I can't tell you how much this simply reply means to me. I truly appreciate you following along and being interested in what we do on the farm !! If there is anything you'd like to see more of please let me know !!

I have a feeling "retirement" will be short lived. I gave them a number they can get me back for on my time on my schedule and was told "Nope, too much" so I hope they don't call but I did leave that door open.
Good deal -- I've been following along, but don't usually have much to add (about stuff I know so little about). I'm always interested in your "self-employed" stuff -- tiling, custom seeds, etc. (in March 2000, I told my boss much the same thing you and Bob did).

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the new manager (he actually sounded somewhat similar to one of Bob's former bosses; I wonder if they're distant cousins?). I think you said you were friends with the company owner? That might make it more difficult for you to decide whether you want to go into "competition" with them and work directly for the farmers who need service on all the Wi-Fi equipment you installed. They're the ones who are really going to be hurt if none of your former coworkers are interested in stepping up and mastering the IT side of the business. It sure would be easier if he'd just hire you as a consultant at your rate. If not, maybe you could talk with the owner and work something out where you just did the jobs his guys weren't qualified to do?

Mike, by any chance did your micro-manager work for IBM back in the '90s? I was proud to be one of the 'soft' managers and lucky to have a couple of outstanding teams -- both of which earned the largest awards ever given for the kind of work they did.

EDIT: looks like Rick beat me to it.

Leedstone was/is a great place to work and has a lot of good things going for it as a place of employment. I am glad that I made the decision to "retire" before new manager took office or it'd look like he chased me out. Well I told him he was the reason I was leaving already so I guess that cat is out of the bag :lol_hitti

When talking with the owners they said if they need help, and they likely will they both said, they will call and pay whatever it is that I need. Send the bill and it'll get paid. I do not intend to go into "competition" with them of any kind. The owners have a sizeable dairy farm and I'd like to have the opportunity to sell them seed corn so no need to compete for pennies when I can make dollars :lol2:

They are actively looking for a "IT Support Technician" that will be doing most of what I did. Once they find that person they asked if I would be willing to come back to impart whatever knowledge I can. I said yes of course but on my terms.

Mr Micro Manager is built like Paul Teutle Sr minus the mustache and was a bar tender in the 90's. He really is a good dude but he's struggling with becoming the manager over his former peers and can't seem to grasp that we're just as capable now as we were before he was the boss. A good manager will lead you without making you follow. He can't see that for some reason. Oh well. Not my problem anymore !!!

When I woke up this morning I thought someone had spread fertilizer thick enough for us to plant sugar beets but NOOOOOOOOOOO ..... It was more damn snow !!!
51977904978_84f845a8dc_b.jpg

I procured these LARGE beams to use in the wood shed build. I plan to use them to line the walls so I can dump wood in with the skiddy and push it forward as I put more wood in. Should be stout enough to take a beating literally forever !!!
51978109794_c615685733_b.jpg

They were formally floor joist beams that held up the second story of an old chicken barn. They have joist hangers on them that need to be removed before we can use them in the wood shed so off they come !!
51976821252_da397c32d2_b.jpg

These things are HEAVY !!! When I picked up the 15 of them the skiddy was a bit light in the rear end !! They must be 300lbs each or so to make that happen.
51977904558_a7aeb600a4_b.jpg

I didn't take any pictures when the seed warehouse was plump full but this is how it looks now. The pallet racking worked out VERY well !!!
51976821647_d9a80b504f_b.jpg

That is a shot of about 1/4 of the soybeans we've sold so far this year. The others are waiting to be shipped as well as some of them are behind me in the picture.
51977904893_5a194b8b66_b.jpg

Neighbor guy Paul is taking the tile plow so he can hook it to his Deere 9300 and have someone make a tow cable kit for it so we don't have to climb under it to hook a chain up all the time. Should be nice !!

It sounds like you'll have a good working relationship with them on IT stuff, and hopefully they'll be a seed customer as well. I wonder if they'll be able to find a new IT tech with some level of farming knowledge or experience, who's able to come close to your level of detail on the barn installations. Like you said -- not your problem anymore!

That is some stout lumber for the wood shed! I like your plan for filling it with the S300, because I've heard those boilers go through some serious quantities of wood, especially with the temps your area gets over the winter. Growing up in Michigan, we heated our house with wood, but our winters were mild compared to yours and we had an efficient woodstove in the house. I wonder if you'll go through 5+ cord each winter?

Hey Bob, sorry to jump the gun on posting your story!

Among GJ members following threads, I'm not sure which is more surprising: that I remembered the story about your old boss and posted it here, or that you posted it here right after me (especially with how many threads you follow).

