I don't post here often, but read this thread every time I come through. It's like a new episode of AG PHD every time I'm here (I love that show).

Just never planted corn on a snow day.:wtf:
A few years back Dad was planting corn in a 1/4 mile long field and it started to snow and by the time he got to one end and about halfway back he couldn't see where the row marker was he needed to follow so he had to quit. Corn can take a bit of snow and it'll be fine, it really doesn't like cold and wet for just too long though. I sure hope it warms up or we're going to have a rough time of it this season ....

Sounds like you're making good on that sig line.

We've been looking for a larger/newer combine for a couple years and this one was such a good deal it had to come home. If it were listed at a dealer here in central MN they would have been asking a tad over double what we paid for it. I think we need to slow down though for a little bit and let the checkbook catch back up :lol_hitti

Thank you for checking in all the time !!!

I've been to a few Hefty Boys events and they are always a good time. My tight-*** doesn't have "TV" in the house so AG PHD TV is a no go for me. My Pops always talks about what he say on RFDTV and I have nothing to add other than what the Welker Farm guys are up to lately on YouTube :lol_hitti

On a side note you should update your own gallery thread. It ends with a nice looking half finished garage !!

I enjoy the show. Didn't grow up on a farm, or have any immediate family or friends that farmed (great aunt and uncle had a hobby farm, but had sold it before I was born). But there was farm land within a mile of the house, and all around us from there on out (central Illinois). Just always found it interesting. Then watching that TV show...all of the things that have to be considered, the various crops, seeds, chemicals, drainage, equipment, all the regs, all the pressures from the market...it's a fascinating, if stressful business. I just really enjoy learning about it. And then there's the "Weed of the Week"...who doesn't want to watch that feature each week! :lol_hitti

As for my shop, sadly, it probably looks pretty much like it did the last time I posted, except full of stuff now. The wife and I went through a streak of company down-sizings, job changes, company changes, the kids are in college...just never felt like I had the "free" money burning a hole in my pocket to finish it up. Still, completing the interior is never far from my mind, and hanging out here is certainly a bad influence. I'll get there, hopefully before arthritis or something else prevents me from actually USING the space.

Sounds like a classic case of farming fever. It's catchy and doesn't go away and there is no known cure. Playing farmer seems to help ease the symptoms but it'll take a lifetime to work it through your system !! Come on over and I'll see if we can't do a little to help

That stinks about the shop. Go buy a sheet of plywood or something every month and before you know it you'll be restoring Pontiac's on a nice lift with all the shop goodies you never thought you'd have. Even putting a piece of door trim or painting a few square feet will seem like something is getting done. If you let it sit too long that will become the normal and it'll never get finished :(

It looks like a really sweet setup. I noticed a few old and newer Pontiacs in some of the pictures. I've had a few over the years and would love to get into another 02' 40th Anniversary Grand Prix GTP 2dr again. Nothing crazy, just a few bolt on's with a mild tune to use as a beater :lol_hitti

The FreeNAS box is FINALLY up and running !! The HBA cards kept getting oddly hot during SMART burn in's so I put a 120mm fan over them. Problem solved
46905731995_c6426babc8_z.jpg

It sure is a sweet system with an amazing amount of features. The Netdata app has to be one of the neatest monitoring softwares I've used in a while. Anything and everything and more than you'd ever want to know is available. Transferring all my data from my Drobo5n to a Raid2z pool with 6x4Tb WD Red's is giving it a workout, sortof.
47032461774_bea7fc3e1e_b.jpg

Once the transfer was running I went to Dad's place to help put the duals on the new combine.

20 bolt hubs :shocking:
47769860382_8737593c3e_z.jpg

The specs call for the bolts to be tightened to 450ft/lbs but we don't own a torque wrench to do that high of a torque setting. The math says that L (length) x F (force) = T (torque) so logically if I put half my weight on that 4' pipe that should be about right :dunno:
47032461874_523804875d_z.jpg

Good chance the top 6" of the hopper topper will need to come off. It was within 3" of hitting the header in the big door in Dad's shed.
47769860512_0e9c692803_z.jpg

Oh yeah, that was close !!

