There is a spot that is always a little soft and he just about got stuck !!! The picture doesn't do it justice but the ruts are well over a foot deep ...
Didn't you put some drain tile in that area last year? Or maybe I'm thinking of a different spot.
Your corn sure looks great!

This is in a area that is technically a wetland so tile is "unwelcomed" by the county. There are a few ancient drainage ditches crisscrossing the meadows but I need to get approval to clean them out. I don't think it's all that hard to get approval from what I've heard but I bet there is well over a 2,000' feet of ditch I'd need to clean out .....

The corn and beans are looking the best they ever have. If we get another 1" of rain soon (forecast 0.89" Saturday) we'll be setup for the best crop we've had to date.

It'd be nice if the corn was worth $8/bu instead of the beans though :lol_hitti

I met with the lumber supplier and the builder this morning before work for the stacking slab. When I got home I was impressed with the amount they got done. This was 3 guys and a scissor lift .... not bad ....
29964449048_93b72b5b38_b.jpg

Dad got some meadow hay baled this afternoon and we needed to pick it up ASAP as there was a line of storms coming this way ....
29964487738_dacc72b236_b.jpg

I closed the steer barn curtains in preparation. If they're open any rain that decides to blow in makes a mess of their feed ....
29964448988_c1f6c3e8c1_z.jpg

That puddle is a few hundred feet away from where the above picture is. We got almost an inch in less than an hour. Good thing we got the hay baled and picked up !!
29964488048_cea755a80a_z.jpg

The stacking slab has changed where the water runs so we will need to address this issue soon. The water was draining out just not fast enough.

I love your stuff. Until you report 0.89" of rain forecast.:lol_hitti
When it was all said and done we got a little over 3". Goes to show the weather people know just about nothing, as usual.

Not so fast...that has some serious pond hockey potential come winter!
Yep time to dig it deeper, kids will be needing a swimming hole soon.
Not to mention a place to fish for your you and your son.
Leo and I will be fishing the creek that runs through the meadow. All this water ends up there in a round-about way so it'll be like we're fishing this puddle after all :lol_hitti

Wow, great timing with your hay bales!
No kidding !! It started to drip as I was bringing the skid loader back to the hay shed by my place. Dad had 4 more bales by him that were close to home so he ran to get them with the skid loader 2 at a time. It was raining when he got them in the shed but it's not big deal, they'll dry out.

Miss Lily, our 5yr old, took 3rd place within the other 5yr olds in a pedal tractor pull today during our local town festival. She was quite excited because she did better than one of the boys in her preschool. "I'll have to let him know I beat him on Monday when I see him!!!" I told her to do exactly that :lol_hitti

Lily is so funny. Towards the end of her run she was chanting "Lets go Lily, Lets go Lily You can do it!!" It was a video moment that no one was fast enough to record !!

I'd get canned if I was inaccurate that many times ....

I appreciate the heads up on the when, even though that is also spotty. The how much really doesn't matter because it varys so widely. We got 3" here, 2 miles West they got 1" and 2 miles East they only got 1" as well. We were all forcast to get less than an inch. On average they were close though :lol_hitti

Great to see your oldest is racing well! That is a lot of rain. Wonder if you could dig out a shallow trench to help the water find a path to where it might be beneficial. I recently watched a bunch of videos on breaking up beaver dams (youtube rabbit hole) and among them was someone who was trying to reduce the swampiness of their property which looked a lot like farmland and his solution was shallow trenches.

I was sent to a customers farm yesterday to work on a fan that was "squeaking". Holy bad bearings Batman !!!
28998240907_a22557118a_z.jpg

Ended up the shaft was shot and both bearings and carriers were beyond shot.
The new ones look just a *little bit* better :lol_hitti
42126907180_f1c8d686c5_z.jpg

I came home yesterday and the roof steel was here. Progress is coming, I can smell it !!
28998240957_7d7317209c_b.jpg

Holy smokes !! Three guys and two man lifts put up the poles and prepped for rafters and six guys got the rafters and prepped for tin. They must work harder than I do because this is pretty good for a days work for six guys in my opinion
29000353207_6bfbeb1710_z.jpg

The steers can clearly see what's going on and they don't seem to care.
29000353337_d525180b7c_z.jpg

The front right steering cylinder on the 7400 has been leaking like sieve for way too long and it's time to fix it.
43219227204_4c7f8e53e3_z.jpg

All sorts of rubber and leather things in here holding the oil back !!! Put the new stuff in the way the old stuff came out and all will be fine ....