Hey JBL
we are missing your posts on here. Is everything OK?
Everything is great !! Crazy busy but great !! I have tried to figure out how I seem to be busier now than when I had a "real job" and haven't been able to figure it out. I think all the to do lists that have been pushed back into the far reaches of my cranium have all flew to the front at once. It is becoming apparent that I will not get it all done "now" and am trying to prioritize things. Such as ..... wood boiler is more important to get installed than closing in the lean-to on the shop .... sleeping is slightly more important than closing in the lean-to on the shop .... so the lean-to remains un-closed in as of yet :lol_hitti

Indeed! I think I saw one of your posts elsewhere but have been curious about this thread!
Yeah I poked at a few things from my phone the last few weeks. I stay in touch with a few members on here via text/snap/calls and a few have asked why I went GJ silent and I assure you it is not on purpose. It hit me this morning why though .... A lot of the posts I've made the last, well forever I guess, have been when I was already by my workstation for "work stuff" that I do not have to do anymore. I'd update things on here while tossing a sysprep image on a machine or doing any number of things while being trapped in the office. Lots of downtime waiting for things to happen so on here I'd come !!!

Seed deliveries in the man-van work well when it's raining and snowing and all crappy. That spendy seed stays nice and dry !!

Got the ol' Sthil saw tuned up and running again. Lots of wood to cut up to feed that monster of a furnace I purchased !!

We received 3" of rain in 20 minutes .... twice within 3hrs and it raised all holy hell in the fields we had already planted. What a MESS !!!!

A half mile North of us a buddy faired worse than we did with a bunch of rather large hail and winds that knocked over tons of trees.

This is our middle child. She is either wide open or at a touch above idle. Not much in between !! She had a loose tooth and I told here we should pull it out with a pliers and she said "OKAY !!" ..... well .... she's not one I want to mess with when she gets older I do believe !!!

Load #1 of 15 home so far. I think there will be at least that many again if not more. We had a ditch cleaned out and there were a TON of trees in it !! It was around 1/4 long so there is plenty to do !!

Mama Bear and I got invited to a Twins Game and got to hang out in the Budweiser Sports Deck at the new Twins Stadium. It was a rather fun time :)
52148944350_2e41ac0161_b.jpg

I combined all the leftovers in the fridge in a fry pan, threw in a couple eggs and some cheese and boom ... breakfast. Not sure why this is GJ worthy but there is it :lol_hitti

When this is finished Mama Bear will be happy !! She's been parking outside for a few weeks while I work on this in my "spare time"
52148694954_75f93a6311_b.jpg

I took some time out to go to an auction a few weeks back. I always feel like I buy too much stuff but this time I know I should have purchased more. TONS of tools and tooling that went cheap but one only has so much $$$$$$$$$$$. I filled the back of a pickup and had to go back with a trailer so I did okay I guess .....

Should have enough abrasives for a while
52148459726_55310a6fd1_b.jpg

There are a dozen 14" grinder wheels. 1-4' in width. Guess I need to build a monster grinder now. I'm thinking 5hp 3PH chain drive built off an old truck rear end ....
52148695529_0bcf4a6375_b.jpg

It was kiddo night at the local baseball yard so we went as a family and had pizza, popcorn and sunburn. The kiddos all got a baseball and the entire St. Cloud Rox team signed it. They were only "a little" excited
52148460101_035b3d9f8e_b.jpg

Time to level shavings out in the chicken barn. Chicks come in a week so it's time to start prepping the barn for their arrival.
52148473938_17bf288160_b.jpg

I showed the concrete earlier but never the finished shed we built to store the chicken POOOOOOOOOOOOOP !! So here it is.
52148695929_1fc3001922_b.jpg

The last few weeks I've been working on hauling all the corn straw bales into the shed so they stay out of the rain. They're soggy from all the rain this spring so I've been stacking them single with room around them to dry before putting them on the big stack.
52148949195_c535f12766_b.jpg

I decided to make some small square bales to remind me not to do that again. What a PITA :lol_hitti
52148474238_27ccbafd8c_b.jpg

I ordered this massive chest freezer in August '21 and it finally came in a few weeks ago. The freezer that was here went to the new house, the one in the new house is just a little one we had in our apartment when we were first married and it'll stay in the new garage as an overflow freezer when we need the space, the one in the old hayshed got emptied out and put into this new one. So we went from 1 dinosaur, 1 little bitty one and one in the shop to two large freezers.
52147440442_eac99a9605_b.jpg

