The "new" mailbox is up and looking nice !!
49146204016_c369d3fbf8_z.jpg

A good song "Baby Likes to Rock It - The Tractors" came on the shop radio and I turned it up and it yelled "PROTECT" and shut off. That's no good !! :headscrat
49145709793_18b423acee_z.jpg

Seems like a mouse has messed up a few wires. It must have been shorting out and shut off to protect itself. :dunno:
49146204056_475b256a42_z.jpg

Easy fix and I even caught the last part of the song !!
49146204096_8115a27715_z.jpg

The littles wanted to play outside so they "helped" with evening chores :)
49145709593_af9c807397_z.jpg

Miss Lily wanted to pull the sled so off they go !! All was well until she went off the driveway and couldn't pull them anymore. She smartly jumped back in the sled and hollered "Dad !! We're stuck come save us !!" So it would seem that it was my turn to be the mule again :lol_hitti

JBL: mailbox and snow fun look great. I have to say the women in your life pretty much have you figured out. one yells for DAD when she went a bit too far and your bride ROLLING HER EYES when you mention that mailbox sitting in your shop for a few years sounds all too familiar.

I don't mention that i'm getting ORGANIZED to my bride much anymore cause there are usually a few words with the rolling of the eyes, but i'm getting there.

let's hope the mailbox stays there for many many years to come and maybe if it was there before the old guy would have seen it and not fell in the ditch. :lol_hitti

just curious did you and dad and mom and friends get everything out of the fields before this big snow hit?

When I lived in Wausau, Wi. the snow plow had the traditional front plow and also had a 4' extended plow that was mounted just in front of the rear axle on the passenger side. Plow Driver had a habit of occasionally forgetting the side plow was there until he had pinged off several mail boxes. After about the third time of replanting the mailbox in the frozen tundra, I declared war! I got 3 pieces of "scrap" 4" stainless steel pipe from work and planted them in concrete, one for the box, 10' and 20' in front of the box. Even filled the pipes with concrete :) The 20'er took some shots and bent a little but the box was solid … until a drunk hit it from the opposite direction GRRRrrr

I'm pretty easy to figure out and within a few minutes of being around me most people know everything they need to about me. :lol_hitti

I tell people I like to be organized and although I really do mean it, it doesn't seem to happen as much as I'd like. Seems like something always has me going "OH LOOK A SQUIRREL !!!" and suddenly I'm distracted and moved onto something else.

Oh I'm sure the old guy (if it was him as it was just speculation on my part) would have hit this one as well. The green paint seems to attract attention. Our mail lady already left a note on the mail today that she likes the new mailbox WAY better so that's a plus

I have a few coworkers that have a few hundred acres each left but they always seem to be combining in January/February so I guess we're all about on track. I'd have liked to get more tillage done and a few rocks picked but we'll just have to burn more daylight in the spring to get fall tillage done then I guess.

Our township has a rule about doing things like that and that is a no go. I was suppose to throw this post away and put in one of those fancy "swing-away" posts that are suppose to shatter when something hits them. They're suppose to protect people from running into a 12" concrete filled post that some guy puts up so the snowplow doesn't tear it down. I am all for that 12" concrete filled post BUT "they" are not so I fix the one I have as it's "grandfathered in" until something happens to it. It is a 3" piece of solid shaft with a mounting plate on top. Pretty sure it'll be holding up a mailbox long after the post office has gone out of business. :lol_hitti

Is the combine axle ultra fix deferred til spring or summer?
Maybe both or maybe neither :dunno:

We decided we're sick of working in the cold so it'll wait until a "warmer" day. Probably one day when it's over 35F we'll tear it off, or start on it at least. We'll be bringing it to the shop of the guy that came to weld it up in the field to throw a few hundred pounds of new iron on it

The 4wheeler has 8ish inches of ground clearance ..... and it's dragging in the snow. It had to happen eventually but an 8" dumping the first snow is a lot. Annnnnnnd there's potentially another 12" on the way before Saturday night :shocking:

I think we got your storm a few days before you. We got about 3' at the house last week. At least it was light and fluffy stuff. We're supposed to get another 3' over the next few days of the heavy wet snow. Luckily we stocked up on shear pins for the snow blower. Also very glad I got my studded snows installed on the jeep!

