I took the day off from work and brought my laptop along in case I was needed remotely and good thing I did !! I think I spend 5ish hours doing stuff logged on to machines remotely supporting two different install crews on the way out there and back. Kind of like a paid day off I guess :rocker:

The main thing we talked about was how neat it'd be if we got home incident free, which we did so that was fantastic !!!

It seems I had a page open from before 6-27-20 so I found and copied over all the missing content as good as I could :bounce:

Dad bought a used Super M, the tractor was born the same year as I and we spent a lot of time together. Dad custom corn shelled with our "big tractor" an international 706 LOL and from the time I was 12, I did most of the 160 acres he cash rented. When the farm was rented out from under him, we moved to town, and he took the Super M with us. Directions, yeah just look for the red tractor in the driveway LOL I was a freshman in college then. 14 years go by and I walk into a business and there is a picture of a M on the wall. I'm looking at it, while waiting my turn and a guy walks up behind me and starts out saying wish I could find a good tractor like that for my collection. Turns out he owns the business and has 10 tractors in back. Told him I know where a Super M is but I don't know if he'll turn it loose. He says, got time? We can talk about it while I show you what I have. Quick stop turned into 2 hours LOL
Ended up, he bought it from Dad with a written bill of sale that if he ever sold it, I had first right of refusal. Business man now has 30+ restored tractors and I stop and see him and "my tractor" every two or three years. Business man is still mad at me because we junked out the 2ME corn picker. Farmall only made that model for 2 years and he has never seen one at all the collector shows he attends. Unique thing about the 2ME, the front snout on the picker was mounted on the front wheels and the snout turned with the wheels. So very easy to identify. They has special hubs that extended through dust caps on the wheel and the snout snapped onto those hubs. Didn't work as good in practice as in theory, especially in less than ideal conditions because if wet ground, the mud would build up inside snout and eventually pop the snout off the hub and if you didn't stop quickly, you drove it into the ground and destroyed it.

Thought you might enjoy a little history, if I'm annoying you, let me know and I'll knock it off And if you come across a 2ME I know a guy that would part with a left nut LOL
Always good to know the tractor has a good home and the 2ME would have been a neat thing to still have around !!!

Sifan said:
The conversation about the picker started with a phone call from business man, I'm taking "your" tractor to fairs and shows and everyone is asking me about the front hubs, what's with that, no one knew. Well, my Dad ran those hubs year round, figuring if he took them off, he would forget where he put them and grease isn't that expensive LOL farm logic LOL
Maybe one will show up from the ashes and it'll all be complete again :dunno:

Just checking in, the barn looks awesome! only four men 2 1/2 days it would take me 6 months

Your 245 mile trip at 35 mph made me laugh

Good to see you get away for a weekend and recharge
These guys work at a feverish pace for sure !! End of next week all the exterior steel will be on, early the following week the concrete guy is going to prep the inside for the infloor heat foam, end of the week the plumbers come to lay foam and heat pipes and the beginning of the following week the floor gets poured. I'm pretty stoked

It's not the furthest we've driven to bring something home but it was the slowest we came back home with it !!!

Er'ma'gawsh last weekend was nice. Drink a few beers, do some splashing in the wonderfully kid friendly lake and sleep in the camper. I always sleep like a hibernating grizzly bear in that thing for some reason.

I was VERY happy we made it home with almost zero bad events !!!

Aw, rip to the Farmall M. There's always a use for one on the farm
Although I strongly agree this one needed to go. It was too big and too small and very worn out. It's been used hard it's whole life and needed way more work than it was worth to bring it back to everyday use again. Plus it was not easy on fuel so even running an auger was kind of silly with it. I'm already on the hunt for a nice fixed up Super H or a 300

XJSuperman said:
Lotta cheap 460s floating around forsale in Iowa. Depending on condition, Hs are a dime a dozen. Since you hate mowing so much, maybe you need a cub and a belly mower...
460's are such COWS though lol. A Super C and a John Deere Unstyled B would be on the list as well. Or a MM R. I'm flexible I guess

I'd love to have a little Farmall A with a belly mower. I think that'd be neat :rocker:

XJSuperman said:
I thought Farmall guys liked 460s???
I hate em, they're the worst to pull against because they "cheat" with their TAs that we don't have on our 2-cylinder Deeres. Plus the guys always have their governors cranked.