Almost 100% meat in there
52147440612_c3c11557f9_b.jpg

Still on the to do list ......
Install A/C in new house
Finish concrete pad by house
Install floor/unload system in grain bin
Dirtwork for wood boiler shed
Install drainage pipes under wood boiler shed
Run heat pipes for wood boiler
Build between a 16x20 and 24x32 building by boiler for wood storage
Haul 120,000lbs of granite pavers home
Dirtwork under porch for patio
Wood ceiling in porch
Plant Grass around house sometime ?
Close in lean-to on shop
Install dual 18" culverts a total of 170' from pump house to ditch by road
Build loft in shop
Fill loft with junk
De-Rust Wiskek Wok and make STEAKS
Buy a "new" truck
Buy a "new" goosneck trailer
Drag home 95' BEAUT of a motorhome and yank the big block 460 out of it
Rebuild 460 into 557 and install in 84' Grand Marquis
Do burnouts in Grand Marquis
Put new tires on 7630
Install mini-split system in shop/shoffice/upstairs room in shop
Organize lean-to (it's bad)
Organize area above skid loader shed in hay shed (it's worse)
Build monster grinder
Try to remove more things from the to do list than I add to it .....

Mike, I thought of you often these past few months. Seems like the moment you decided to farm full time the world decided to mess with farmers. War in Ukraine makes fertilizer prices quadruple, Avian Flu infects millions of chickens that have to be destroyed and the weather does its best to dry up or drown your land. Did I mention the price of diesel, gasoline and natural gas? I also understand chicken feed is no longer a synonym for cheap!

On the bright side, you started building your new home before construction materials went completely nuts, and bought a wood furnace before the rest of the population could make them unobtainable. The icing on the cake is that you, Mama Bear and the little people are thriving!

No pressure to take time away from living the life to feed the GJ but we do love to hear from you. However, we will be very disappointed if news of a 557-powered land yacht shows up in a police report before it shows up here.

Maybe you can do some surfing when the tractor is on autopilot!
I had to read that a couple times to realize what was going on cuz I can be a little bit slow sometimes :lol_hitti

No autopilot on any of our machinery just yet. Still gotta stay awake and mostly sober

Yesterday my BIL was grumbling about it costing $80 to fill his car and I laughed. He didn't think it was funny at all and told me so. I says "Not that it's a contest but our largest tractor holds 200gal of diesel and I can do the math for you if you'd like. It's all about perspective, your tank lasts you a whole week, mine lasts around 20hrs so about two days. Close to $1/minute to use it." He didn't have much to say.

High prices come and go. Both in the input and sales side. Farmers buy retail and sell wholesale so it's nothing new to us. Just a little more extreme is all.

I do enjoy this community and like updating this thing and really need to spend some time on it cuz I thoroughly enjoy it !!

Mike nice to see an update, glad to see you and the family are doing well. Looks like you are as busy as ever.

Jay
I'm so busy I'm considering taking applications for an assistant :lol_hitti

Nice list, although I think you have missed one import point

Stop and smell the roses!
Taking time to smell the roses for me means trying to spend more time with the kiddos. I think I have been doing a fair job of that the last few months !!

I'll bet the roses smell a lot like chicken s#it out on Quaker Rd.

Good to see you posting again Mike. I can't wait to see where "retirement" takes you and the farm.
I am also quite excited to see where this farming adventure leads me. A few additional farm related business opportunities have arisen and I'm quite excited about that as well !!

Our little 16' Sukup continuous flow grain dryer drinks 880gal of $2ish propane in 23hrs and it's just a little guy.

$1,760ish over 23 hrs works to "only" $0.15/bu. Again, all about perspective. With corn at $7ish/bu it hurts less than propane being $1/gal with corn at $3/bu. Farming math is so fun :lol_hitti

you guys ever consider getting a bullet so you can buy by the tanker load? roughly half per gallon that way. just depends on your burn rate for the ROI.

of course if you go that path you wont need to dry corn for 5 years.

A transport of propane would last us less than a year and yes it's been discussed. Last year we used less than 1,000gal though. It's take a looooong time to pay for itself so we continue to have the 1,000gal tank filled I guess.

Hey Mike, thank you for the update, makes me happy to see you and your family doing well.
Thanks for following along all this time !! I'm going to try taking more pictures and such and make a point of sharing on here again. Still lots going on lol

love reading about what you have been up to. thanks

Sure stinks some years you're burning 20k gallons in a month. some years just to heat the house/shop/steaks.

When the chickens are little and the barn needs to be at 92F and it's -25F outside it drinks 375gal/day ...... There are 4x1,000 tanks there though so it lasts a while

Shop/house last year used 2,000gal I think. The wood boiler is going to be nice this winter !!

It's great to see an update again! I know life in general is busy and farm-life is an organized chaos this time of year so thanks for taking the time to do an update.

What brand of wood boiler are you going with? I need to do something about the heating situation here and have been exploring different options.

Organized chaos is right lol. Make a plan at 5am and before I even get out of the house around 6am it's already changed 8.3 times. Sometimes so far away from what I was thinking I have no idea what is going on. Sometimes it changes and goes right back ..... Until I get outside lol

I went with a Crown Royal 7400MP. Pictures in the post below. I'd love to elaborate on why if you'd like !!

