Today, however, was not such a good day. Not once, but twice, I somehow managed to cram a cage nut under my right thumbnail. Good golly Aunt Molly that hurt !! I think it hurt twice as bad the second time. I trudged on though and put the remaining 30 or so in without issues. Oh yeah, they were two in a row. I swore a bit and told myself to be more careful and then I really swore a lot and was determined not to be bested by a damn piece of hardware !!!

I've been feeling pooply lately and finally went to the doctor. On my way to the clinic my lovely wife called and said our 3yr old had a fever and was complaining her throat hurt "crazy lots Mom" so I took her along with. Turns out we both have Strep Throat. Great. It's my turn to say home with a sick kid tomorrow so I'm sure the day will be filled with Disney movies and chicken nuggets

Ouch on the thumb, ouch on the throat, ouch on the tractor.

Family friend had a bale fall on a John Deere 60 just like your H. No damage except the stack and a slightly tweaked grille. Sad to see but easily fixed.

Tough old tractors. Just lucky it fell beside I guess, a direct hit may not have yielded the same results !!

Ya know, I really like that shot. You're a good dad!

Feel better soon.
We both feel better already. Alyssa woke up perky and chipper and I'm lagging behind a bit but getting there. First time I called in sick to work for my own aliment in a LONG time.

Alyssa was flat out pissed the Dr stuck that swab in the back of her mouth and wouldn't let go of me until we left. When the Dr left she looked at me with a scowl on her face and said "She's not a nice person, that was mean!". Kids tell it like it is :lol_hitti

Glad to see the H is alright!
The H is the first tractor grandpa purchased so it's got some history behind it so yeah, I'm glad to see it's okay as well. I expressed relief to Dad about it and he laughed. Apparently that tractor has been blown up, rolled over and flattened a few times before. Roughly 20 yrs between mishaps so it's about due again.

Don't often see an H with the down draft muffler.

Your baby on your lap was a great picture!

I have never spread manure. I trained my cows to do that.
I used it in the barn and was befuddled that it absolutely ran like **** and finally took the pipe off. Apparently it was a major restriction and it ran great after !!

Miss Alyssa is adorable even on her worst days. She's just a cute kid.

Once so far the steers tried spreading their own manure. Sure makes for a commotion when there are 40 1,400lb animals running around out of their pen !!

Well it snowed and the ground is frozen down about 6" so we're pretty much done with tillage and farm stuff for the year. We have about 100 acres of corn to do for a neighbor and a half acre or so of our own to do that is in a really wet spot.

I get to spend some time in my little shop now though !! The first winter we were here I "insulated" the garage door and feel like it could use some more. I attached a 1" piece to the 2" that is already there and it actually worked pretty swell. I'm going to have to pick up some more.
30890902747_6c27efbac9_z.jpg

I spent a few hours in the shop yesterday cleaning stuff up. I think I cut up 2-3 wheelbarrows of wood and at least a skid loader bucket of scrap iron will be coming out. This poor little building REALLY gets neglected over summer !! I cleaned out a corner full of junk and put the welder in it instead.
45781495362_3f0b8bb346_z.jpg

Swept the floor. I think I gained 1" of headroom everywhere judging by the size of this pile !!!

This morning I made two skillets of hash browns as the kiddos don't like the "Green stuff" in them. Picky picky.

Since Sakurama raised everyone's awareness on cast iron skillets, can you share the details of what appear to be 2 skillets from the same manufacturer?

We picked up a #5 Wagner Ware a week or 2 ago and she's loving it.

Cheers

Oh boy cast iron cookware !!! I have a few pieces ..... I grew up with Lodge Cast Iron cookware so it seemed natural to outfit our home with it as well. Cast iron was a new thing to my wife and she has not totally embraced the whole "wash with hot water only, NO SOAP" concept. I guess if it doesn't get soaped it's not clean. She prefers her copper coated fry pan and SS skillet. She'll come around in the next 50yrs or so I'd imagine, I can be persistent :) Not all the items listed below are in the house. All the Dutch Oven's are in the bus as well as the 15" skillet and a few other things.