Since we cannot afford all the heavy truck oil changing tools I'd like to have we improvise and use the bottom foot of a tote to drop oil into. When it get's too full it gets emptied into a storage tub.
46905732055_f7972c5580_z.jpg

When we're not emptying this tub into the other tub we have a large funnel that can hold a few used filters. The filters have a chance to drain out and are fairly oil free before we bring them in to be recycled.

It is 60F out and there is still snow around. There a a TON yet on the North side of the **** shack by my place. The wind drifts it in there and the sun doesn't hit it so I'd imagine it'll still be there tomorrow evening as well.

We live by a relatively busy road and the kiddos like to play outside when they all get home from daycare/school so it's time to build them a giant playpen. First step is to make the posts. At almost 80lbs an old worn out Wishek disk blade will do nicely as the base.
32878262117_169f3f9b33_z.jpg

I was able to finish 4 posts and hang 3 sections tonight before it got too dark. I think it'll work swell. I don't know where my gas lines come into the house and go out to the shop so disk blades seemed like a good idea. No posts in the ground and I can move them around if needed.

There is suppose to be 5% of the corn is the "refuge" corn. The purple kernels are refuge kernels. There has been A TON of news coverage lately sparked by the Roundup Trials and it has lead to a lot of other things getting questioned lately that we do and use to roll our operations forward. The refuge in a bag concept is an incredible idea to help ward off insect resistance so our practices remain effective. As with everything in every area of life too much is always a bad thing. We rotate the traits we use on each field each year as well as the chemicals we use each year on each field. The amount of education we go though to be able to apply our own chemicals is ridiculous. The ones that are hazardous to human health are made VERY clearly known that they are bad for you and you should suit up if needed. We use nothing that requires anything more than a pair of gloves and a face shield. If you'd like more details on any of this stuff PLEASE ask and I'll share whatever you'd like to know. Information is power and false information is destructive.
47803264511_2b1e7abbb9_z.jpg

I do think there is something with exposure going on. The biggest assumption being made is the testing/certification on the chemical's safety is valid and being applied fairly. Time and time again in history we have chemical companies doing anything possible to get their products into the market even if they know it's bad for the people handling it.

example:

generic study from a while ago says 2.5 as likely to develop symptoms if i'm reading it right - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1257680/

Greetings, you might want to take a look at Torque Multipliers, I know you like Snap On but this link is just an example. We used them for torqueing 750 lbs nuts for 747 landing gear, it takes all of that ticking time bomb away when you using cheater bars and such

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00825PWSA/?tag=atomicindus08-20
I do like Snap-on (Who doesn't?) but my check book hates it. It is probably not a bad idea to invest in something like that. Figuring out the math has worked pretty good so far but being more accurate is always good.

What you got for an internet connection at home?

Have you thought about backing up the freenas to backblaze? https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-to-setup-freenas-cloud-storage/

edit:

I guess you could put the drobo in the chicken shed and beam the backups there. only a tornado would remove both buildings....
20/13mbps isn't the fastest offered out here but it works. We have fiber to the home so we can get up to 1/1gbps if you want to pay for it. I can stream out 3 Plex streams at once with decent quality at the receiving end so it's all good for now.

I have been looking into Backblaze but at this point I think I'll be putting the Drobo in the chicken barn or maybe even by Mom and Dad's place.

I agree with the assumptions being made about the safety of certain things we use everyday. For instance the cell phones we all rely on everyday may or may not cause cancer. Cell Phone Cancer Info There is no possible way the cell phone companies have had no influence on such findings. Dig into who owns who and you'll find that the same companies have ownership of Verizon/AT&T/Sprint and T-Mobile. No way they'd let us think their cash cows cause cancer.

It's the same in every industry. There is something that is dangerous to our health but makes them piles of money so that makes it worthwhile for them to convince us it's "safe enough". As the users of a number of "controversial" technologies I will say that I make my decisions based on the best information available to me. I don't think a bunch of non-sciencey jurors should decide if they think RoundUp causes cancer. The jurors are suppose to be non-biased on the topic of the trial they are part of but I challenge you to find someone with a true non-bias on anything to do with GMO's ... especially in California.

