Thank you !! It always takes a lot longer to do stuff than you plan but this one turned out pretty sharp if I do say so myself :lol_hitti

It's primary purpose is to stop Mama Bear from asking me to build it. Happy to oblige. No idea whatsoever what will be going on it other than "lightweight knick knacky things" :dunno:

I know those projects well. 🍻. If nothing else hopefully it was an excuse to have a couple shop beers. That's how I look at it.

Mike, thanks for reminding me fewer digits isn't all bad. My left hand was a target for every single sharp instrument my right hand held. Getting closer to my 60th one-thumb-up anniversary.
If you used the left hand to push the board on a table saw, you wouldn't have to worry about going to the ER. Just a trip to the welder and some bondo would fix you right up!

I drove to Pops place and back so no shop beers there. I have a zero tolerance policy on the whole drinking and driving thing. We did have lunch and some laughs so it was a good time. I like working and learning from Pops. It doesn’t always come easy as I can be a bit impulsive and impatient and just want to get to it.

Don't ask, just build.
Smart words. I put the first coat of varnish on today. It’s been a while coming. Apparently she’s had a place for a shelf in the new house since before the house was built. Ya okay lol. I’ve had a place in the shop for a Bridgeport since before we owned the property the shop is on so take that !! She asked what a Bridgeport was and I said “something that’s coming AFTER your shelf”. Mmmmmmhmmmmmmm.

Oh I agree with you on the reasoning, just saying that I think the cost will be a lot higher. Parts and labour are high and not getting cheaper.

The labor is cheaper down South because we don't have to pay for the "u"!

Twenty years ago when I was a John Deere mechanic, a family feedlot had a couple 4450 MFWD 15 speed loader tractors that they used every day to feed cattle. They were beat, and had a bunch of hours on them. They ran one through the shop, and the bill was almost $40,000. They took it home, and brought in the other one . . . . . .

I asked one of their kids the other day if they still had them. He said they do, and have been through the shop almost that much again.

A buddy asked if I wanted to come slay some trees on a fenceline on a property line. Well yes, yes I do.
IMG_3246.jpeg

A lot of them were leaning quite badly so I did the face cut, bored in and worked back until it cut through. That keeps the tree from tipping too soon and barber chairing.
IMG_3247.jpeg

We got a ways to the South cleaned up nicely.
IMG_3249.jpeg

As well as to the East a ways. Sam is in the skiddy cleaning stuff up. He has a bucket and some pallet forks and did very very well cleaning and moving stuff around. I told him he needed a grapple and he said “they’re spendy but maybe one day”. So now I’m on the hunt for a grapple for him.
IMG_3248.jpeg

I used my little MS200 for as much as I could. I really like running that saw. Lightweight and it packs a heck of a punch.
IMG_3250.jpeg

Mud season is upon us 🙁
IMG_3257.jpeg

The machine wheels get all full of mud and it dries overnight and makes a dang mess.
IMG_3256.jpeg

Really doesn’t look that bad …….
IMG_3272.jpeg

That pile of mud is 4” thick. Good grief 😂
IMG_3275.jpeg

30 calves at 498lbs average. Anyone want to venture a guess what this pen full of steak bites set me back :eyecrazy:

Oh boy I’d love to be buying cattle for $1/lb again !! It’s been probably 10yrs since they’ve been that cheap.

I have a nice selection of meats in the freezers here. Stop out and I’ll feed you some !!
I didn't read any further than the original question - so your response to @Boostingaz was unread. I'm off by a country mile! City boy here.

Thank you for the invitation. If I'm ever in the area I'll stop by and take you up on the offer. I'm 1,300 miles east of you but never say never.

Cheers

Never say never indeed !! Thanks for stopping by the thread. We can be GJ neighbors lol

Close but still low …..

I almost said 45-48k. But thought you might be getting a better deal haha.
$3.40/lb for those little bastards and they were not the most expensive animals sold per pound or per head. T’was $50,864 total after trucking.