There is a shallow slope to the area the puddle is and it was raining that hard that fast that the ditch couldn't drain. I'm going to put some 6" or 8" tile through the bottom of the ditch this fall when I put a driveway up to the stacking slab and that'll hopefully help out enough to keep it dry all the time !!

Looks like some maintenance was missed. :headscrat

No kidding! I bet that made quite a racket.

I actually took this call while I was at the shop that day. He literally said it was squeaking a bit. He also told me to grease it up when I was done so the new stuff wouldn't squeak right away. I guess he knows what grease is, just not how to use it :lol_hitti

These guys had the entire South side done and half the North side done by 9:45am. They sure do move right along.
30087550378_365f76d77a_z.jpg

I decided it might look nice to put a 2' drop of side steel along the sides to cover up the rafter ends and all the rubbage that would stick out if the side steel wasn't there. I don't know .... it looks okay but a big part of me thinks it looks goofy. At least it's too late now so I'll just have to get used to it.

I believe it is being used for "poo":lol_hitti
It has been dubbed the "**** Shack" around here:lol_hitti

It'll be used as a manure storage area when we clean out the steer barn until we haul it onto the field to be used as fertilizer. It's sized to hold 9 months of manure from 175 steers.

If you're reading into that it means I need another 75 animals worth of barn space. There's a real good chance that's next. Mama Bear said I could only build one thing a year so that'll be next springs project :bounce:

Man, those guys really got that thing finished fast! So since you're just filling it with mountains of ****, I think that nice flat floor is perfect for a big smoky burnout...to christen it, so to speak. :D Unless you don't have anything that will do a burnout, then just scrub my great idea.

Fan shaft was just squeaking. A little grease would have cured that. You don't just go and buy all new stuff when it just needs some grease.

The Manure Mansion looks great! Or is it a Fertilizer Fortress? Regardless, the skirting looks great. Keep us updated on the Poo Palace. I bet you store some good **** in there.

Before the burnout it would be appropriate to have a nice big barbecue party. Then later you can tell people you used to eat in there.

When I called the farmer before I left I told him what I did to fix it and he had his doubts it was worn badly enough to warrant replacing everything. The shaft was still good but by the time I throw the labor at it to take the old junk off the new shaft is paid for two or three times over.

Manure Mansion, Fertilizer Fortress, Poo Palace .... I like it. I will have to decide on one and make some signs.

I really like the BBQ idea. "This thing used to be so clean we literally had BBQ's in here" We're planning on having a bonfire tomorrow night ... come on up !!!

I'm working on cleaning stuff at work so we can expand the back lot where we park our trailers and fleet rigs and these were in the way. I scored 36 275gal totes today. The plan is to remove the plastic innards and use the metal cages to haul/store firewood. We have maybe a dozen made up already and they work great. Mrs. Jblnut told me to stop dragging junk home .... I wonder how long until she notices they're here:lol_hitti
42160959460_0711fd7313_z.jpg

The builder dudes finished up the Fertilizer Fortress today with the last little bits and it was time to start cleaning up. The skiddy sure does look small in there !!
42160959390_93d3dfd491_z.jpg

It doesn't look like much but in between the grass lines there is a massive pile of black dirt that needs to get spread out now that the building is done.
42160959470_32cfa7e1c0_z.jpg

Load number 15 or something. I hauled dirt for 5ish hours today and got 8" or so over everything that was bare clay.
42160959420_87460694bb_z.jpg

Well I have way too much black dirt. It's a good problem but I won't have anywhere to go with it until fall when the corn is harvested. I plan to spread the rest out over the clay/sandy hills this fall.
43923647082_3203bbba50_z.jpg

It is barely visible in there but the Ranger is hiding in the Manure Mansion way in the end of the picture.
43923647042_646939370b_z.jpg

The South side of the Poo Palace turned out really nice. I was worried a bit that there would be too much slope but it'll work out great.