I am not trying to say that I think RoundUp or any of the other things we've been told are "safe" are truly 100% safe. I don't really know and I don't think any of us possess the channels/money to really know those answers. It is because of this we need to make the best decisions based on the information we have available to us. The information I have seen/read/whatever tells me that the proper use of RoundUp/GMO's/seed treatments is a good thing for my industry. Putting all gains in profitability from using GMO crops aside, if I or my wife thought these technologies were dangerous we would not feed our children the beef we raised. We would also not have cell phones, radios, or cars as they are also potentially dangerous to our health.

Believing what you want is what makes American great. Acting out to try to prove your beliefs are better or more correct than mine is where I draw the line. Civil discussion is one thing, protests and the destruction of property are NEVER necessary. Ever.

We own a rock roller and the neighbors rent it from us in the spring. It's a nice thing to bring in a little extra income and it saves them from having to buy one. This neighbor has a particularly sharp Deere 4640 with a shiny chrome exhaust stack on it. I wouldn't mind putting it in my shed :bounce:
32887968867_f4514ce996_z.jpg

We purchase chicken manure from someone near our other farmland and use his spreader to spread it. It is a spreader specially designed for spreading litter so it works very well.

The windows on the 4wd are getting mighty dirty. Time to give it all a bath !!
40865309583_4334088e13_z.jpg

I've been keeping a close eye on one of the front tires on the 886 and the cords have started showing. It's only a matter of time now. How long to run it before it goes flat ?? I need to figure that out and change it right before. Gotta get as much life out of it as I can !!

I think I could get another 5gal pail of corn in the mixer but not much more !!

Wow, you've been busy - what a week! From FreeNAS burn-ins to dual wheels and oil changes, then onto Wishek disk fence posts, field work and civil liberty discussions - when do you sleep?

I really like that custom fence, by the way. That was a great idea for making it moveable, and using up materials on hand at the same time.

JBL: I bet the annual costs of tire replacement and machines parts and repairs are up there taking a chunk out of your profits so no wonder you try to make the tires last as long as possible.

I think I have an old 1950's Proto torque wrench that is rated for 3500 pounds, but not sure how accurate. I keep kicking it cause I don't have a good place to hang it (and I don't own big trucks or machines now) so it might need to find a new home.

i like your thinking on figuring out how to torque your wheel bolts.

Annnnnd I was able to log over 20hrs for the in-town job doing odds and ends on a few projects in my spare time.

The fence and use of the disk blades has been planned for a little while now (2ish years ain't bad) and it finally happened. I get a little wild with the skiddy and snow plow over winter so I thought it'd be wise if I could dismantle the whole thing easily and move in in a few feet over winter.

Depending on the brand of tire we put on the STX325 it'll be between $15-$20k in tires. Cheap off brand tires are around $1,800 each and nice Michelins are in the $2,500-$3,000 range .... each ....

We budget a certain dollar amount each year for tires and repairs. It's a cost of doing business just like putting gas in your car to get to work.

Using a long bar and a calculator is an easy way to get close but I'd be all over getting closer with the proper tools .....

Just gotta treat it like its liquid cancer and you'll be alright. Its the cost of progress as a society in the end. Some have to suffer in the name of progress for the whole.

Products, education, training, and licensing has come along way in the last 50+ years. As a snot nosed kid, I read the instruction label on how to mix and apply the product. Warning label? what warning label. Of course in the process of mixing and filling one's hands, hands not gloves, got wet. Of course no one carried towels, so you used what was readily available, jeans pant legs.

One night, while eating at the family dinner table, my Mom started telling my Dad he was going to have to do something about his hunting dog because he was peeing on her flowers. Peeing on them so much that her flowers were deader than dead. Dead !! And as Dad and his dog is catching it ... I suddenly have this vision of wiping my hands on my jeans and Mom using the washing machine water to water her deader than dead flowers. Talk about a moral dilemma

I worked for a farmer for a few years that would use a bathroom scale and a long piece of pipe to torque lug bolts. He had the pipe marked at a certain length and would calculate how many pounds to pull after weighing himself. I remember when I was the one on the scale I had to pull 90 lbs. Always questioned how accurate it was but this guy was super particular about everything.

