JBL: I also own those exact shelving units and I think i put 4 on one wall of my garage next to my bride's car. funny I tell members and people all the time how to make 2 racks into 3 by configuring them like this (pic attached). i'm not positive that we can do the same thing with the racks we have that are 4 foot wide, but if we can i won't have to buy another 4 foot rack for my storage unit that i was about to buy.

I can't even imagine how you take care of all the critters and family you do. keep up the great work and always like checking in on you to see what you are up to even if I don't get to as often as i'd like.

cheers

Congratulations on the 2,000 post milestone!

Nice workstation for the lady.

Drives: Even though he's got 15,004 little identical chickens they are all individuals and all need care. It's easy to think of them as a commodity but he understands they are individuals and that helps their survival rate immensely. They each need to be petted every day...

Yup, same here.

I like the door closing cable. It reminds me of a shop I used to frequent, they resurfaced flywheels to look brand new again. On the front door, they had a similar cable & pulley setup...with a little flywheel on the end for the weight.
Actually there were two cables, the other one was tied to the wall. If a customer came to the door with their arms full, the guy behind the counter would yank down on the one tied to the wall & open the door for you. :D

When I looked in store at Wally World the 4' and 6' racks seemed to be designed similar. I'd think it would work just fine.

The critters are easy to take care of. Finding the proper balance of kiddos/wife/farm/critters/work is the tough part but it works out. That is probably the proper order to put that list in but sometimes the last one creeps in front of the rest and then things get all gummy and sticky for a while ....

Thanks for the congrats. I think a party is in order.

She used it a bit Sunday evening and it seems to work. She said the light may have been just the correct amount of overkill

As usually Andy you hit the nail right on the head. Even though there 45,000 chickens in the barn it's important to watch over all of them as individuals. It may sound like an impossible deal but it's not as hard as it sounds. Being that there are so many in the barn any bird that looks different stands out rather quickly. It's easy to watch for them and tend to them as needed. Sometimes a quick pat on the head is all they need to feel good again :lol_hitti

:dunno: seems to display fine on my iMac G3 as well as My old Windows 95 box. The Windows 3.1 box want's nothing to do with it. Not kidding

That level of customer service doesn't exist anymore. It's a shame really. We went to Pizza Ranch Sunday evening and I held the door open for the people that exited after us and one of the ladies said "Thank you but I am fully capable of getting the door myself" Really ?!?! Come on.

Thank you sir, I'm fully capable of being inconsiderate and rude as well. I chose not to be like that tonight.

JBL: with as big of spaces as you have in your shops you probably should have a few commercial racks for both inside and outside. for inside the house if don't have enough room for the teardrop pallet racks (commercial racking like Home Depot uses) i'd get Warner's 6 foot tall 6.5 foot wide and 2 foot deep shelving like the pictures I posted. 2 racks make that set up and they usually sell at Costco (do you have that store in your area) for about $150 per rack and 3 times a year they go on sale for $125 if you can time it right.

i put my 4 foot wide racks alongside my bride's car maybe 30 years ago and I'll probably just buy another 4 foot rack for $60 than mess any with her side of the garage.

keep the wife and family happy as you can while you still have a good job and a farm to run is a magic act and sounds like you've got everybody somewhat happy (even time to pet the chickens too) so keep up the great work.

Wow. :wtf: Too bad you didn't say "lady, next time wear your hat that says I am capable, then I'll know to slam the door in your face". :bounce: It's kinda sad that being polite to ladies is looked down upon more & more these days.

Agree. It doesn't cost you anything and people who have a difficult time accepting kind gestures must have been raised by a pack of wild animals. Domesticated animals are definitely more civilized. :lol_hitti

JB: keep opening doors for gals and even guys and I bet you'll get more nice comments and/or smiles than the SNIPPY ONES.

sure there are people out there with big chips on their shoulders, but there are a lot of us that are happy to be here so let's just let those others die in misery while we enjoy every minute.

cheers and keep petting those chickens!!

Honestly I didn't know if it was a Sir or Ma'am but I thought it would be rude to let the door slam shut on him/her. I guess I found out :lol_hitti

No Costco up here yet but I think one is going up somewhere closeish to us. We have a few sections of the commercial stuff at Dad's place that we store everything from tires to wheat seed on. That stuff wasn't very expensive and is worth every penny !!