I keep thinking Manure McMansion.

You do good work, but the retouched photo of the engine compartment was just too clean. When you photoshop you need to add in a little realism.

"Quit dragging junk home", OK, when you quit shopping... It's what we do.

Although the items in the Jeep photo are what's there the picture was taken before we had kids and I had enough time to actually keep it that clean. Currently the powder coat is flaking on a few brackets and the shiny aluminum is more a dullish gray. It still scoots right along though :bounce:

I was about to ask where the new barn was going when I saw the 175. I also agree that all that fan needed was a couple shots of grease to get it through to winter. You guys must be rich up there in Minnesota!

I've been trying to find someone to build it but everyone is busy pretty much until freeze up this winter so I guess it'll have to wait until spring unless something falls through for someone.

Time to address the drainage problem. Making the ditch deeper should help. I took out 4 very full scrapers of dirt so hopefully it helps !!
43985058451_0f22fb638f_z.jpg

Once all the black dirt was spread I used the field cultivator to level it out and blend it all together. The 7630 doesn't have enough power or weight to pull it with the wings down so it stayed folded up.
30116539588_a87468777c_z.jpg

I think it turned out pretty good. If I ever build something here there will be a fair bit of black dirt to relocate but oh well. This will be home to my sweet corn patch in the future :bounce:
43936630972_a979c0245d_b.jpg

This is an 8' long 2,000lb Johnson concrete cattle waterer with a crack. It was cracked when it was delivered to the store back in the day and it was in the way for the back lot expansion so it had to go. It'll have a nice home here forever holding back dirt

Speaking of sweet corn .... Leo has a little ways to go before he's good at eating it on the cob but he'll get there :lol_hitti

Currently we pile the manure at the edges of the fields we will be spreading it in. There are run-off issues associated with doing this as there is no containment area like there is with the new stacking slab. Farmers hate run-off more than anyone else because not only is it damaging to the environment we rely on to make our living it is literally money running away. The run-off contains valuable nutrients that will need to be replaced with commercial fertilizer that costs $$$$$$$.

Last winter my banker called to see how "it was going" and I grumbled to him that the steers weren't all that profitable and that crop prices were lower than low. His answer was to expand. It sounds silly on the surface but it makes sense. More of everything to spread costs out over should help keep the cost per unit (acre, head of beef, etc) down.

I bet my wife would love it if a banker told us to expand our house, but I would need to secure more revenue to make up for it. Sounds so much better to do the expansion on the farm. Your farm is definitely attractive and your outlook makes it fun to follow.

Random question, how old would a laying chicken need to be before it lays an egg? Guessing you don't have them long enough.

Those pallet tank/cage combos are nice to keep the plastic in and cut the top off for storing steel scrap. The plastic keeps the small parts from escaping.

Im surprised by the poo palace design. Most around here have the steel tube frame and tarp roof over large concrete blocks. Gives more headroom for dump boxes and loaders.

My lovely wife has been talking about a new house since the day she saw this one. The best I can tell her is we need to build our revenue stream before we build something that won't add to it.

The laying hens are 28-60 weeks old. My chickens do not live to see their 7 week birthday :lol_hitti

Using a tote for small junk is a great idea !!

That design was an option but I was told the tarp needs to be replaced every 10-15yrs at my cost so I went this way instead. The EQUIP payment rates had numbers for that design as well as this one. Seemed to make more sense to build an actual building I guess. The sidewalls are 18' so we can dump in it with our wagon and will have no issues loading the spreader with the 7400 and loader or the skiddy.

I paid .75 cents USD for each one...so sweet, you could eat them uncooked!
Well it got me thinking of being out on Quaker road and here I am.
Now that you got the Manure Mansion up, the cow are sure going to complain when they go into the city.....
