater.
40755099033_531a62a33d_z.jpg

This is the 1/4" thick steel housing for the drive side of the top beater. It is warped something awful and I hope I can get it back right in the press.

Sorry your manure spreader threw ****.

Wait, isn't that what it's for?
It's a crappy deal when the **** spreader takes a **** on itself. The worst part though is washing it all before you dive in to see what the problem is. Working on manure equipment is a crappy deal, no way around it, only one nasty way though it :lol_hitti

You guys don't use grain carts with scales from the field?
We load into wagons so no need for us. I have a few farmer buddies that run way more land than us that have scales on their carts. They have the amazing ability of knowing exactly what is in each truck. A lot of teh cart scales let you keep track of every pound of grain that goes into and out of the cart so it gives you the ability of checking the cart scales with the scales at the point of sale.

Sometimes they pull out their portable scales!

Big thanks to your mom.
Back when I drove the supplies truck for Leedstone I had the fortune of getting weighed on the side of the road a handful of times. Only got a ticket once though. Having "Dangerous" and "Corrosive" placards on the rig made us a big target in the area.

I don't know if Mom took any photos of our latest auction purchase on Saturday but I'll ask. Mom and Dad went to Drayton, ND to go to an auction and came home with a nice piece of red iron to add to the fleet !!

JBL: some of the big farms around here grow and sell the pumpkins and also have an acre or two of corn where they cut a maze or labyrinth for the kids and some of the parents to enjoy. CORN MAZES are somewhat popular around here. instead of using a field of corn some small farms use bales of hay to make a MAZE.

got any room for a huge pond for a U FISH that maybe LEO can work and pay his college tuition from the profits? not to mention some fresh fish for dinner now and then to mix it up with chicken and beef?

cheers and hope you had a great weekend!!

We've talked about the corn maze a few times. It may happen at some point in time out here !!

The son of a neighbor hunts my land during any and all seasons he can and provides us with more fish, venison, duck, quail and goose than we can eat. I told him I don't want any money to hunt our land and he is totally befuddled by that so he brings us meat instead. I'm not sure what hunting land brings up here but the meat sure is nice !!

Oooh, a Quadtrack?
Oh boy not yet :lol_hitti

This morning Dad and I moved the bus out of the field where's been since harvest and back towards my yard. It was sitting where he wanted to disk this morning and needed to go somewhere else !! He pulled me with the 5510 as the bus needs to get it's fuel tank cleaned out and doesn't run worth a **** with the old gas in there.
33851717748_a2d5d8f7cb_z.jpg

Leo and I went and watched Grandpa play with his big sandbox toys for a while this morning. He kept pointing and hollering "Grandpa" and "Tractor" pretty much nonstop. He had a blast.

Step 127: Let the kids play in their new playhouse. This took WAY too long to assemble but they love it !!

Paid for college by working on farm. Guy I worked for adopted the policy why should I fix what I tore up when I'm paying college boy and he needs the learning experience :) I mostly didn't mind, I needed the money and he was good to me. I did take exception to his International manure spreader. I'm sure in its day, it was a good piece of equipment, but in true farmer tradition, he made some adjustments to it because you can't spend all your time running back and forth on the road. He increased the capacity by putting 24 inches of sideboards on it and when he kept getting stuck in soft fields, he changed from single tires to larger dual tires on each side. My first experience with it, was showing up from college at 2pm and finding out he had snapped the drag chain and of course it was still mounded up full. After hand spreading it for 3 hours, I finally got it empty enough to hose it out and work on it. Took one look at the flighting and showed him it was shot and needed to be replaced. "it's not that bad, fix it" so I fixed it. Next day, I arrive to see the tractor and spreader sitting in the middle of the field. Yeah, again. He's nowhere to be found. I start shoveling it out again and I'm about 1/2 done and he shows up. "Been to the dealership, don't have drag chain in stock, will be two weeks before it gets here, so not going to order until fall. We only have about 10 loads and we'll be done. We're going to fix it and load it only half full and get done, okay?" So, I fixed it again, and knowing it was not in his nature to only fill it half full ... I took off the 24" sideboards :) Told him I hope it makes it because I would be inclined to use the scoop tractor to place it on top of the biggest burn pile and burn the POS to the ground. It made it, in fact the last time I saw it, the POS was sitting in a fence row and he told me he was going to will it to me :) Told him I would be glad to do what I should have done 50 years ago LOL