6' of snow ?!?!?!?!?!

Gross you can have it !!!

Only good thing about that is it'd be fun to romp around in 3' of powder with the Jeep. That'd be a blast !! It'd be even more fun doing it in this tracked Niner. I do not remember what forum I pulled these from back in the day but this guy built a set of tracks using steel rims and snowmobile components. The build thread on them was pretty sweet and I save a few of the pictures to drool over.

That's my nightmare vehicle. If I could climb in and drive away, it would become my final resting place. OK, maybe with full-service gas station islands and drive-thru food joints I could survive for quite a while. But I am absolutely certain getting out of that Jeep would involve a broken hip and we all know what happens next -- surgery, rehab and nursing home.

You never cease to amaze me Bob :lol_hitti

I'd be right behind you shoving you into it and would gladly help break your fall on the way out if something like that ever showed up in my yard. Of course you'd have had to move up here and be my neighbor for this whole fairy tale to work out, that'd be a heck of a drive to come pick you up in that thing !!!

Not sure why we plowed snow on friday as there is another 6-8" on the ground today
49155055693_7c93c0d1ef_z.jpg

There was a weird wind from the east making a few odd sights around here. This is one of them. Neat but never seen it like this before !!
49155055788_1afd03706b_z.jpg

Meanwhile inside the barn the chicks are happily making a mess out of their feed trays. Seems it's time to adjust feeders again !!

The 2049 Shop floor has snow on it :headscrat
49155766722_ebca255b5b_z.jpg

I spent 15 minutes cleaning the foot of snow out of the run yard before Dad and I gave the steers some fresh bedding. The snow got in the barn a little with the weird East wind and got everything all wet and "mushy".

Thanks Drives !!

Dad is in Phoenix golfing, drinking Captain Morgan and eating pumpkin pie so I'm a one man show for this week and part of next. I have one of the busiest weeks at work I've had in a while and I have to pick up his slack (doing my own chores for once lol) and it's been a HEAD DOWN, EYES FORWARD, WIDE OPEN THROTTLE, STAY ALIVE kind of week :3gears:

Bob you just park next to a snow bank and slide on out and down!

Getting out is easy the snow cushions your fall! And if things due break there plenty off ice handy to dull the pain right away!

Just saying is all!

In case anyone was wondering the well by Dad is still overflowing :lol_hitti

Mixing feed out of the hopper bin is MUCH more enjoyable than out of a grain bin. Now, if there was just a LOT less snow it's be amazing

We had a neighbor bale up some monster 5'x6' corn straw bales to see if they'd be easier to use and I used the first of them yesterday. They sure are HUGE !!

Around 6pm last night a co-worker called and said his van died. It's my vans older sister so I thought I'd go drag him to the local Mopar dealer. Apparently at 140,430 miles the transmission digests itself and spits the parts out on the ground.
49178125917_371c62d370_z.jpg

And I finished the evening off by setting up a pair of Leica Builder 509's to use next week. These things are worth more than everything else in this picture combined, including the walls of the house !!

Some kind of digital GPS based measuring/surveying tool?

What started the Well overflowing? did a bunch of dirt get moved nearby? have a collapse underground or something?

That’s the standard size around our farm. Hoped to make 350 bales this fall, but only have about 150 due to the wet wet fall.
Never expected to make bales with mud on the tires, but this year was an exception.

We use them to map the exact coordinates of the antennas we install as part of the SmartBow activity/rumination monitoring system on dairy farms. It builds a 3D digital map and the computer uses it to be able to locate that cow to within a few feet of where she actually is. It makes finding her a lot easier as well as giving the system the ability to follow her around and build habits and patterns to help predict if she is not feeling well and may be getting sick. The customer gets alerted when there is a sick cow long before they may notice themselves just by looking at her. Happy healthy cows is what we are all after and this is an amazing piece of technology that makes that a lot easier !!

The well has been overflowing for a few months now. It's as wet around here as it's ever been and I think the water just wants out. The easiest path to the top kind of thing I guess :dunno:

We had a neighbor up here that was bailing while it started to snow. He said "Wet straw is better than bedding them with snowballs !!" Lol I guess so. We're also hoping to get more made in the spring but we'll see how it goes.

