Overhead Garage Storage

What are you guys using for overhead garage storage?

I have vaulted ceilings in a 20x25 garage with a lift. There is room overhead at the garage door that I can try to make something.

JUst looking for options, let me know what you think.

I built some simple shelves with 2x4's, OSB, some joist hangers and wire rope supports in the centers. Not for real heavy storage, but they keep a lot of stuff off the floors and other storage areas. All of our Christmas decorations are up there (and staying there this year, because we're leaving town for the holiday....no point in decorating or putting up a tree LOL).

I'll try to get a pic of them tonight for you. There's a lot of wasted usable space there above the header. Everyone that sees them comments about how good an idea they were. I doubt I have $100 ******* into building them.

I'm considering these, I don't weld so I can't make my own with steel, I could using wood but the ease at which the project could be over and done with when using something like these is appealing.

Speaking of hanging things from a ceiling, are you folks aware of "Sammy-bolts"? They are a threaded receptacle for all-thread rod, with a wood screw attached. You insert the screw into the bottom of a joist or rafter chord, and then the threaded rod screws into that. They also make them with machine screw threads, instead of wood screw threads, for use with beam clamps. Very handy.

Not available in the big box stores around here, but the electrical wholesale houses all stock them.

I was looking at the racks from Costco when they were on sale over the summer. Unfortunately, as I read more on them, they won’t work for me as I’ve got I beams joists and you can’t install them on that type of joist. I like the size of the 4x8 size that were available from Costco, just not for me. I’m still trying to find another way increase my storage options. Good luck!

I ran unistrut across the ceiling using ledger lock screws into each joist to spread the load out. I then hung 3 4x8 sheers If ¾ ply from the unistrut using all thread. It’s extremely strong and gave me a ton of storage in the wasted space above the garage door.

thought about it again today and I dont think the space over the door is going to work. The garage has a lift and if its a large vehicle then the vehicle will not clear the shelving.

Im starting to look into some sort of soffit shelving along the sizes. I would need to attach something to the slanted ceiling....

Always open to ideas or suggestions!

Same here got a good sale deal about 2 years ago on 2 4x8 racks shipped to the house it was like $260, couldn’t pass them up for that price, adjustable to different heights from like 24-48” and rated at 600lbs each. I’m more than happy with mine.

I recently installed a pair of 4' ProRacks at approx 7' high off the ground. These are available in Canada for around $100usd each (equiv) and are rated for 800lbs per 4' length, though that is reduced if you attach multiple racks together sharing a common mounting point.

I am super pleased - they are 28" deep so fit many types of bins and feel sturdy as all hell. They were a little fiddly to install, but now that they are up, I'm going to buy a pair more to finish the wall - they look good, they are sturdy, and it allows me to use space I'd otherwise be wasting.

Highly recommended. I bought mine from Lowes, they are also sold at Home Depot and direct from the manufacturer.

Been casually looking for some overhead storage options (I have 12' ceilings). These look like they would work great. Going to see if there is a US distributor.

Newage and others make racks in a variety of sizes. You can order through Lowe’s and HD. Some would allow longer legs on one side than the other. You could also build your own from wood if you can do decent carpentry. I know you like your garage to look good. You also might be able to build a shed down one side or across the rear of the garage for storage.