Keeping the wife happy is the largest challenge as we all want to do our own thing at times and I struggle finding time for just "the two of us". We're planning on going to a Minnesota Wild hockey game mid-jan so that should be fun. For her at least. I couldn't give a goats rump about hockey but I do like spending time with her

"one of the ladies said "Thank you but I am fully capable of getting the door myself""

In my book that was no lady...
I agree. What happened to being nice because it's the right thing to do :dunno:

Wow! I didn't know that was one of my options...
My Grandmother always told us that when someone was mean or nasty to you don't do it back. "Kill them with kindness" instead. It does feel good to know you have risen above their bad attitude and haven't given them the satisfaction of being nasty back to them.

Wow. :wtf: Too bad you didn't say "lady, next time wear your hat that says I am capable, then I'll know to slam the door in your face". :bounce: It's kinda sad that being polite to ladies is looked down upon more & more these days.
Haha. My Dad had a hat that says "I'm retired and don't give a ****". I could make a few that say "I'm rude and don't give a ****" and hand them out to people like that :lol_hitti

why not just be nice regardless of their gender?
That's how we were raised. You never know when you'll meet that person again or who they are. It's always better to just be nice.

Agree. It doesn't cost you anything and people who have a difficult time accepting kind gestures must have been raised by a pack of wild animals. Domesticated animals are definitely more civilized. :lol_hitti
Being rude is something that I think gets passed down. I've been caught saying that I don't care if my kids end up ugly or stupid as long as they're polite and respectful. Polite and respectful will get you WAY farther in life than being smart and good looking.

That being said, I think our kids are pretty cute and crazy smart for their size but I do have a bit of a bias though :lol_hitti

I have been thanks WAY more times for holding the door for people than I have gotten scoffed at. I am one of those guys that also waves at everyone I meet on the road as well. When someone doesn't wave back you know they're not "from around here" :lol_hitti

Oh! I'm sorry, I thought I was holding the door open for a lady.

I'm usually too flummoxed to respond with a retort. I just grin at them and mutter "FU too" to myself.

A tip on how to acquire Lowes (and Home Depot?) pallet racking -

About 10 years ago Lowes built a new store a couple miles away from the existing store that was near me. When the new store was fully stocked and ready to open, they closed old store and removed the merchandise. When done, they sold the racking to an outfit that buys used racking for resale. The reseller advertised racking for sale in the local paper while they tore it down and trucked it 6 states away to their location. I don't remember the prices anymore, but it was cheap, and by that I mean cheap. I bought enough to line two 48' long walls 7' high in several different lengths and depths.

I don't know if this is something that's done everywhere, but it might be worth finding out when a big box store within *** miles from you (up to you how far) is relocating or closing. Stop by when the racking is being removed and see if you can strike a deal.

It seems that every time I think about it I seem to be muttering FU under my breath more all the time. I don't know if "people" are becoming more intolerable or if I am becoming more intolerant as I age ...

JBL, the Costco is going up across from taco hell... I mean bell. It's supposed to be done next summer I believe.
We are Sam's Club members and have been for a while. I've never been in a Costco but I'm sure we'll check it out when it opens.

Dad and I ran a train on the K-Mart in St Cloud when it closed. We took a few pickup loads out of there. Racking, shelving and a bunch of carts. All of it is in Dads shop now. Money well spent !!!

craigslist is always full of the commercial stuff for good prices.
We located the bulk of the stuff we purchased for Dad's shop off Craigslist before that K-Mart closed. Cheap and HEAVY DUTY stuff !!!

The bed pack was getting a bit deep in the steer barn plus it was REALLY nice outside today with temps in the low 30's so it was time to clean the barn out.
31486501647_0c1a570e8f_z.jpg

There are many types of bedding that can be used for cattle. The bulk of what I use is 4'x5' corn straw bales. There is a plastic net wrap that holds them together until they get used. Sometimes I cut it with a utility knife and sometimes I unroll it. We have the baler guy put 3-3.5 wraps on and they seem to hold together well.
32554255498_f2862a2794_z.jpg

Once the wrap is off the bales fall apart quite nicely. This stuff is really dry so it falls apart very well !!

Just when we started having fun a tire decided to go flat. WTF.

The skiddy makes a good jack to lift the trailer :lol_hitti

Always a good time to check things over when a tire is off. This hub looks to be in great shape !!
32554255548_848bf7b448_z.jpg

The trailer has 12.5lx15's on it but all we had on a rim was a 11lx15 so that's what it got. Seems to work fine and go around like it's suppose to
31486501547_c7017e2903_z.jpg

After lunch Dad ran the skiddy for a bit.

