Not uncommon. I was chasing a CD cartridge for my Lexus SUV. It got higher than the price from a Lexus dealer and I thought no one could be higher than them for parts.:headscrat

Some people are either mentally retarded or just addicted to ebay or deranged... I don't know.

check out this fruit loop.

There's something weird going on with that auction. Once you get above 150 bucks (about what I would think those are worth...dunno for sure) there's some sort of crazy bidding war between two non-disclosed bidders. I can't see where the money is made in any kind of scam here, but it is strange.

I have been buying stuff on ebay for quite some time. The are a couple of problems with it these days. Number one is the fact that ebay is a competition and ego will enter into it. People will spend more then they originally planned because of ego. They also get addicted to the feeling of a win which will push them to bid again and again. A second major problem is the fact that ebay is now very popular with the general public. I think we can all agree that the general public is populated, largely, by idiots. Another problem which has become more common recently are the sellers who jack up their auction prices by using a second account to place fake bids.

This isn't to say that deals are not to be had. I have been able to pick up some stuff for way less then retail and I almost never had a problem with anything I buy. I find great deals on car parts for my Mustang as well as other things.

Like any other market, ebay is open to the buyer be ware policy of life. Being an informed buyer will keep you from geting bit and over paying.

I just use sniping tool and it automatically bids 5 seconds before end. This way I set exact max amount I will to pay and don't play games with my ego :)

What makes you so sure the bidders are from the US?, ie. maybe their exchange rate makes buying stuff in the US worthwhile even if it is over priced for US markets.

After shipping, taxes and duties that are paided on them I doubt they save money.

Its just some people getting carried away and not doing thier homework before bidding

Ebay nuts come and go. When I started getting stuff it was way to high but worked being careful. For the last year it has been a bargain, it appears the nuts have come out again. For the last couple of months most of what I have watched has gone to at least retail.

While I have to agree, people bidding on e-bay may be crazy, I've found lots of reasons people go higher than what you or I could get it for.

Lots of this is the macho 'nobody out bids me' or the 'didn't do the research' or even the common 'thought it was the next model up' bidding.
However, there are some legitimate reasons for 'over bidding'.

As mentioned before, some countries, such as Canada, put tariffs, surcharges, etc. on 'new' stuff bought from vendors, thus buying used saves 10-80%. I've sold to people on those terms, shipping as used, and having to mark it as such.

Another interesting reason to not buy from retail vendors that I've seen a LOT is no credit card. You can't buy from many new item vendors unless you have a credit card.
Some are now taking paypal, which still is not available to a lot of people
. Most vendors on e-bay take money orders.

As an example, try to buy from Sears on E-bay. Master or Visa only.

So if you don't have those two cards, you pay more from the scratch and ding who take paypal or a money order.

I sold a number of car parts to people who had no paypal, no credit card, etc. They pay with cheap money orders.
So they get it from vendors on e-bay, or they don't get it. Being poor costs more...

Those rotten limeys (and Germans) have made buying Norton/Triumph/BSA parts all but impossible. ;)

The flip side is they make awesome customers/buyers.

As a professional, full-time auctioneer, I can't tell you how many times I have sold something used at auction for more than you can go buy it in a store.

Note: yes, I can talk fast. Yes, I am a real auctioneer (not just someone who sells on eBay and claims to be).

Shill bidding and scam artists have all but ruined EBAY. I rarely bid; can buy new for cheaper in most cases.

Take a look a this one.

Look at the top 3 bidders, previous auctions they've own.

All are from the UK.

maybe they're getting confused in the ebay world, thinking they're bidding in pounds and end up in american ebay buying stuff for the wrong price?

or, it's cheaper to buy it on ebay than from snap-on and have it shipped?

Who knows.

i bought a 3/8" snap-on ratchet for 11 dollars with free shipping on ebay last week. came with craftsman adjustable wrench and a couple other knick knacks

the guy put in the wrong price and listed it as a buy it now, I bought it now. score.

I think it's mostly un-educated consumers that don't know you can buy Snap-On through their website at retail.

There also might be some of the "Snap-On is the best tool available. Snap-On won on E-bay is even better" mentality going on.

What do you think the chances are that this stuff is being sold by a Snap-On route holder that has gotten creative in his marketing and sales technique?

The antics or eBay-bidders are a complete mystery to me; I offer no account for the weird behaviour of my compatriots.

Actually, given the weakness of the dollar right now, Snap-on stuff - at US prices - would be pretty damn cheap over here given the quality; but the prices for most stuff off the SO UK website are more-or-less double - not far off just swapping the dollar sign for a pound sign, which makes it quite expensive. For that kind of money we have other options for much of the stuff, in many cases at least as good and sometimes (in my opinion, I stress) better in areas like ergonomics and with the added bonus (for us) of being European products.

Pity, 'cos there's some nice Snap-on stuff I'd like, that doesn't always have direct equivalents in other brands here - I'd wiilingly pay the US price, but I can't fathom any situation where paying almost twice the US price on eBay (or elsewhere) and then paying shipping is anything but daft...

In 2000 I used to get lots of stuff from ebay for good prices. There were used parts etc. Plus I scored some nice items at the $1 level with actual shipping because sellers hadn;t figured out how to cheat the system yet.

Now whenever I go on ebay it's all "new" stuff, super cheap no-name copy ****, fake stores, $1 price with $60 shipping so they don't have to pay ebay fees, bid over retail prices etc. I hardly ever buy from ebay anymore.

I firmly believe 90% of all overbids are shill bidders with maybe one real bidder being sucked in or no real bidders at all. It's cheap for them to relist and try again.

I also think most any real "'deal" item will be snatched up by OTHER SELLERS who will then relist it so these items just stay in the ebay loop for a while.

With all the scammers selling and buying, it's frustrating to sell anything anymore.

I hear what you are saying, but it seems to me that eBay remains essentially the only way to buy higher quality tools for any kind of decent price. I could probably go to 1000 garage sales before I saw a large set of unused Snap On wrenches (if you want an inkjet printer sans ink, they've got you covered).

Sweet! My first over retail post. I feel like I'm becoming a man.

Ebay

Matco

I will concede that it's not that much over retail, but damn it, it still counts.

In the words of the actor W.C. Fields,
"there's a sucker born every minute, and that's enough to make a decent living"

I wonder if the winning bidders actually pay?

Ebay...Shill bidding at its finest.....

Probably not. It takes a high bidder with a high proxy bid to get that there. Unless both 2 high bids are shill's, which in that case, the seller is losing a lot of money in listing fee's each time he does that. Someone placed a high proxy bid that is way over retail.