There is still around $200 margin on each animal if none of them die and all prices stay the same ….. which is unlikely. Historically $200/head would be insane. Things are getting spooky in the cattle world. There is no good reason for feeders or fats to be so expensive and it’s going to drop like a pile of rocks one day.

Different market and different circumstances but.....

We paid 3k for our Jersey A2 "springer." We just last night hit the gallon mark. Getting a gallon per milk session. I'm sure we could squeeze a little more out persay but the calf isn't 100% weaned so taking it slow. Since it's a boy he will grow up to be hamburgers one day haha.

So we got a BOGO deal ? 🤔

Yikes! Our markets around here are similar...I knew your number would be over $3 for sure. We have bred heifers floating between $3200-3800, pairs are bringing $4500+...it's just madness.

So if you follow trends in the cattle markets, every 10 years on the "6" there is a crash in prices; 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, 2016.....2020 well that doesn't match does it? If the trend wouldn't have been wiped out by the 2020 crash, then we should expect a drop in cattle prices in 2026...but did 2020 reset everything? There has been A LOT of up in the market since then.

If I was running the same amount of cattle my dad and I did in the 90s, they'd all be going to the sale barn!
The thought has crossed my mind 😂

Looking to the futures I can lock in $1.92/lb in Feb for the animals I just purchased which would be around $500/hd profit. We don’t usually have enough animals ready to send a full load but I have 60 in the barn about the same size now so I know what I’ll be doing this afternoon.

Crazy meat prices for sure...I have been going the alternative route and wonder if you worry that the beef market is pricing itself out of the meat market. I got a dozen venison fillets, 50lbs of venison ground, 20 lbs of roasts, 10lbs of breakfast sausage, and 10 pounds of smoked snack sticks from a friends processed deer through Headons for under $400 ...a lot leaner than beef and I feel I got a sweet deal. Just me and the wife so were set for the year.

Yeah but then I’d have to eat venison. Idk lol.

Grandpa always used to say “to make venison taste good you have to waste the better part of a good hog so throw the deer on the rock pile and eat the hog” :lol_hitti

Seriously though all that for $400 is a pretty decent deal. When we sell quarters/halves/wholes off the farm I tell people they’ll pay about retail for the hamburger or slightly more but they get everything else for that price as well. All the roasts and steaks will be much cheaper than retail and quite a bit better.

Have you ever thought about just building a few pens, and feeding calves on dirt? Does it pay to have them in a shed? It seems like you have plenty of room to add a few pens.

Martin
It isn’t room that’s the holdup for raising calves. I love calves but buying them at $700+ each isn’t something I want to do. The kiddos want to get a couple bottle calves soon so we’ll have a few here to mess with soon enough. We’ll likely end up with 8-10 because if I’m going to feed one I may as well feed 10.

I LOVE the idea of buying beef straight from the farmer and avoid the middleman. Having a savvy butcher, you can trust is key too...sounds like you got a guy and sell to families locally...the smart play for a extended family or friends, in my opinion.

If you were closer I’d say swing on in !!

I’ve been using the same little butcher shop for as long as I’ve been doing cattle things. The place looks like it’s straight outta the 50’s and smells like a butcher shop should. The guys there are great and do a great job.

When we sell an animal locally I haul it in and the buyers call in and pick whatever they want. Tons easier that way. They pay the bill to the butcher so they can make whatever meat snacks they want.