Time to push the poop up on the pile in the stacking slab. I guess you could say I was stacking it up

The walls are 4' tall and the pile is an easy 4' above that after I had my way with it with the tractor and loader. This is a total of three clean outs so far in here.

The good news is by summer things will warm up and the smell won't be so stifled.

Reminds me of a sign at Braum's Dairy in Tuttle, Oklahoma: Come out and smell our sweet dairy air.

That is awesome !!

I can only imagine what the pile is going to look like by summer. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family!
We clean the barn out roughly once a month and have only used two bays so far. The barn was designed with the barn expansion in mind. At the rate we're going now it'll take 2.5yrs to full it totally up. Once the barn expansion starts producing manure it'll fill up in a tad over a year which is what it was designed for. 13 months of storage. Realistically we will empty it every spring and fall so it should never get totally full.

Oh it has a distinct aroma already. The wind here is predominantly from the North out here so it blows the stink South into the woods.

I went to college at a fairly hoity toity private school that bussed kids from one campus to another. We rented land next to the university at the time and my dad and uncle were spreading liquid manure from our dairy herd one day in a field next to the bus route and a few people grumbled about the smell. I took a loud very audible breath and just about yelled out "that right there is the smell that feeds the world, we should all get out and thank that guy for his hard work". That sparked a few nasty comments which ended very quickly when I said that it was my dad in the tractor. :lol_hitti

JBL: there is actually an charity auction item at the local Zoo here where ZOO DO is one of the most popular and expensive items to buy. it's actually been talked about on the local news.

yep those sprinklers spraying manure over the farm sure do have their own aroma don't they?

your farm seems to have grown quite a bit since you've started this thread and are you still trying to lease or buy more land? how does your dad like his so called retirement? I bet it makes him smile every day you are out there working with him.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your growing family!!

At the hoity toity private school I attended for one summer it was obvious I was the only one whose poop smelled bad.
Freshman year my dorm room shared a wall with the bathroom on our floor. I assure you, no one's **** didn't stink. The RA on the floor was the older brother of a good high school friend so I thought we'd get an end room or something decent. Nope.

Great treatise on the hoity toity uptown school bus.

Most people think that a food shortage just could not happen. so keep squeezing the farmers.
If a food shortage happened I think we'd be just fine. I can grow what we need and will be able to provide enough for ourselves. Most country dwellers I'd imagine will be alright. I don't see a food shortage happening anytime soon but when it does (and it will sometime) most will not know what to do as they haven't had a farmer in their day to day world for decades or generations.

ZOO DO eh' ?? I used to have a Ski-Doo snowmobile, sounds similar other than the popular, expensive and on the news parts :lol_hitti

The spreading and application of manure is done in a number of different manners in different regions. We prefer to spread it and work it in ASAP so the nutrients didn't have a chance to run away or gas off. Lots of custom applicator outfits up here inject it directly into the soil. The manure is never visible during the application process and the odor is greatly reduced.

Pops isn't retired, although he might be but I'm not sure. I don't think farmers ever really retire. Oh I can assure I don't make him smile all the time :lol_hitti

Merry Christmas !!

This pile of wood has been sitting here for a decade and it's high time some of it gets used !!!
45527027615_1841fbcbcd_z.jpg

Lets set up the planer and smoooooooth some of those fine Red Oak boards out !!
32567421488_38355e22b3_z.jpg

Pops is giving that one the eyeball "Lets see, which side should we take off of this time?"
32567421368_aaf7e1d9cd_z.jpg

Home sawn oak. Yummy !!
45527027695_75a07d30a1_z.jpg

All boards are planed to a frogs whisker more than 3/4".
32567421438_14cc94fa52_z.jpg

Home built jig to put a straight edge on a crooked board. There is a thin piece of plywood attached under the board on the right. The two clamps hold the crooked board solid. The board on the right is straight and true and will run up against the fence on the table saw. Always put the bow out and measure at both ends to see where to set the saw. When it's ran through the saw takes the "hump" out of the middle of the board and that edge is now straight. Sounds complicated because I wrote a novel to describe it but it's works great and is one of many many jigs Dad has put together over the years.
45527027435_7b46245ecc_z.jpg

Here's another neat thing he put together. Often when running the table saw it is really nice to be able to stop the saw without reaching down to push the switch. This little box allows you to start the saw with the dowel on top and stop the saw by pushing your knee into the vertical board.
32567421328_7c1e6961ac_z.jpg

Looking from the bottom side up there are two simple lever mechanisms. One to push the top button, one to push the bottom button.
32567421428_26c2bb0119_z.jpg

Once the boards had a straight edge on them we ran them though and made 1-7/8" strips ..... lots of them !!!
45527027385_aa735077a8_z.jpg

There were two VERY full barrels of fluffy shavings from the planer that I put down in the chicken barn. Seemed like a shame to throw them away when we have a use for shavings now !!

