Found these pliers at a yard sale this weekend. They're made a little different from most pliers, just realized I should have taken a pic from the side to show the somewhat strange construction. Thought they were pretty cool though. have a few P&C sockets hanging around as well. Ignore the Mac wrench I picked up at a different sale, easier to take both pieces in the same pic.

Nice compound pliers 454! Seriously those are the coolest pliers. Seen them before, but had no idea how powerful they were until recently

454, those are compound pliers right? I have 2 pair of them in Proto IIR. Incredible gripping power...
Yep Outlaw, that's the term I couldn't think of. Here's a pic of the back side showing the additional pivot about halfway down the handle.

A good bit of info on P&C in this thread which I find very interesting. I grew up using these tools and not giving much thought to their history or source. I am really not sure how much P&C I have altogether but most of it is on the large side. Here is a pic of my largest P&C socket, a 1" drive 3-1/2" along with two styles of P&C 3/4" drive and a Proto 1" drive ratchet. A high percentage of my 3/4" and 1" drive stuff is P&C and older Proto. Here's a couple of DBE wrenches I recently acquired. The most notable item is the 6-pt wrench, which is the first I have ever encountered.

Anyone else have a 6-pt DBE from P&C?

Brian
Why yes I do:evil: It might have something to do with the fact that I am 20miles from where the factory was :) I picked this one up at the portland swap meet last year I think. I can tell by the logo that is pretty old. I find p&c around here since I live close to where the factory was but this is the only 6pt I have found so far.

Also wanted to show you guys my plvmb and p&c 1/4 drive handles. Both have the inset into the back of the handle to put a 1/4 ratchet onto them. They look identical except for the brand stamp into the handle. Interesting to think about how much different the prices where with the only difference is the small brand letters not even visible unless you know exactly where to look.

Also wanted to show you guys the 3/ 8ths 18" extension I found at the swap meet. I have not seen many wf marked items but I am sure if it could talk it would have some good stories. I enjoy using it :rocker:

I got mine at the Antique Powerland swap meet during the Great Oregon Steam-up the last weekend in July. Good thing there's plenty of P&C to go around for the lot of us - I think we are hitting up some of the same places. I currently live in Independence, but still work in Portland (I grew up in St Johns). I try to hit all the Restore locations in the I-5 and Hwy 99 corridors at least once a week. The only one I avoid is the 103rd & Washington location.

Riley - I probably walked right past you at the steam up! I scored a couple Plomb wrenches that were rusty but cleaned up almost new and a few P&C items as well.

Lately I have acquired some P&C wrenches that look just like the Pre-Pebble Plombs, except they are only polished on the flats of the open end and have the P&C trademark/part number.

I suspect that they were made during WWII and used a painted finish. Does anyone know more about these?

To follow up on my previous post, here are photos of two P&C "Plomb pattern" combo wrenches. Notice that they are unpolished on the body. The numbers are 2726 and 2728. I wonder if Plomb did this during WWII to meet production restrictions or if they moved the dies to P&C when they brought out the Pebble model wrenches?

I need to check my stock. I definitely have some of these, but I never gave much thought to the Plomb design.

Here is a side by side comparison. The Plomb has some casting imperfections, but they are pretty much identical. I'm not sure about the polishing...it seems like these weren't polished at all but they are probably just really old.

Sorry for the huge pics...I'm not sure how to make them smaller.

Most of the Plomb combos I have were highly polished, and any imperfections are the result of rust or abuse. The P&C's of this pattern are similar to your example, and are "as-forged" except for the working surfaces and most of the open end sides are polished.

Interesting, I have a few that I thought were casting flaws but maybe they were pitted. Some of the nicest ones I have were rusty, but just that orange barn rust not the dark red pitting scale. I also noticed that both brands use a similar numbering system where the second two numbers indicate the size in 32nds. Cool! :D

I don't have a photo handy, but has anyone see the long handled version of these? I have a single wrench. They are stamped with the same model numbers with a '-L' stamped at the end.

I wold say I have both those styles among my PLomb, and its a casting style change over time. I think the more rounded lighter ones are newer.

^ those ratchets look like they could have come off the same production line as my Thorsens.

Following up on this post, I just happened to pick up a Thorsen 3/8" drive ratchet last week ($1 at ReStore) so now I have 3/8" and 1/2" Thorsen & P&C ratchets to compare.

Here are the pix:

- P&C model # 3209
- Thorsen model # 77J 4

These are likely not from the same eras. The P&C feels better in the hand and is definitely smoother whereas the Thorsen feels a lot like a cheap import. However, this Thorsen model definitely has more teeth and if not for being worn-out, might be a good ratchet.

I mentioned that I think these are different eras and I will get to that with my next post.

Next up:

- P&C model # 6211
- Thorsen model # 77 (x2)

The interesting thing to note here is that the two Thorsen ratchets are actually quite different. Aside from the location of the stamped model #, one wrench is longer and definitely heavier. Both Thorsen models are pretty stout whereas the P&C has been used as a hammer and isn't very smooth.

The whole point here is merely to compare the makers ratchets. If I understand correctly, Thorsen was born out of a falling-out between P&C and their distributor. That distributor created Thorsen to compete with P&C and likely copied some of P&C's designs.

Nice set! It looks to be the same pattern as shown in the 1953 P&C catalog.

Did you piece it together or get most of it at one time?

The sockets pieces were acquired together. The box (which I'm pretty sure is not P&C), ratchet, extension, and drive handle were acquired separately.

Not being familiar with P&C, I'm thinking that the socket pieces are of later manufacture. Ratchet and extension are earlier and the driver handle may be somewhere in between.

You been hiding that from me?

What do you need to complete it?

Never hiding....can't you see I'm the sharing type..

Not sure what is needed to complete it as I don't have any catalogs for a reference. I'm hoping I can find a minty blue metal P & C labeled 1/4" box, that would be a nice compliment for sure.

Provincial,

Do you have a pic in your catalog with a 1/4" set that you could post?

Twertsy has the 1953 P&C catalog posted on his website:

http://toolarchives.com/node/2035

I have a Proto version of the same spinner handle. It has the steel shank and drive recess as one piece. I think it is a little later. The 1953 spinner has the drive recess separate from the shank, so any torque applied by a 1/4" drive would have to be carried through the plastic handle. That would be a weak point, and I suspect that the solid through shank was adopted to address this problem.

The sets all include the 0211 Sliding T-Handle, the ratchet, various sockets.

Provincial,

Very interesting info on the spinner. Many thanks for the posted link. I feel pretty lucky to find the pieces that I did due to the fact that P&C stuff is purely unobtanium in my area.

A BIG thanks to Twertsy for all his hard work in making these old tool catalogs accessible for all of us.....

stormking,

That breaker bar is one of the first things to catch my eye when I saw the catalog pics....:willy_nil Keeping my fingers crossed...:D

Not much posted on this thread lately, so how apropos that I found this P&C 100 socket set recently. At Goodwill for $7.99. Yes, I said Goodwill.

It's missing a few sockets, but the ratchet is perfect and the original advertising is also in place so I know exactly what is supposed to be there.

This set made my day!