Look at all that homesawn lumber !!
IMG_3259.jpeg

Pops and I made some of it smaller and stick it in the cattle chute as the floor was all rotten and not suitable to be kind to anyone’s hooves anymore.
IMG_3260.jpeg

Mama Bear bribed me into going to a MN Wild hockey match. It was as fun as it could be for both of us. I hollered movie quotes the entire time and made friends with the people sitting near us.
IMG_3266.jpeg

Man I hate mud season :Freak:
IMG_3272.jpeg

Quick little sweep and it’s nearly gathered onto a dried mud pile. Until next time I come in with something dirty :headshake
IMG_3275.jpeg

And now y’all know how I wash chainsaw chains. Some cleaner stuff and a little dish soap and a little elbow grease and they get good and clean before sharpening. This keeps my CBN wheels nice and clean.
IMG_3286.jpeg

Sharpen and soak in oil for a few days and hang up to drip off.

You guys planting?

We put two quarters of treated bean seed in the last two days. We have talked about it for years, but this is the first time we have planted beans before corn.

Martin
Not yet but we’re getting things ready to go !!

Pops hauled manure while Big John and I worked it in earlier this week.
IMG_3400.jpeg

Man this autosteer stuff is fantastic!!
IMG_3390.jpeg

Chicken is my favorite flavor of ****. Definitely.
IMG_3406.jpeg

After most of the various poo’s were hauled I warshed the skiddy as it had a bit of a funk to it. Not sure if this foam stuff if worth the squeeze. I had hopes that the poop would just fall off once rinsed but no such luck. It still took some major pressure washering to move it to the ground.
IMG_3447.jpeg

Load it up along with the big bucket just in case.
IMG_3448.jpeg

Two beautiful ladies in that tractor today !!
IMG_3449.jpeg

I noticed the bucket was not quite right and saw the dust cap had popped off. There appears to be some carnage 😬
IMG_3450.jpeg

Time to investigate. Brought it into the shop and tore into it. Seems I bothered a few things up that’ll need replacing Monday.
IMG_3453.jpeg

Oops. I guess I found the limits of the Gen1 Robo rock picker bucket.

Just yesterday at Easter brunch we were sitting outside with some cold ones and the lawn got brought up in conversation and my cousin said he mixed goat **** in the topsoil for seeding some patches. My other cousin said well goat shits no ************ lol.

Everyone is still working on Anhydrous and tiling here. According to the computer one said they just got 26 tile miles in the ground.

26 miles of tile is around 100-130 acres pattern tiled depending on spacing. 26 miles sounds like a lot but 130 acres doesn’t lol. It was likely close to a $175k job depending on what they charged. I’d have charged between $1-1.25/ft for the 4” stuff plus mains. If the going is good I bet an installer with a decent setup could have that done in a couple days. We can do 20,000ft in a day if things go well and we’re just schmuck farmers playing around 😂

Bacon and potatoes
IMG_3381.jpeg

We had brinner on the patio set over the weekend for the first time this year. It was nice not having to run all over the yard and gather the patio set because it had blown all over the yard over winter. It was right where we put it last fall. I’m so glad we went spent the extra money for the weighted chairs and table
IMG_3383.jpeg

A few months back (maybe longer) I spent way too much time unwobbling the wobbles out holes where the caster wheels mount on my office chair and now it’s let me down for the last time. It cracked and I went over backwards and I had enough.
IMG_3424.jpeg

I headed to the pile of metal treasures in the yard and found the beginnings of a new chair base. Some dummy drilled the new caster holes in the top of the base and had to redo them. Oh well. At least no one saw me mess up.
IMG_3425.jpeg

Robbed the only piece I needed from the old base and pitched the rest in the scrap bin.
IMG_3426.jpeg

As gooder than new !! I sat down and rocketed back on the new wheels that are apparently way more rolly than the last ones :lol_hitti

I was originally thinking that going to all that work for an office chair that isn't likely to hold together seems silly, but then I seen the rest of the chair and it made so much more sense lol. That looks like a very comfy chair!
😂 It is comfy !! It’s out of a Geo Metro that met its demise around a corner doing barrel rolls. I had the passenger seat as well but I built another chair out of it probably 20yrs ago now any gave it away.

It is one of the many things around here that my children are going to look at one day and go “what the hell dad?”