When my youngest son worked at a barn, the expression was that you became a pilot (as in pile-it)
Of course he wasn't working on a commercial pil-it level! Still remember the smell . . . kinda like diesel, a little goes a l o n g way.

"Must have pilots license to enter"

jblnut nice work on the Red Oak:thumbup:
Thanks 1/2 Cup !! Woodworking is something my Dad and I very much enjoy doing. It's getting harder to find time with as busy as we've gotten though. My lovely wife was/is the push this time. The lumber is going to be used for another chunk of butcher block countertop in our camper.

We (100% just her) talked about getting a new camper a while back and she said she'd be okay with this one if a few things were changed. She gave me a list of this things she'd like changed and away we go. The new entry door was first and a new eating area is next

JBLnut, I'm confused. Your camper already has a high-end 11-foot butcherblock counter. Is the new one going to replace the tabletop? If your wife was a city girl you'd probably have to replace the butcher block with granite.

I really stopped by to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We will be replacing the old dinette with a easier to use, more open floating counter top style deal.

Back in the day we had a full blown granite counter top purchased for the first set of cabinets we made but ended selling it to someone who paid us WAY more than we paid for it. My wife works at Cold Spring Granite as a drafter/designer for everything from sidewalk pavers to GIANT statues. The coolest thing she's worked on was the new building at West Point. I tell people she draws rocks when they ask what she does :lol_hitti

We tore the old dinette out back in June and I've been putzing around here and there cleaning it up in prep for the new counter top.

This is part of one of the walls of the old dinette I rebuilt to become a new wall up front.

The counter top will come out about this far. The goal was to have 15ish inches of space from the edge to the wall for yourself to tuck under whilst eating.

Time to vaccinate some calves this morning !!!

We set up the fancy bean bale chute and got to work.

It was a whopping 9F this morning so to keep the vaccines from freezing I filled some bottles up with HOT water and put them in a cooler box.

There are two holes in the cover so the syringes can be pushed through and the vaccine can stay in the warmth inside the cooler. It works the other way in the summer as well. I put frozen cooler packs in the cooler to keep them from getting too warm.

JB: I LOVE THE OAK WOOD PILE you and dad have sitting there nicely stacked in a nice and maybe fairly warm spot. great job on the planing and making of boards and looking forward to how a handy farmer makes some homemade butcherblock.

that is some CAMPER!! is it an old bus and not sure if you posted full on pics of it, but that's the way i'd go camping if that was something I could get my bride to do.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

this spring I may be picking your brain a bit cause i've got this little no knot 2x6 and 1x6 cedar piles to plane for my new fence and deck. hopefully these boards are not bending, but I might need to make that jig your dad made to do a bit of trimming to make some straight edges. I also hope my planer survives.

cheers

The wood pile is in an outdoor wing attached to a shed by Dad's place and has been there for a LONG time so it is good and dry.

This bus has an interesting history with our family. My Uncle and cousin owned it since it came out of service and used it as a mobile hunting shack. When we got it is was in a state of disrepair and I basically paid scrap price for it. I put fresh gas in it, changed the oil and drove it 60 miles home. This is how it looked when I first saw it.

This is how the outside looks now. I brought a Bud Light can into the local NAPA and told them I wanted a gallon of that color in a DuPont paint. It turned out pretty good I'd say !!

Your "little" pile of cedar is a rather large pile !! I'd LOVE to have that stacked up in my back yard !!! When it comes time to plane it down and straighten it out don't hesitate to ask questions if needed. I can't guarentee I will have the answer but I might :lol_hitti

This morning I tried my hardest to wish each and every chicken a very Merry Christmas. I think I got to them all and if not oh well I guess. They were in a good mood today and didn't seem to have as foul an attitude as normal.

We fed the steers a little extra today. It's Christmas after all.

As an added treat we bedded them really well a little ahead of when we normally would have.

We went over to my parents place for lunch today and exchanged gifts. My little sister gifted me a 3D printed 1/64th scale combine she modeled after a John Deere S680. It turned out great !! Some assembly required. This is the neatest thing I've seen in a long time !!!
