For a removable drivers seat, seek out a conversion van. They often times have removable captains chairs in the center section of the van. NOt the drivers seat. These passenger chairs are attached to a heavy metal plate which is attached to the floor. A simple lever removes the seat assembly from the metal floor plate.

What’s going in the new shed? Equipment storage?

It is a manure stacking slab. The bedpack manure from the steers and the litter from the chickens will get stored in it until it is time to spread it onto the fields. It is a project I've been wanting to do for a while but couldnt' afford. I applied and qualified for some grant money from the NRCS, FSA and a few other farming/environmental govt agencies to help pay for part of it so up it goes !!

Since there will be manure stored in this structure and no one wants it to leak out there needs to be a rubber connector deal that goes through any seams to prevent leakage. This is one of them where the walls will meet the floor.

As a teenager, decades ago watched a crew pouring a slab with a black rubber gasket where the walls would go. It wasn't until years later I learned that they were building a holding tank for the pool it was next to.

Find it amazing with the deep frost ya get up there that slabs are being poured on grade.
Of course pouring frost walls on a building of that size would add considerable expense to an already expensive building.

Part of qualifying for the grant was to have the building engineered so I'm sure it'll be fine with no frost footings. Frost footings up here need to be 5' or so deep. Pouring slab on grade lets us use a wet set bracket for the poles for the roof so there will never be wood/ground contact for the roof structure. This is the first one like this the NRCS has approved and I'm sure glad they did.

Didn't bother with running mixers from the batch plant, just 14 yard dump trucks. They kept about 40 trucks going in a circuit to feed the spreader machines. They started pouring about 6:30 in the morning and were done and cleaned up by 4 pm. Saw that they had dropped another 8 or 10 truck loads of rebar for the next lane on my way home from work this morning...

Interesting, I haven't heard of them using dump trucks before. Sounds like it sure speeds up the process.

Helps in that the company set up one of their portable batch plants about a mile up the road from the south end of the project. 6 miles of two lane asphalt being upgraded to 4 lane divided concrete. Dirt and utility work started last September with scheduled completetion of the entire project prior to the end of 2019.

Earlier last week when I made a 3hr trip away for work they were redoing a section of I94 in Western MN and they had dump trucks hauling concrete from the batch plant. First time I'd ever seen that as well. I'm sure it's MUCH faster than loading and unloading regular concrete trucks. PLUS they must be way easier to clean/wash at the end of the day.

I never thought of stuff leaking out. There must be some sort of seal on the end gate or it'd drip all the way from batch site.

So there I am minding my own business doing my thing at work in the lift and I go to start it to move to the next spot and the lift won't start. WTF is going on ?! Luckily a coworker was not far away so I hollered to him to see what was going on. Well it turns out the nosy cattle pushed in the E-Stop down on the lift !! I put a hose clamp around it so that won't happen anymore. Good grief, always something !!

It was a hot SOB yesterday !!! I walked the chicken barn 5 times in the afternoon to keep them up and moving around. With it in the high 90's outside it stayed about 85-87 in the barn. When the cool cell is not running it is usually 4-5 warmer than the outside temp which means the cool cell lowered the inside temp 15+ in the barn !!!

With all the moisture from the cool cell coming into the barn the last few days the litter got quite soggy. I put down a few wood shavings to keep it from getting too slimy. If it gets too slimy the chickens slip around and might start having leg problems.

I mixed a load of feed last night and found out how much the mixer holds

I guess it only holds 7,315lbs of feed. I usually do 7,000lb batches but was distracted and it got a bit too full !!

When I got home I saw that the concrete guys were here for a while. They don't show up all week and when they finally do it's the hottest day of the year so far.

I did a little cleanup work in prep for the next thing to be removed. We're going to have a silo downing party sometime soon

That brings us through yesterday and up to about 9am today. I decided to spend some time in Fergus the bus.

I got a bunch of stuff done !! New front wall with trim ...

Built a cubby/storage deal for the Mrs ...

Look !!! It works !!!

Eeeek, there's a bit of cleanup to do before we can go camping !!

And little Mr. Fearless is starting to scale furniture ....

Yesterday morning I ran the generator test with all the fans and such running. The barn likes to drink it's power I guess !!

The week of July 4th the regular driver of this truck goes on vacation which means I get to drive it for him and make all the deliveries like I used to 4yrs ago. It's a rather treat this year though because it's a quite new Freightliner !!

Stacking slab floor is ready to be poured today. Last night we got some pretty crazy rain which is good for the crops but bad for the concrete guys. We'll see what happens today. I'm sure it'll be a mud pit ....

Well ..... we got 6/10" and it's a mud hole. The concrete guys suggested bringing in a bunch of crushed concrete to put down where the trucks would be so they wouldn't get stuck and make a mess. I said go for it but I wasn't paying for the crushed concrete and they needed to figure how to remove it from my field before they finished the project.

They said they'll come back Thursday

No kidding. It's raining again and will do so for a bit yet today. We're forecasted to get another 1.5" or rain tomorrow. Seems like we starve for weeks then it all comes at once the last few years. It'd be nice if we could get 1" nice and slow every Saturday night all summer long. That might be asking too much though

Off topic is just fine around here. I don't have much feedback on the katcher but I do know a few guys that use them. I can ask around. It looks like it'll work pretty good but I'm still a fan of the ol' tackle method when they're that small

There was a doosy of a storm forecast yesterday morning and it delivered. The clouds were pretty grumpy looking for awhile. The logical place to be was on top of one of the feed bins by the barn so I could see it all



Dad and I finished our very own chicken basket. Just in time too because a buddy is getting chickens on the small carts on Friday and he's gonna use it for the first time.


I did some more work to the silo blower that will be used to blow the dust off the ceiling.


I put part of the old intake chute back on with a piece of expanded metal as a protective guard.


Everything was going well until the grinder kicked back and bit me. Abrasive cutoff discs can be quite abrasive ....

Hate when that happens. I have several scars from wirewheels, grinding discs, and cutoff wheels from when I worked in the fab shop. You say youll never do it again, but a few weeks later it catches you by surprise anyways...

6:05am the first concrete truck showed up this morning.


I've seem a few pump trucks from a distance but never one up close. My goodness this in a truly impressive machine !!!


From this angle it looks like concrete is just falling through a pipe from the sky


The guy running the laser screed and the guy running the pumper truck were both incredibly good at what they do. I asked when it was all done and they work together quite often so they've gotten to know each others habits they said.


The pump pretty much never shut down. One truck would empty out and another would be in place ready to go !!



180yds of concrete in less than 3hrs. They moved right along !!

No need to be sorry. I am also a big kid at heart. I got to talk to the guy running the concrete pumper truck and I wanted SO BADLY to ask "if I could drive it". My 6yr old self would disown me for not asking but hey, sometimes you need to play adult for a bit.

Thanks for following along Bob. I follow along in your thread in astonishment at some of the things you do as well. I enjoy your humor and your take on life and we can all tell you enjoy whatever it is you are doing at the moment. I for one know that I need to focus on the positive in life more than I do. It seems like I get caught up in all the stuff that needs to be done and life passes me by. Your thread (and Andy's) brings me back to earth sometimes so thank you for that.