Flexible is certainly one way to word it lol. Theres an unstyled B on craigslist down here. Flat spoke rears. Decent but not fully restored appearance.

I have a line on a couple cubs in Ohio that would be reasonable to get to you, but not worth the trouble probably. Ive got a super C too, but its not for sale. There is at least one on craigslist in Iowa right now though.
I foolishly passed on a VERY nice mostly restored (just needed paint yet) 1936 Huber Model C not all that long ago. It was too much money for me but was a really neat tractor !!

Grandpa had an H so I guess that's why I'd like an H or Super H. Those old 2cyl Deeres sound sooooo nice when they're under load so that's the reason for one of those. I drove the **** out of a MM R that I helped restore when I was in JR High so I guess that's why that one is on the list as well.

There are lots of all of these available it's just a matter of taking the time to look at them and find the "right" one I guess :dunno:

The camping trip was a fantastic relief from the daily BS we all run into. I enjoy that daily BS for the most part but this was fun. We went with a very close friend of mine from high school (actually the son of the owner of Leedstone) and it was amazing to reconnect again. Our kids are the same age as theirs so everyone had someone to play with.

My old Igloo cooler took a beating over the weekend so I put some SS hinges and screws on it ....

And a little chunk of SS chain for the new lid holder will do nicely :bounce:
50058609961_b7bbd9a821_z.jpg

Once we got home it was back to work !! I started digging in the waterline from the pump house to the shop while Dad was at a grad party for a neighbors kid. Stupid MN and the need to go 7' down to keep it from freezing is going to make this a LOOOOOOONG dig !!!
50058852197_994692649e_z.jpg

How deep should we go ?? Quite a ways !!!
50058609931_06462e3f46_z.jpg

After a little debating I'm putting 2-4" non-perf drain tiles to house the water line, some electrical (maybe) and a fiber optic line one day. A good portion of the water line will be under concrete once the shop gets it's planned cold storage area so I wanted it to be easy to replace if needed. If the plastics run and wear though I can always put a new line in. The worst that'll happen is the pump house floods. Not a big deal as it's got a floor drain :)
50058609921_d5eba27af3_z.jpg

A fellow GJ member to the South of us said he got 1.25" of rain in 20 minutes so we had to hurry and get it dug past the waterway so it wouldn't all fill in with mud if that made its way up here as well !!
50058609856_f82dcd8972_b.jpg

We got about 2/3 of the water line dug into the shop and backfilled before it started to get dark. The rain really picked up the last 45 minutes we were working but it's been so dry here that nothing ran across the surface and it all soaked in.
50058852267_3b0f7e1b47_b.jpg

6-28-20
There was "some" 8" solid tile left over from the job we did this spring and since it was paid for we left it there as the guy said he'd use it up somewhere. I called him and asked if I could have 30' or so to use to go from inside the shop to the outside to run a future outdoor boiler heat pipe through. He said come get some. I got there and he asked how much I wanted, I said 30-40' and he said "okay" and got into the skid loader. He loaded the whole damn roll up and said "you take it all or you take none of it. I'm sick of it laying around and I don't think I'll ever use any more of it !!!" All for the low price of a case of Miller High Life. I think I'll get him two cases of bottles. There is around 200' on here and it was $1.32/ft cost so that seems fair. He said it was good with him so I said thank you and drove away.
50059917033_b6d4863111_z.jpg

When I left Dad had started digging from the shop towards the spot we quit at last night. He was working on connecting the trenches when I got back.
50060480831_03777d0147_z.jpg

Down in the trench I went with a shovel to do the finishing work.
50060726762_22e4086301_z.jpg

He got it pretty nice with the excavator but I still had to move quite a bit of heavy sticky clay. Oh well, I need the exercise !!
50060480846_c58c81e82a_z.jpg

Just like last night as we were finishing up it started to rain.
50060726747_c5cc9dc03f_z.jpg

Annnnnd then it opened up and DUMPED on us !! If you look towards the center left of the picture you can see the rain blowing off the old hay shed roof. It's been a while since I worked in the blowing rain and didn't have one complaint. Sure we got drenched BUT the crops got a drink and for that we were so thankful we couldn't even start to grumble. Things were REALLY dry and we didn't get much rain last night.