I always invisioned if I could have access to a supply of those used disc that it would be perfect for fence post base. Glad to see someone else thinks the same way. I generally use them to cook in, such as fajitas and fish fry!

But currently I don't know of any farmers in the area so I can't ask if they are willing to part with their used disc.

I enjoy reading the thread even though I don't post much so just know you got another lurker!

Yeah. All that's been showing up in my favorite, or used to be favorite, RSS News feed these days seems to be how RoundUp is going to give your great-grandchildren cancer and it's a bit frustrating.

I've heard many similar stories. You should file a suit against whomever made that chemical and maybe you can get those flowers replaced along with $2 billion in punitive damages ya know for the hassle.

That is a wonderful idea !!! I'm absolutely going to do that. Do the math to figure out the length of the pipe and how much I need to lean on it to get to what torque. I love it !!

If you were a tad closer I'd say come and get some !! In a few years we'll have a TON more as the big finishing disk will need new blades again .... then the front and rears will be worn on the Wishek so there will be a ton of them again ...

You cook in a disk blade ?? Boy oh boy if I can get one clean enough I think I'd give it a try !!!

Lurker's, posters and everyone else is appreciated. I honestly still find it entertaining that others think what we do out here is interesting enough to check in so often :bounce:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...-couple-in-roundup-cancer-trial-idUSKCN1SJ29F

I'm sure the judge is going to knock down the figures but that is a stunning result. imagine if every farmer could get paid out on this.
Boy o boy that creates a scenario in my head. If I get cancer and sue Bayer and win millions of dollars I could afford to farm WAY more acres and would have to get a much larger sprayer to cover all that added ground which would mean more RoundUp but I'd have won so ......

It seems Flickr has decided to make it interesting and rotate some of my pictures. Huh. I'll fix it later but in the mean time feel free to rotate your monitor as needed :lol_hitti

On Sunday we finished the "kid-tainment" area !!
47058140934_1525b338c9_o.jpg

While Mama Bear and I were working on the fence the little people crew was picking up sticks. Once I got the fire going they were content watching it for quite a while !!
47058146054_b33b1f4066_o.jpg

We decided to have supper outside so I made some hotdogs while the sat patiently. It was nuts how calm they were. Almost like something was wrong :wtf:
47058134374_a29ee0599f_o.jpg

Yup. The calm didn't last long. This was right after Mama Bear had to take Leo off the top of the table :lol_hitti
47058132374_54303558dc_o.jpg

After supper Alyssa wanted to help Mom cleanup so I took Leo and Lily out to do chores. We stopped in the wheat field and they marveled at the wheat coming out of the ground !!
46931446515_29c046e5db_o.jpg

Look how excited they are for the wheat to grow :lol_hitti

Yesterday we decided to tile out a few wet spots. Dad already has the mini-ex in the field. This was a rather full truck/trailer :bounce:
47795567972_700423fe66_o.jpg

Dad had a bunch already dug when I got up there with the skiddy.
47058125054_c08d950630_o.jpg

This is one of three holes we'll be able to dry out with just one 450' run of tile. I almost got stuck with the 4wd and disk here on Saturday !!
47795565602_7426c5a1aa_o.jpg

Water is already seeping into the trench !!
47795561592_894d000cf1_o.jpg

Gotta get the tile in and covered up before the side walls cave in. That makes for a mess !!
32903733837_95a33479d9_o.jpg

This is another of the three holes we will dry out. When they are wet for so long they tend to turn alkaline and the ground goes to garbage. All the water pools here and as it evaporates any minerals it picks up ultimately gets deposited in the spot the last water dries out.
40880929753_ceb41bd318_o.jpg

Sticky soupy mess !!!
47847795621_9ed808e8fe_o.jpg

Once we got the trench dug and the pipe laid we both started backfilling. Mom is holding the transit stick on the pipe so it doesn't move when the dirt goes back on it.
47058111234_20c7df1cf3_o.jpg