What month would be the soonest you need the combine back in operation?
Early August to do wheat. We've got plenty of time to get it back in shape

I'd like to get it torn apart this winter on warmer days and have it mobile again long before spring.

We'll have more room in the shed soon as the old combine is going to a new home in Wisconsin on Monday. I'll start on the axle repair once there is more room to spread out and make a mess :lol_hitti

Mother Nature decided that our unusually warmish start to winter was over. It's -4F right now and the fans are pumping some major steam out of the barn :(
49198580591_7a95bb009b_z.jpg

The calves and little people don't seem to mind. We did chores last night when it was 12F and they all were quite happy to see each other :)
49198580706_533985a1c9_z.jpg

The last few weeks I've been spending a wild amount of time in my little shop for work and I decided it was too cold to go back and forth from the shop to the house to make lunch so I brought the Pizzazz out to the shop :bounce:
49198780742_b6155b9852_z.jpg

Well for some reason I do not have an assembled photo but there is a US-24-250 switch in the second space from the panel and a Panduit FWME2 fiber enclosure mounted to a rack shelf in the 4th space from the panel. These are the boxes that will have all the SmartBow antennas plugged into them on the project we're currently doing. I built a plywood jig to GREATLY speed up the process of mounting the vertical racks in the same place for each box. There will be 43 boxes in all and almost 600 antennas when it's all running :wtf:
49198114978_e70cf489a6_z.jpg

I had a brain spasm that led to this simple idea. A piece of angle iron bolted to the side of my cart to hold these little plastic bins. Boy it sure works slick !!
49198808167_2d6058f016_z.jpg

We sold the 2144 to a nice fellow in Wisconsin and I got it loaded up yesterday morning in the cold out on the road a few miles from home. The trucker wanted to do it on a clean bare patch of tar so I had to go a ways to find some clean tar as it was all snowy and icy around home.
49198780962_5cec941cab_z.jpg

It's loaded and he's off on his way. Sort of sad to see it go as it's been around the farm since it had only 150hrs on it but the money it brought in from the sale will be nice to have as well

Yeah, chilly! I ended up clearing the driveway last night, I think it was about 0 at the time. It was pretty windy too. Actually was pretty easy with the wind - I just had the blower throw it straight into the air and the wind took it right to the yard before it landed! Needless to say, I always had the chute pointed downwind. A 0 degree whitewash is no fun!

I cleaned the driveways at home and dad's place with his skiddy which has a heated cab and I must say .... it's a wonderful piece of machinery compared to my 763 with no cab kit and no heater. I cannot imagine a snowblower pointed into the wind in 0F temps. Gross.

I pulled the little Deere into the shop a few days back so it could warm up and I could try to find the MASSIVE hydraulic oil leak that appeared during the last cleaning of the chicken barn.

That's the worst part about winter. I don't want a bunch of water freezing in the shop, and I don't want to turn into an icicle outside pressure washing/steam cleaning stuff to work on it. Skidsteer blew an auxiliary line (rarely used). Guess it can wait til spring for a bath lol.

As I continue to sand the body panels of my camaro for paint, I envy folks who are working on other things besides sanding.

Hope it's an easy fix on that hydraulic line, but you uttered the words that would jinx my progress. :lol_hitti

Oh yeah this little tractor is pretty much an oil slick by now from all the stupid leaks. Eventually I'll get them all fixed and maybe even paint the little guy but for now it's fix it as it breaks and move on.

I'm guessing those words are "Hopefully an easy fix" lol.

The camero looks quite nice sanded down and all. You know, you could clear it the way it is and call it "art" and everyone would drool over it for your creativity and ability to think outside the box. OR something like that :lol_hitti

Well it was a fairly simple fix once I found the correct size O-Ring. Seems this one didn't want to do it's job :dunno:

I added a monitor into the mix in the office area and feel like a big timer now !!!!
49209884671_795a2004c0_z.jpg

A big timer with a custom mount for the third monitor. I got sick of the third monitor being way off in left field so I goobered it up there with whatever I had. I used a junk USB cord to hold it back to the wall at the correct angle :bounce:

Put that on the note for next shop build; outdoor pad with heat pex on its own zone sloped to a linear drain.