Too late now cause you're already done, but was told by an old-timer that if you're not deep enough for the frost, to put 2-3 inches of peat moss on it. It will stop the freeze from reaching the pipe.
No idea if it works.
Makes sense as it'll insulate the pipes from the frost. I think these lines will be fine as I plan to blow air through them from the warm shop into the pump house to see if I can heat it that way. It may work, it probably won't but I'm going to try and see what happens

50063985977_3276c97463_z.jpg

Next up is to play with a really sweet concrete core drill to drill the holes through the pump house floor.
50063985962_c6b6e7b6c4_z.jpg

Whilst I had it in the pump house I figured I'd drill an extra hole for the house water line for next year.
50063985942_10a99337ef_z.jpg

I see daylight under the floor !!!
50063727526_9925a02160_z.jpg

And there they are. One for the water line and one for a couple conduits with data lines one day. Whoo hoo !!
50063985907_c33eacc2da_z.jpg

The inside the shop pipes are "set" as well. That extra BIG one is for a outdoor wood boiler line one day :bounce:

Nice! Sheet metal on already?
Not yet. We got slowed down by some much needed rain. They'll be here tomorrow to start the exterior sheet metal :bounce:

Thanks for the updated, redo.

Since it was raining like crazy Wednesday morning we cut up the foam into the right sized pieces. The 2" thick stuff got cut into 24" strips for the vertical thermal barrier for the floor heat system and the 1-1/2" stuff got cut into 9.5"ish pieces to be stuffed between the poles and the tin to provide a thermal break there.
50070774757_87a0f127ee_z.jpg

It quit raining but was still rather muddy so I mixed a load of feed for the steers.
50069960978_02a12f5fa3_z.jpg

When I came in for lunch I noticed the hoop shed skeleton had fallen down !!!
50070772822_f1d5cdc65b_z.jpg

Once the mud dried out a bit we started digging the foam in.
50070521691_79b5f87f81_z.jpg

This was pretty miserable in the mud. Oh and it was 93F and about 125% humidity with a 95F dewpoint. Okay well maybe not that bad but it was 93F and way too humid !!
50069961003_bee7ce30e8_b.jpg

The foam is all in and it's backfilled with sand so it'll settle nice when I hit it with some water.
50069960968_70ffaf6ccd_z.jpg

The builder guy put the building 2' too far South and could have lifted it up about 4" all over so we didn't have to dig dirt out to get down to grade !!!!
50070519881_791e78a1d2_z.jpg

It's being dumped as fill on the North side of the shop as I wanted that filled in more anyway. So not all bad but hours of wasted time moving dirt around that has been moved twice already !!!!
50070519891_7c1f883636_z.jpg

"Any idea what you're doing?"
"******* on the left, floor drain in the middle and another pipe for sinks and a vent ..... so kind of. Why ?"
"No reason. It'll look way better when it's all buried though."
"Hurrrufh."
50070772817_a919bf10a7_z.jpg

We used those custom 0-5 degree couplers to get the pipe to go where we wanted it too :lol_hitti
50070772797_3ca880473b_z.jpg

Left to right .... *******, bathroom floor drain, data lines pipe, water line pipe, outdoor boiler pipe, sink/vent pipe, 200a electrical pipe, 2" conduit for gas line pipe. Doesn't look like much but I have a newfound appreciation of anyone that does this underground plumbing/electrical for a living !!! Tomorrow we hope to get the rest of the underground electrical roughed in.

Looking good and quickly ... you'll be wrenching and looking for your 10mm before you know it :)

It seems like there can never be enough 10mm anything and I can start the day with 100 tape measures and not have the wildest clue where more than 1 or 2 are by the end of the day. I bet I own 30 tape measures and can tell you where MAYBE 4 or 5 are right now :eyecrazy:

The builder guy crew showed up this morning around 6am to try to beat the heat and get the roof on today. I took this picture around 7am. They move along !!
50072546166_40dc2bd0ff_c.jpg

The shade inside the building is going to be SOOOOO nice to work in !!!
50072795527_9367f51074_c.jpg

They're moving right along because there is an extra guy today. Five Guys instead of four.
50072796052_f0eab3b6b9_c.jpg

By 9am they were done and gone and off to drink beer at a campsite somewhere. Or at least a couple of them were. One kept shouting "Boy am I ready to drink beer when we get to the campsite today!!!" and someone else'd holler back "YUP!!" and there were a few "MmmmmmHmmmmm's" mixed in as well.
50072794072_2bac7b61b5_c.jpg