It may look like we're not doing anything but we're doing many things. Talking about weather to buy an 8r chopping corn head or a non-chopping head, what size bean head and if it should be a draper head or not, a realistic timeline on building the farm shop, how hungry we are because it's almost lunch time, marveling at how well drain tile works, oh and we're filling a trench as well !!
47058405534_3b647052f4_o.jpg

The end of the run gets a cap duct taped on and it all gets filled in.
47848096901_fc305cddbc_o.jpg

Mom picked me up this morning at home and I needed to get the F250 back to Dad's place and I didn't really want to walk the 2.5 miles back home in my work boots so I loaded the Ranger up and hauled it to Dad's place. I sent this picture to my BIL who is a HUGE Ford guy and said "Oh look. A Ford on a trailer. Go figure." :lol_hitti

Not my picture but this is how it's used in Texas/Mexico/New Mexico a lot of time. We just weld the hole in the center close, burn it in a hot fire to clean it. Season it with Bacon grease and then after another cleaning we start using it to cook all kinds of food!

Most of mine had 3 or 4 legs welded on the underside which allowed me to place it directly over a fire in the ground. Some folks has gotten pretty cerative but a simple disc with legs and horse shoes for handles gets the job done!

I bet if you make a few of them, you could have them sold at a market somewhere with demonstrations for the folks who don't know about it! Something to put out at the corner booth if your wife or mom does some selling of produce o the side?

JBL: just a normal few days on the farm for you and some of us it might take a month to do all that. new fence, drainage fix on a few acres, and quality time with the family too.

I compare raising kids to riding a roller coaster sort of it's a ride and just hold on and enjoy it no matter what's coming up. I always tried to pay attention to who my kids spent a lot of time with cause they are who they hang out with and if they are spending a lot of time with you and your bride that's great and hope they find great friends too.

keep up the great work and thanks for taking the extra time to take a few pics of all the good work you do!!

I will make one and see we use it and then maybe make a few more in my spare time and try to sell them. Seems like a really neat idea !!

The Googler confirms the ****-ton of money claim. Wow. I could buy new disk blades and make them out of those for that kind of money !! They wouldn't have that authentic drug through the dirt taste though :lol_hitti

Meh it looks like more work than it is. Try taking pictures of things throughout your day and you'll come up with a ton of stuff you did as well !!

The roller coaster analogy is a perfect one to use for the kiddos !!

Yeah Wheat!!!
They sure were excited.

They are happy because the fence didn't hold them in......
And this is probably why :lol_hitti

Two loads of fill and two loads of Class 5 arrived this morning. The construction guys are going to get things set up to pour the barn floor tomorrow.
40885903063_b4c27eb90a_z.jpg

After talking with the construction leader guy Jay I headed off to take a very blurry picture of a pile of chicken poop at someone else's barn. We've been buying chicken poop from this guy since the barn was built 27 years ago. It was the third single story barn in the area and is almost identical to mine. The manure was rather soggy and wet so we used the 7400 and loader to load it up. The poor skiddy would just spin and slide around in this mess.
32908528687_cd7b74d8fb_b.jpg

I only had to haul 4 loads and the rest of the pile was empty so I headed home and helped Dad clean out the corn planter. I got to use my Ryobi cordless vac and I must say I was impressed. It kept right up with Dad's big Rigid.
40885902943_0f01473c08_z.jpg

I could write a book about what Enogen corn is and why we're trying it but the short version is ..... Enogen corn helps provide more available energy to cattle. Read more here -> Enogen Link . Since the Enogen corn is meant for cattle feed only we have to clean out the planter before and after we plant it to make sure all the seed is going where we want.
40885902723_33fb31f9cf_z.jpg

Once Dad was rolling in the planter again I headed home to empty out the chicken poooooop in the Poo Palace.

"On The Road Again" ......

Two things in life are certain, taxes will never go away and John Deere's sure do like their fuel.
47063104054_18aed04330_z.jpg

Empty !!! Well, almost. Part of what is left will be used for the compost pile for the upcoming flocks.
40885902853_62b46f156d_z.jpg

This corn-stalk riddled pile of dirt showed up today. Where did that come from ??
40885902793_1e5d9196bd_z.jpg

Well this is exciting !!! Looks like the construction guys got part of my hayshed ready for a concrete pour !!!
40885903023_be57efd722_b.jpg

The steer barn floor is ready to go as well. They will be pouring a tad over 71yds and the equivalent of a 64'x72' area 5" thick tomorrow. The hayshed is a 48'x24' and a 24'x24' and the steer barn is 40'x72'. They will be busy tomorrow !!
32908528677_090f0d83ce_z.jpg

More on this later but I had them dig holes down around the feed alley posts to give them a little extra strength for the big steers that will be in these pens.

