There is a follow somewhat local with a set of oxygen and acetylene tanks said to be full and current.
If I was to buy them and when it comes time to fill them do the welding supply places generally question them and want a receipt or proof of ownership of some sort or would they just exchange it normally.

Him Owing money l take it? His welding supply is probably too far away from mine.
I'm not sure what size tanks these are, I have a baby set like the Lincoln port a torch, my regulators should fit these tanks l hope. Here's what they look like. Or l don't know, maybe these are the baby tanks like the Lincoln port a torch takes. Can you guys tell? He's asking $135.00.
If it is the baby size set, are they still worth it? TBH, l never had my current "baby set" exchanged, so l have no idea of the cost. I guess welding "gas" went up like everything else. 00M0M_22Rod6Dmlsl_1320MM_1200x900.jpg

I would not have anything to do with those tanks. They might be stolen. Both tanks do not have the protective collars. How does possession of stolen property sound to you? There is no deal here.
Oh! do all tanks have the protective collars? llRC my baby set don't have the protective collars either?
Are these the baby tanks? How much do the Baby tanks usually cost to refill/Exchange?

Thanks guys.
Well I have an empty set here if it's only $80 to exchange mine, would it still be worth it to buy these? Do those look like the little baby tank size that he has on craigslist?
What do they call them size wise, are they B tanks if I remember right?

Around here you better have proof of ownership or they'll tell you to buzz off. I think most of the ones that show up here on KIJIJI are "stolen"...... leased tanks that walked off. I bought my tanks in 1981 and always bring my receipt when refilling. Here: no expiry on acetylene tanks, 10 years on 02.

That looks like a "B" plumber tank (40 Cu. Ft.) above. A good match is an 80 Cu. Ft. O2 tank for average use. That is what I have.

I bought this torch set a few years ago off Craigslist I don't have no sort of receipt.
I know I asked the guy where we used to deal when I was working if my tanks were certified when I had them there he acted like he didn't care he said oh well just exchange them.
Someone mentioned Tractor supply can exchange oxygen and acetylene tanks.....
Is that true? Do they all offer the service?

Okay so a B plumber tank is the acetylene size correct?
What size would that little oxygen bottle be that is with that kit in the picture I showed
I just want to know what size tanks I have if I call this place.

My buddy got one of the bigger tanks full, but when it ran out, the shop said they could not refill as the tank belonged to a giant utility company. We have a bunch of navy surplus tanks that don't seem to present any problems though.

The cylinders pictured are a 20 cf/R oxygen and a 20cf/MC acetylene.
Neither ever had threaded necks so don’t use or need caps and both are common customer owned sizes and shouldn’t be an issue to exchange.

I have dealt with a LOT a of cylinder exchanges and have never been asked or shown any type of paperwork proving ownership of a cylinder.

The cylinders you showed look to me to be a 20 cuft oxygen cyl. and an MC acetylene cyl..... IMHO
Same as what I think you are calling the baby set....
That is a good price.... not super great but good....
They would be a good backup set for yours so when you run out you have a reserve to fall back on....

Is the picture you posted the tanks you are thinking of buying? If so show it to what ever welding supply place you are planning to use and see what they have to say about it.

Years ago if you showed up at the local Airgas with any tank that did not show on your lease, and you didn't have ownership papers,
they would 'confiscate' it on the spot, with threat of calling the sheriff if you try to take it. Happened to a buddy way back then with a tank someone gave him. Lately, I returned 2 Argon tanks that were in my shop almost 20 years, that I owned. I swapped them for full ones. Not one word was said about any lease or proof of ownership. Mostly, staff seemed much more concerned with what was going on on their phones than any details of my visit. I did same just recently with a large Oxygen cylinder. Same scenario, different staff.

My answer would be “You want to dial or me?”
Telling me I am in possession of stolen property with no proof is BS!

Proof of ownership by neck ring name is laughable. I commonly see Airgas cylinders with Linde fill tags or local independents with a majors fill tag.