I have:
2 - 8" skillets
2 - 10" skillets
1 - 10" Boy Scout Skillet (Got as a gift when I earned the Eagle Scout rank)
2 - 12" skillets
1 - 15" skillet
1 - 10" deep chicken fryer with lid
1 - 10" square deep griddle
1 - Large Grill/Griddle

No Amazon links for the below items, they're all decades old .....
1 - 12" square shallow griddle
1 - 12" square shallow skillet
1 - 14DCO Dutch Oven
1 - 16CO Dutch Oven
1 - Flat Bottomed 5qt
1 - Flat Bottomed 8qt

Here is a picture of the regularly used stuff that is kept below the oven.
30895777257_46e78bdd0d_z.jpg

The Grill/Griddle combo gets used a few times a week at home on the grill and we bring it and the grill along with when we go camping. Both 8" skillets live out on the grill and are used for onions/mushrooms/peppers or whatever else can go on top a juicy steak or pork chop. The Grill/Griddle has made steak, pork chops, chicken, salmon, ribs, even a pizza once in a while !!

Cast iron is the best. I made a hamburger casserole and later a brownie in the same skillet yesterday, lol.
We went camping years back and forgot everything but an 8" skillet and a dutch oven. By golly if we never even used the skillet and still ate like kings !!

There on the left...that's the biggest damn spatula I have ever seen! I bet it could double as a good weapon if need be. :bounce:
It's more of a scoop-tula :lol_hitti

It is amazing how your kids can make your pain go away so fast.
I was feeling pretty cruddy that day until I saw Miss Alyssa dragging her feet and not acting like herself. Didn't take a half second for me to forget everything I had going on when I picked her up and she told me she didn't feel good. She flashed me a big smile after a big Dad hug and we both felt a little better :)

Winter *****. I can't play with most of my toys outside in my big sandbox because everything is frozen and most of them don't have No.1 fuel anyway

The steers cheered me up a bit though. Seems something on the garage door looked tasty and they cleaned up every little bit they could reach. More than likely some frost this morning needed to be licked off and they were up to the challenge !!
30930700407_bfc846545f_z.jpg

Sometimes the simple things get overlooked. Like this handy dandy string cutting hatchet made from a chunk of pipe and an old sickle section. Grandpa made a few of these "back in the day" and they're been going strong for a long time. A good sharpening every few years and they're good to go again !!

I walked up to the front of this DeWalt heater today on a job-site and thought to myself, "Gee, I didn't know DeWalt made propane heaters." Well good grief if it isn't a 10,000w electric torpedo heater !!! With my electric rates that would cost me a $1.20/hr to run !!! 10kw/hr @ $0.12/kw all in ...

Nice,, $460 on amazon for the 10kw, or $928-$950 for the 20KW depending on single or 3 phase.

You can dry corn in no time, cheap to.
If my math is correct we'd need 90 of those 10kw heaters to get to where the grain dryer is :lol_hitti

80+ amps on the 20kw ...good grief !!!

Price isn't bad though. This one heated up an 1,800sq/ft space lined with plastic only in about an hour to a balmy 55F when it was only 5F outside. Pretty impressive.

Been a while since I updated so this stuff is from the last bunch of days all jumbled together. Even though the snow is here and the ground is frozen we still haven't slowed down much !!

On a warmer day we went outside and pulled all three little people in my new to me Otter Sled. They had a blast !!!
31003279217_06ab6eac84_o.jpg

The 7630 was trapped in the stacking slab when the cold hit. #2 fuel and no access to be able to plug in the block heater meant we had to wait for a warm day to move it !!
45940856851_e3ab4928ca_o.jpg

I brought the 7630 and spreader over and mixed a couple loads of feed for the hungry cattle.
44124523040_891a3ffcc2_o.jpg

Pellets go in first. All the minerals and vitamins that are not in corn/hay are in here to keep them happy, healthy and growing.
44125690600_9c47cc0f90_o.jpg

Corn next !!!!!
44124522980_c5160bb13b_o.jpg

The last corn combined goes into the hopper bin and doesn't get run through the dryer. It is usually fairly dry already, between 16-18% moisture, and will keep just fine through winter. I'll be mixing a few loads a week out so any corn that may heat up in the center of the bin will be removed before it causes issues.
44124522490_b0e8c36cb4_o.jpg

Can't get another handful in !!!
44124522900_bb8f8ec952_o.jpg

When it gets cold we do not roll the curtain up and put the feed in the side of the barn because the cold curtain may crack when it's cold. We back the mixer in and load out the back of the mixer. It can be a bit of a challenge to get it in with the auger sticking out the back as you can't see the auger when it's all the way back. Once you do it a few hundred times it seems easy though :lol_hitti
44124522420_6417020bf5_o.jpg