Wow, a busy thread lately.

I doubt Roundup gives you cancer. But, whatever. Everyone knows this country has set a dangerous precedent with lawsuits...

Where does the drain tile release the water to? Around my area the soil has a lot of clay and doesn't drain well, I know lots of the fields have some tile. But then there are some fields where there is no good way to drain water from the low spots, so they have a mini lake in them for most of the spring lol.

Too many people let emotions get in the way of science.

Never a dull day around your place. It is amazing what a little trench and some pipe can drain away.
It really is. I disked through 100% of that area today without a single issue. There was water there a few days ago !!

The tile releases the water to a small 3 acre "lake" downhill a few hundred feet. When you dig a few feet down most all our soils are heavy clay as well. Stick tacky stuff but the water will move though it and find the tile.

There are fields I've seen with a sump pump type setup in Western MN where the tile drains into a 4' diameter vertical pipe and a pump lifts it out and dumps it into a ditch somewhere close by. It seems like a lot of money and hassle but it is well worth it !!

Started the day off by cleaning some pooooo off the litter spreader. It builds up and gets caked on and is impossible to remove with the pressure washer so it gets scraped off. Gross.
47807207532_25988458d5_z.jpg

The windows on the tillage tractor have gotten rather dirty and quite challenging to see out of ....
47807207382_8a0d18055e_z.jpg

Wow. They are clear after all !! Yowser !!
40892937313_e095303db0_z.jpg

You'd think I could have seen that spot was wet with the clean windows and all but nope ....
32915268117_b814d6b062_z.jpg

It's been quite some time since I've been stuck with this tractor and it's in pretty good .....
32915268297_6d1a2c6b3e_z.jpg

If you walk by the hitch and aren't paying attention you'll bang your knee on it. It's buried below ground level as well as the hitch was scraping mud forward. The worst part here is there is a pin on the bottom of the hitch pin to prevent it from jumping out. I need to dig in the mud to remove it as I'll be unhooking the disk so I can drive the tractor out.
47807207422_48db3fccaf_z.jpg

The disk has a tendency to sink like a rock in even slightly soft ground so it drags the tractor down with it. I unhooked it and literally drove the tractor right out. We keep a heavy 1/2" log chain in the tractor for this reason. I hook it to the disk and drag it out sideways. A neighbor who was planting corn came over to see what was going on. He helped hook/unhook/rehook the chain a few times while I worked the disk out of the ground and his help was very appreciated !!
47807207612_5ca4429af0_z.jpg

Once it got far enough out I folded the wings up so there were 4 less tires dragging in the mud.
40892937353_c1c7ec3539_z.jpg

Out it comes !! To rehook it to the tractor I just hook the hydraulic lines back up, set the disk on the ground and use the fore/aft adjustment to lift the hitch off the ground and hack right into it. It's a slick deal really.
47807207712_4bcab53903_z.jpg

Back at it again !!
47807207762_bdc048ca29_z.jpg

I finished disking for the day and went to Dad's farm to get the fertilizer wagon to spread fertilizer on the wheat ground.

35 acres done so far.

I had a little extra so I put some on the high ground in my meadow to give it a little extra pep this summer.
47807207842_227a4472a9_z.jpg

I went home and they got the floor poured in the steer barn !!
47807208072_1757ae9906_z.jpg

They also got the floor poured in the hayshed :bounce:

This is step #1 in us being able to build a new house. This area will be used to put all the "keepables" in the old sheds we're going to remove so we can build a house in their place. The plan is to put some pallet racking in here to best utilize the space.

Have I ever mentioned that I am not a fan of cats :mad:

Looks like a cement truck took a **** outside the hayshed :lol_hitti