I took the plunge and purchased a DJI Mavic Mini used off fleabay and I must say it is awsome. It had less than 2hrs flight time so it was almost new. Plus it came with a really nice hard case, 512Gb Memory Card, 6 batteries, and some other small stuff. All for under $500 !! A new Mavic Mini Fly More combo is $500 alone !!! It is much easier to get in the air than my sisters Spark so she can have that back finally. I think this thing is going to get used a lot :bounce:

you will def want a vent near the ******* on the left. you'll be pulling the floor drain trap dry. cost is minimal to put in.
you can tie the sink and ******* vent together in the ceiling and send one 3" vent out the roof.

edit: also the 200a panel isn't going in the bathroom is it? its going on the other side of the wall?

The drone shots has really helped me understand the layout of the farm and the improvements that your family has done. If I remember correctly the first project I saw here was a well being drilled. Your farm has come a long way!
New shop is going to be kick ***.
I cant wait until you pull the first project in.
Thanks for sharing.

Yup. The drain is gonna get sucked dry this way. I'm gonna finish the rest of the underground plumbing and electric if I have time (I should) I'll go back and add a vent just for the pooooooper. Cost isn't an issue as almost all the plumbing and some of the electrical is second-hand stuff or leftovers from jobsites that was on a bid job.

I'm more than likely going to be putting a divider wall in there so the humid bathroom stuff is away from electrical stuff.

I like the drone stuff too !! The pump house I dug the 4" non-perf lines into was the first building we built. That and the steer barn went up in 2015.

Mama Bear said I could build ONLY one thing a year which I think means I have to build one thing a year :bounce:

I thought your shop was HUGE ... until I saw that last drone shot ... why so small??? :)
I also thought it was small.when it was first going up and now that I'm digging the underground electrical lines in I'm wondering why it's so big !!! At least the roof is in now so I can work in the shade.

Oh if I forgot about it past the point of tearing up concrete and doing it later I'd have a watering can next to the floor drain to fill it up whenever I flush turds down. There are no plumbing inspections here so no one would have caught it but you all that read this !! So thanks :)

The roofs look purple on my monitor? Brown?
It's Koko Brown steel from Whirlwind in Freeport, MN. Koko Brown and Ivory have been the colors for all the buildings with the exception of the chicken barn roof being galvanized because that's what they said it had to be for some reason :dunno:

Shop will be getting the same wainscoting the other buildings have. It's also going to be getting a small porch out the side door towards the hay shed. It should look nice when it's all done !!

With lots and lots of underground electrical lines to run I thought I'd make a little something to make it easier.
50080652886_d75a17615d_z.jpg

I think it'll work !!!
50080652766_e2b10224cd_z.jpg

Okay well .... I had to beef up my equipment mover deal because I tore it all up inside of the first 15' of digging. After beefing it up and trying again and bending it somewhere else I parked it. I think it'd work great to dig in a shallow water line around the yard but in this hard packed clay it was a struggle ....
50080652841_d7bd7ca674_z.jpg

So instead I dug 5" deep trenches for the electrical conduits with the mini-hoe. Once filled with sand this will work as well.50080899537_6e185d215b_z.jpg

Well a bit out of order here but the main shop drain is plumbed and the boot wash right inside the East man door is plumbed in.
50080074693_7977b43f19_z.jpg

Lots of pipes !!! I was determined not to heat and bend anything that didn't have to be so I got a bit creative around the tighter corners ....
50080652806_f48fa4f9c3_z.jpg

An 18" piece of 1/2" rebar with the conduits ziptied onto them works quite well to hold them in place until I backfill with dirt.
50080074668_c284116bd0_z.jpg

Turns out it was a good thing I didn't dig with the little chisel point I made. There is a "little bit" more stuff here than I thought there would be !!!
50080652736_7c9cc5159e_z.jpg

I built a template for the conduits to come through that should match up nicely with a 6x6 trough when the "real" electricians come.
50080899567_3da7f40a82_z.jpg

After I put the first few pieces through it I was quite happy that I took the time to put it together. I couldn't figure out an easier way to keep them all in line and nice looking !! Maybe this is how the "pros" do it all the time and I'm not showing anything you haven't seen 100x already but it sure is handy !!