After feed was mixed I cleaned out 3 of the 4 pens. It was time !! Since I'm hauling the manure into the **** Shack and not going down the road where it could spill off I loaded the trailer up to the max !!!
44124522820_a1bd06191f_o.jpg

Halfway through cleaning out the barn my dirt guy started bringing more Class 5 Gravel to build a new driveway up to the steer barn.
44124522380_912fc31fee_o.jpg

More lumber showed up for the steer barn addition on Thursday. Really looks nice on that pile there. I think it'd look a lot nicer all nailed together in the shape of a barn though !!!!
45940856881_24dbe850c3_o.jpg

On Friday I got to spend "a few" dollars setting up a Knaack 4830 box to travel all over the country to be used as a toolbox with our tools in for more SmartBow installs.
44125690520_c5b50cb280_o.jpg

44124522230_3c8e4c37d8_o.jpg

I spent enough I got a free mug :bounce:
44125690620_4c47ef3d41_o.jpg

Since it'll be traveling I thought it'd be smart to put some foam on the sides and bottom to soften some of the road rash. Once I was done putting everything in it was full to the top of the foam. It's set up for two guys to be able to work out of it at once. Everything from 1/4" impacts and 1/2" hammer drills to hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches is in there. A full suite of networking tools and testers will be going in shortly as well. The Leica Builder 509 is by far the spendiest tool in the box at just under $8k for the tool and tripod :bounce:

Nice! I didn't know there was another building coming.

Where do you get those round concrete blocks? Do you have a part number or something?

72' addition to the steer barn making it 54'x168' total !!! It'll add space for another 60ish animals.

No idea on the concrete cookies. I said "Build me another barn" and they make it happen. I can find out though.

Jblnut, I knew you were growing your own people but now I learn you have your own dirt guy! I am impressed!

how much more tooling going into the knack? No packout kits for being mobile off the knack? big sale on packout-
https://www.toolbarn.com/milwaukee-48-22-8400.html/
There is a complete set of DeWalt pack boxes and cart in there with the hand tools and networking stuff. The other specialty tools are in their own cases. I went into this knowing 100% for sure that it'd be a learning experience that will need to be redone 5 times before it's right so I didn't go too nuts right away as we don't know what we'll need for sure or how we'll want it organized. We'll swear a bunch the first time we go through some of it I'm sure and probably end up changing it onsite a few times to get it right.

Dude...you are living the life!!!! Memories forever.
We're having fun out here

What better way to be able to go back and see where we were and what we've done than posting it up here !! I've went back a few times and read through my entire thread and saw things I forgot about. Long live GJ and thanks to Ryan for making this all possible !!!

How neat would it be for our kids to be able to go through our build/gallery threads sometime and see what we did "way back when" ??? It's a whole new level of record keeping and photo-booking. I guess it's the man version of scrap booking :lol_hitti

The time has come to finally start hanging cameras by the other dairy we installed a robotic rotary parlor at. The first one I got fired up was the one looking at the units attaching where the cows first come into the parlor.

Greetings!
Don't the round concrete blocks go into the bottom of the hole before the poles go in ?
Have a great holiday.

Yes, they do. I'm not building a pole barn, but I have a need for a few of these. I can't find them anywhere, and it probably because I don't know what they're called. Does anybody have an idea of their name? :headscrat

You are correct. They go under the poles in the bottom of the holes.

My lumber yard also operates a concrete plant and they make these by cutting whatever size Sauna tubes the correct height and pouring concrete into them. Cheap and easy.

im going to ask a dumb question. How do you keep them flat when your placing them down in the hole? As with my luck, they would flip over and end up on there side at the bottom of the hole!

Just made it through 96 pages over the last few days. I grew up in the country and spent a lot of my youth cutting, raking and bailing. Fantastic thread here with a look into parts of farming I'm not familiar with. Thanks for all of the great detail, pictures and comedy.

I work in tech as well, but have to say, your job looks far more fun. Years back I worked for a wireless internet provider and installed repeaters and subscriber gear on lots of silo's in the southern Michigan area. I had no idea that farm tech had gotten as advanced as it has.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Looking forward to more!