Gosh Mike, I figured I'd check in on the farm since we both are back indoors for the most part of the season. I didn't realize I had to backtrack over 50 pages to catch up on what happened this past year! :shocking:
New combine, camper, wok (LOL) broken hydraulics...and yes, remembering how wet you all got as most of the rain in the midwest trained north and west of us. I really enjoy your thread as my cousin Marcia works her farm in Nebraska. Talk about rain...so much it broke the dam! She mostly grows grains for the farmers and leases her land as she is about your mothers age. But I have had a few farmers in the family and they all had horses...so what gives? Too much work for the amount of time actually enjoying them? Anyway, many thanks from a city slicker...I enjoy your thread! :lol_hitti

Put that on the note for next shop build; outdoor pad with heat pex on its own zone sloped to a linear drain.
Lol I have relatives that have a heated driveway. I can not imagine what that costs to run all winter !!!

Maybe he can rig the corn dryer to blow hot air on a wash pad.... :bounce:
Lol. Not a bad idea but the dryer is usually shut down before snow comes. There is an INSANE amount of heat that puts out though !!!

I like horses but you'll never see one on this farm. I think they are nice animals but they're a hobby farmers game

Yeah this thread has sort of gotten out of control, probably in a good way ?? One year ago Andy made post #1996 about this time of day and I think this will be post 3113 so 1117 posts and 56 pages in a year is pretty wild. I'm still blown away that what I do is worth so many people spending their valuable time following along with what we do out here. Thank you to all that do. I'm still having fun showing off a little so I certainly intend to keep this thing alive and well as we'll have plenty of fun in 2020. Thank you for following along !!!

We send a couple of steers that were getting older but not really growing to the local butcher shop a few weeks back and we picked the meat up today. Yikes. Literally a pickup full of meat !! Weiners, bologna, Ribeye's, T-Bones, Porterhouse, Sirloins, Tenterloins, Chuck roasts, Salomi and a bunch of hamburger.... Should last us a little while :bounce:

Time to fix the leaky steering cylinder on the 5510. It is LITERALLY running out of the seal on the right side ....
49220679577_fd8ee83f4d_z.jpg

It's a neat cylinder as it has the piston dead center with half the shaft going each way. Because of this I had to get a little creative with how I got the tie rods loose. The cylinder shaft is so hard that a pipe wrench will not bite in (plus I do not want to marr it up so it will wreck the seals down the road) ...

So I put a pipe wrench on the inner tie rod dealios on both sides and loosened the first one that came loose. I tightened a 1-1/16" wrench between the tie rod and cylinder so it wouldn't fall out when I broke the other side loose. It actually worked very well. If you were standing there drinking beer next to me instead of reading it on the internet it may make more sense.

Right one off !!

Left one off !! I ordered the seal kit a few days ago and it'll be in at a local Deere stealership Monday so I'm going to wait until then to tear it all apart.

I used to buy all my hyd. seals from the dealer, until I found I could get the same parts for 1/20th the cost, and the same quality from generic suppliers on line. You do a great job keeping up with all your equipment. Cheers, Mike

I'm glad your going to keep this thread going. I start my day by reading the news and then to Garage Journal. I find reading the various threads a perfect way to have my morning coffee and start my day. Out on Quaker Road is one of my favorites, its well written and well documented.
Thanks again for the amount of posting that you do.

I did look online first but the seal kit wasn't that much cheaper than it was at the dealer and we needed a few other things as well. I'm 110% certain this is not the last repair we'll be doing on this little Deere.

Mama Bears front drivers tire has a slow sidewall leak so the little guy and I are checking it and and will pump it up. He's a good little helper guy :)

It's hovering around -7F and things are snowy and steamy.

I noticed a cable broken on one of the vents in the barn so that needed to be fixed. Not a big deal. Just put another wing nut deal on it and moved the cable over. All is well again :)

Quite a while back in this thread somewhere it was discussed that an automatic charger for the Poultry Hawk would be a neat deal. Well here it is. I brought the idea up to the manufacture with a few suggestions on how to do it and they listened. Pretty neat to be a Dealer for a company that actually listens and works with you !!