1-1/2" thick untrimmed ribeyes

I put in another "y" just after the elbow going down from the ******* and it's own vent going up so it'll be good now :rocker:

that'll work.

side question: you got any corn left in the bins from '19 harvest? is it storing ok?

The corn seems fine so far. We've been hauling in in and off to fill contracts and it's been ok so far.

And I thought it was me when I got confused trying to understand what ya saying . . .
It took me a while to get it all straightened in my head while I was laying it out.

So you're going to use a lot less wire vs running everything around the walls right
Plus I had a iot of the conduit so I only had to supply my labor, which isn't worth much I guess .

Have you labelled all those conduits?
Naw. They will fish tape them from the outside walls to see which one they use. They will all be in a gutter anyway so it's not a big deal. I did check what they wanted l first so I'm actually following instructions :dunno:

Family farm just sold every last bushel at garbage prices. it was starting to go bad. 2019 was terrible for farmers in SWMN. this year they got 2k acres planted in under 2 weeks.
That ***** about selling the old crop for **** prices but it's still better than totally turning to garbage and not being worth anything I guess ....

We were done planting this year before we even began last year it seems. Just nuts. Now if the rest of the year would have been more "normal" that would have been great but we all know that's not the case so far .....

The conduit template is full finally !!

Now that the sand is filled in around them my OCD can calm down knowing it looks great up top but is secretly a mess down below. It's ok though !!!

Mid day on Monday it looked like this. I am still impressed at the speed of these guys !!!

Mom and Dad got the "new" 6 belt Case IH 1015 pickup header unloaded.

The belts were in sort of crappy shape we decided to replace them with all new ones. They should last an easy 40 years for as much as we use them !!!

The little people wanted to check out the shop so we went to look at how nice and smooth the concrete guy got the floor in preparation for the under floor foam.

With every picture I take with this little pocket sized drone I am more impressed !!! It's easy to fly and takes amazing photos. The shop floor is incredibly flat. This guy does great work !!!

We shall call this the "after thought splurge porch" I am quite excited about it :bounce:

Dang, I want one... Nice shop.... Still following along...

Mike
Thanks for letting me draaaaaaaaag you along on the adventures out here

I'm honestly still in the "dang I want one" stage as well. We've talked about a larger shop for so long and now that it's happening I almost do a double take when I drive by it :)

Very Nice! Shop is looking great, and new belts on the header wow. Im not sure i fully understand the conduit placement, is there going to be a wall next to it? That would make more sense now that I think about it.

I just saw a SuperC and Woods belly mower in Ames on c-list in good shape. Check it out sometime. I was doing my morning price checks lol.

Mike, now that is a shop! That is going to be great for you to use in the future.
Looks like you will beat your timeline (2049) and I hope you come in under budget as well.
Love the drone photos, is it easy to fly?

I'd hard wire motion lights on the porch. nothing stinks that walking around the yard in the dark praying the parts guy didn't leave the sharpest possible part in at shin level near the door.

edit: not a 500000000 lumen LED one. honestly i'd love to use some LED strip tape in a channel like below. Hell get fancy and route in the YW style into the underside of the exposed cedar beams.

That is soooo cool. And come this winter with the in-floor heating.......so awesome!

:beer::beer:
The guy from the hottest state in the union is talking about in-floor heat being awesome. This makes me giggle :bounce:

The conduit tower will be right up against a wall in the utility/bathroom. We measured once and cut twice :rocker:

That looks like a decent price for what's all there. 3pt and a wide front included with it. I want to see how the money shakes out from the shop project and then I'll be looking more seriously for a little toy tractor :)

The timeline will be smashed to pieces but it might be that long until I actually own it :lol_hitti

I don't think anyone that has ever posted anything on this site ever has said "Hey guys guess what ?!?!?! I came in UNDER budget !!!"

The drone is easier to fly than the DJI Spark my sister has. It connects in moments and you're off and flying. It has a "Cinema" mode for flying that really limits the speed and the video looks really really smooth. I think you could film movies with this thing if you were good at flying it !!!

I like the motion light idea but every raccoon and cat would be constantly turning them on. I really like the strip light idea though. I was thinking of a single recessed can light with a red bulb in it maybe :dunno:

with the soft LED stips just iluminating that area it won't be too bothersome. on for 10 seconds.

or open up trap and transport season. or hunting. either way really.

they put a 10,000 lumen motion light on the shop at the farm and it blasts you at 2am. super jarring.
