With the stamped logo and Portland I would say 40s. By 48 the catalogs show a decal on same set, but catalog art can be unreliable.

Well, I dont have very many p&c catalogs but the 1948 catalog I believe has what I was looking for. Box and divider trays (2) are the same. I don't have the inside logo on mine but I wouldn't be surprised if that is just for illustrative purposes. Now I know what style of tools to fill it with. I actually just recently picked up this open gear ratchet and a few other things ....

Stillgottime that little socket coral is easily fabricated.

Yeah, but was it soldered or something? There are 4 small holes. Getting the paint off today in between doing other things. I may have it half-presentable by tomorrow. Is it about the same age as your blue one?

Interesting, yours has the bump for the speed handle- handle while mine doesn't. And yes, some of your tools very well might be correct for that box! Interesting that mine says Portland while yours says Milwaukie -which is the suburb of Portland that the factory was located in...I would imagine the wording would help pin down the age on each box but I don't have enough catalogs to go through to look

I recently added this steel handle half hatchet to the collection.

Screen Shot 2021-06-03 at 10.00.40 AM.jpg

Pairs well with the hatchet I acquired last year.

Now I'm just missing the hickory handle half hatchet. :ROFLMAO:

The speeder is too early for this set but I haven't come across the correct one yet, and I did forget to clean the rust on the top so I need to get on that!

I also have 1/4 and 3/8 sets from that period, but I will take pics of those on another date. They are probably in this thread anyhow.
Nice set there BMW! I like that one handed speeder...not real common and they look really cool. Your box looks like it would clean up really nice!

This P&C 6211 was so grimy I couldn't find a makers mark and left it behind on the first day of the estate sale. It was still there on the 75% off day so I picked it up for 75 cents and found the mark after a good de-greasing.

I'm trying to put a narrower date range to it. According to AA, P&C started using their logo around 1926 and included the circle-R "Registered" symbol sometime after 1953.
Archive.org has a 1935 catalog depicting a 6210 but no mention of a 6211.
They also have a 1958 Shapleigh Hardware catalog that shows a ratchet with the 6211 designation but with an enclosed head that quickly disassembles for cleaning or repair. This one is open and does not disassemble.

Anyone have any insight?

A mate gave me a bag o goodies the other day.
There`s a 1 7/16 3/4 drive socket with a male ratchet plug in it.
Gave it a clean and a rust bath and sure enough there`s a P&C logo on it.

Pulled this case (5295?) yesterday and a couple of tools along with it.

Anyone looking for any of these, let me know... I'm trying to avoid adding another tool brand to the obsession!

Best regards,
John

Were these modified by a user, or did P&C make them this way? I can't really tell, based on the execution. The modification seems well done. It looks like there are numbers (?) before and after the 1278 part number, but I cannot make them out.

I think that's just "mfd." & "u.s.a." before and after the tool#.

Duh. Silly me. Image search proves you're correct. Although, now I'm wondering why the image I pulled up has that extra hole....

I spent some time in the Branson area for a little getaway with the family and hit a couple antique shops in Osage, Mo on the way back. Generally I don’t find much at these places but you never know and I came across a P&C tool display. Im not real familiar with the brand, but I figured I’d show a picture just in case it’s something someone is looking for. It seemed a whole lot of Crazy in regards to pricing and the picture isn’t too great as it was elevated in the booth. Enjoy…

Crusty P&C Rotomat. Pretty beat! If they moved the decimal point one digit to the left, I might be interested.

Edit to add: It is the woodworking tool version. Notice that the outlines in the foreground are wood planes.

So that means two decimal points to the left?

P&C as a mfg of WW tools is news to me. We’re the like so many just private labeling other’s goods, or did they actually make their own?
Guess I need to re-read 1600+ posts now.

Woodworking tools don't show up in the hand tool catalogs, so they must have been marketed separately. The Rotomat era was 1950's to 60's, so that is an indication.

My opinion is that Pendleton may have dabbled in woodworking tools by selling vendor-supplied tools under the P&C brand, rather than the Proto brand. Probably more of an experiment than a serious expansion of product line.

Getting out of my lane here but I've heard woodworking guys say the P&C stuff is Millers Falls. Something to be aware of I guess is that resellers often advertise the tool #"s ( for example 1944, 1943 )as the manufacturing date, though that's way before P&C was selling those types of tools.

Looking at the Deluxe planes A & C planes from BMW's catalog, those do have a Millers Falls look, the split lever cap. You can see it on the leftmost here.

DSC09369-X3.jpg

In their later years, MF started offering cheaper planes, like the 900 seen here, which did not have the split lever cap. These could be the P&C budget planes.

If anyone has a P&C plane, this image shows the lozenges which are another MF giveaway.