Tractor Supply exchanges them, but the tanks have to be there brand.
Matheson Supply near me quoted about $60.00 plus tax for both. $29.92 and $30.49,
but then he said, right around $75.00 out the door.
Do they charge some sort of Enviromental fee or something?
EDIT:
Just got a call back from the "Airgas Store" in Warwood WV Explained what I had,
Was quoted $44.12 out the door! Pretty good savings! He said the acetylene tank is called M/C and the oxygen was a "20", cubic-feet l guess.
Both stores did not have an issue with paperwork on the tanks. I explained I had gotten the set in ~ 2010 from craigslist. He said real fast "you own those tanks! we take them and give you 2 full ones".
So, l could exchange these tanks about 3 times for the cost of the CL ones. Almost don't pay me to spend $135.00 on the CL ones.
Thanks To All!

I got a K helium bottle on Facebook for $50 with no name on the neck and a K oxygen bottle for free from a guy who had it wash up to his house during a flood that said Union Carbide on it. Airgas took them both no questions asked.

What you are 'seeing' today is probably not what you would have seen 20-30 years ago. I heard of the sheriff actually arresting people back then for trying to bring in stolen tanks. I'll bet the sheriff and the store had an 'agreement' on policy and procedure. If you're bringing in a cylinder you know is not stolen or that you can show proof of ownership, yea, then taunt them all you want.

I'll just piggyback this thread.
Do you think this welder is worth $100.00. Looks pretty clean, said to have the regulator and hose for the Argon. Just for small stuff around my garage. l know it's only 90 Amp max output.
Looks like a score to me! Seems to have some nice features!

Glad the OP got an answer!

Neither side has concrete proof of ownership. I own rental only size cylinders(330cf/T) that were sold by a small independent that sold all of their cylinders. They were bought by a larger independent that only rented that size but in buying the smaller company they also acquired the liability of "rental size" customer owned cylinders.
I'm not saying I want to taunt anyone but I have a real dislike for being considered guilty until proven innocent.....especially by a business I want to spend my money with.

I've bought used tanks at auctions and craigslist/estate sales, also bought brand new tanks from suppliers.

I've never been hassled or questioned even one time about ownership of my tanks and nobody has ever requested documentation of any kind, even when switching tanks and gas suppliers from one to another. They all take each other's tanks without any hassle.

Some people here are afraid of their own shadow, lol.

To the OP, I hope you hear back from the guy and get the tanks soon. Good luck!

Edited to add:
I don't have an exact number in my head, but I'm going to say I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 to 16 compressed gas tanks on hand of various mixes and duplicates/spares, so this isn't something I'm only casually familiar with.

Clearly, those tanks we never equipped with caps and regulations for tanks that size don't require them.

Why on earth would you even make the leap to those tanks being stolen?

I have to think your whole post was just trolling. There's no way it's serious. If so, good job. You got me.

"I heard of the sheriff actually arresting people back then for trying to bring in stolen tanks."

Legally, if you do not know something is stolen, if a law enforcement can prove it is stolen, all they can do is confiscate the stolen property. If you know, for certain, not just guessing/surmising that something is stolen you can be arrested for receiving stolen property.

Sorry l missed your comments. No, He sold it right away. I know it's not a Lincoln or a Hobart, but this
looks like a lot of welder for a beginner, for $350.00. Reviews are good.

Call your suppliers and see what they say on exchanges before you buy. My local guy only exchanges tanks that were bought or leased from him

The reality is, this cylinder issue depends on your area and your suppliers. My local mom/pop shop just sold out to Linde.
I needed a new tank fill last week, i went to the next nearest mom/pop shop (2x the distance) and told him i didn't want to deal with a giant corporation. He knew who i was talking about, i brought him 3 tanks, that i purchased all of, and he swapped em out with NO questions. Not little tanks, we're talking 200-250s. The last 2 big tanks i bought off craigslist or auctions. One was $17. The collar of one was from so long ago there was no google record at all that the company even existed. From 2000 miles away. Just depends on your supplier.