Seriously -- I don't know how you keep up with everything on your farm! I have a hard enough time keeping up with projects and equipment maintenance around my house and yard, and I'm not running a business here. I realize your Dad helps too, but you also spend a ton of time on his farm. For you it must seem like: two people, two farms, and not enough time in the day!

I'm anxious to see how much would you go through in a typical week.
And thanks for the updates. I always enjoy reading your thread!

The simple things seem to get lost sometimes .... Like updating this thread .... and paying bills. It's okay though because eventually someone reminds you you're behind on both :dunno:

Dad and I sort of farm together .... separately ... We run the crops together but he pays for *most* of the inputs, we run the steers together but I pay for *most* of the inputs, the chicken barn is 100% mine but he helps ALOT, he gets *most* of the money for the custom work we do whether its his equipment or mine, I am paying for the farm shop and he keeps the snack drawer filled, we trade labor by buying each other a hot dog at an auction once in a while ..... That seems a lot simpler than it seems for real !! It works. Don't sweat the small stuff and it all works out ...

I also sell seed and do custom tiling work for/with a neighbor. He and I are constantly trading machinery and labor and do our best at the end of the year to square up. That is a way larger mess than what Dad and I do. I think I'm taking advantage of the neighbor sometimes and he thinks he's taking advantage of me sometimes so as long as that feeling continues I think we'll both be good. Again, don't sweat the small stuff.

Don't trip over a dollar to pick up a penny but don't leave the damn penny there either though !!!!

The lawn mower wouldn't do it so time to drag my dirty camper out with a skid loader with a VERY dirty windshield ....

Time to play tire changing roulette !!

This one has great tread but has a slight sidewall crack.

Since it's not flat yet it CLEARLY isn't shot. It's hard to time it perfectly so it goes flat in the yard and not on the road though .....

If anyone wants a beautiful white Chatsworth full size server/data cabinet come get it !! I ended up using a half height APC NetShelter in the house so I do not know what I'm going to do with this beauty anymore ....

I may have a 2-post or two or three around that I can part with as well in the midst of this mess on top of the shed in a shed in the hayshed. 52162752833_31ce98f95b_b.jpg

I sure do like having a forklift around. Saves a lot of lifting with the ol' back !!

I rarely comment, but I regularly follow your progress and growth (congrats on hammering through the house, btw) and celebrate with you on every new equipment acquisition. You are managing a heck of a grind, seemingly effortlessly.

Slightly random question, but:
As you have had it for at least a season or two: does using the drain tiler impact frost heave of rocks, seasonally? Any difference in heave rates of stone close to where the tile is sunk? Do you think (or have you seen) a change in activity due to moisture content of the subsoil?

I have been enjoying following the activity and capabilities of the drain tiler, and happened to scroll past some of the earlier posts of yours regarding frost heave and stone, and got to wondering. Thanks!

Best of luck moving forward, it has been a pleasure to watch.

Thank you for following along and posting in here !!

Managing the heck of a grind has been taking a fair bit of Windsor lately but it keeps going !!

I can honestly say I've never given that particular aspect of the soil profile having less saturation in it much thought. It makes sense though. Wet and damp soils will move more when they freeze/thaw so yeah, I'd wager to guess rocks should come up slower. All the more reason to put another couple hundred thousand feet of tile in the ground !!!

Well if this isn't a teaser picture I don't know what is .....

Okay okay okay I'm not great at teaser stuff !! That right there is a 1976 Camaro wearing a Bright Orange dress with a hot little 350 4BBL Turbo 400 trans, Doug Thorley headers, factory A/C, Power locks/windows, tilt column, NO RUST AZ CAR !!!!!! It looks to be on a borrowed trailer behind a borrowed truck. I don't own anything trustworthy enough to go on a road trip to bring this beauty home so one BIL donated the truck and another donated the trailer ....

Why a '76 you may ask ... Well that is LeRoy in the car and he purchased a 1976 Camaro brand new as his first car. Mom/Dad traded it in on a 1988 Chevy Caviler Wagon because I didn't fit in the back seat of the Camaro. Since it was "my fault" that his left I though it fitting to do my best to bring it back into his life if the opportunity ever arose. I was cruising Craigslist a while back and spotted this gem on there and called the guy. I called Mom and my sister as well and it was unanimous. The car needed to be ours. Thankfully Pops didn't have a Shelby Mustang or CoPo Camaro and it was actually within a reasonable budget. We crafted a simple but elaborate story about what we were doing when we went to get it and when we brought it home he was outside. His first words were "You idiots" and then he just stared at it for a while. He says otherwise but I know he was fighting back tears or some sort of unmanly emotions. I told him we could sell it if he didn't want it and he said "Don't be stupid, I got rid of it once and NEVER AGAIN !!"
