I think it is stupid and have expressed my opinion which puts me in the unenviable (in the corporate world) position of "not being a team player". I also think that it is stupid to spend a day drawing "posters" on flip charts to hang on the wall every time that a management tour comes through our department but the "powers that be" think that it is an essential business tool. I thought that I left that behind me in elementory school.

5S is a business management philosophy taught in every business school in the country. Supposedly it saves money by reducing the time it takes to locate an item, but the time it takes to label everything apparantly doesn't count. It's all about cutting costs to maximize short term profit which is what Wall Street demands.

Well I labeled both of my tool chests and just kept going. I labeled everything but my forehead!! :?)

Did you think about putting the labels in a second language? French, Spanish, German, or one of the more popular Asian languages as well as English. I think that machine supports two line labels?

Next time, consider numbering all the drawers, cabinets, and shelves ... use a convention like D-001, D-002, C-001, C-002, S-001, S-002, etc. Then label all your stuff with the corresponding drawer, cabinet, or shelf that you want the thing to be located in ... then whenever anyone tries to "help you" everything will find its way back to the right place!

You'll also be prepared for when you get old and senile and can't make a decision of where to put things ... unless you've already reached that point. Appears you haven't ... yet!

We mustn't forget the Dymo label maker. The original GT40s used them to label their switches.

Wow! You're right. I had forgotten that. Can you get the Dymo plastic tape anymore? A friend just turned an old Corvette into a potent road racer and used Dymo for all his switches. I hadn't thought about Dymo for a decade or more.

That P-Touch tape is like magic. The sockets for the oil tank heaters on my race car has them labeled with P-Touch. The labels appear impervious to oil (which I spill on them all the time) and the cleaners I use to clean that area with.

Last summer I used P-Touch to mark date of service and reference points (gauge amount of twist over time) on the rear axles (full-floating Ford 9"). They are in a pretty harsh environment of Mobil 1 gear lube. Checked them last week. They are still on tight!

Do you use P-Touch? If not, go to their web site and look at the composition of the multi-layer tape. I think they also have a tape for especially harsh environments.

While short-term profits are often celebrated ... real, sustainable wealth is created by long-term profits which are achieved in part by being the low cost producer of the product or service.

Griots bins

Man, I'd love to have a set of metal organizers like those Griot ones but they are pricey as hell. I keep checking CL for them used, but I never find any. Anyone know a secret source for them that won't break the budget?

I bought those about 17 years ago, Dan. I used cans, bottles, tackle boxes before, obviously from my post, but the bins are really a big improvement. I have to have metric, English, and Whitworth nuts and bolts for my small, motley collection.

I saw some unbranded but identical bins about two years ago; perhaps if you Googled?

I found Dymo tape at a stationery and office supplies shop not too long ago, ****, so I assume they are still available. I bought some reels just in case I get to restore a GT40 one day. Only embossed Dymo labels will do!

That's a good endorsement for P-Touch. i have been using Casio, but in some applications the labels peel off. I'll see if that's available here.

The problem with standard (English) nuts and bolts is that there are so many sizes and at least two thread standards, not to mention grades and AN fasteners. I had to keep my store in a large bin, and here labels are necessary for me.

After years of Folger's coffee cans I went out a few years ago and bought what are essentially the same sized boxes as yours but they're plastic from Frye's Electronics. They work well but they get hazy and a bit yellowed after a few years. I'd really love to have the metal boxes and of course the nice frame for them.

It was a frenzy of organization for about a week afte getting my Hansen organizers.
Also the large socket labels help older eyes see the correct socket quickly.

Are the labels staying on pretty good? I thought of labeling sockets as I've gotten older (eyesight apparently slides, no one told me ... what else do I have to worry about) and I work under the race car with poor light.

That feature already exists on newer models. They plug into your computer via USB and not only have spell check, bar codes and seemingly unlimited printing capabilities! They cost a bit more though.

Mine is a very very very early model, limited capabilities.

I label almost everything in my shop too, even though I am usually the only one using stuff. Every so often my dad will borrow a tool, and it's nice when they go back in the saw spot.
When I worked for my high school's IT dept, someone did in fact label the labelmaker. haha

Man... great thread!

I've got white letters on clear coming in tomorrow. I'll post up some pictures when I label my black CMan boxes. I finally labeled my Lista box. I'll snap up a few pictures of that as well.

Hi Andy,

I have an old PT-11xx, I think, but it uses TZ tape. There's a newer version of tape called TZe and the white letters on clear is model TZe135. I purchased it through Amazon.com.

If you can't find it locally, I would be more than happy to get you however many you want/need and send them over. I wish I could make a trip back home and hand-deliver them to you, but that's not happening in the near future, unfortunately. It would be a great chance to check out your awesome garage!

Admittedly, I could have used the white letters on black background, but the white on clear will be more versatile for my garage stuff, because like you, I like the "OEM" look!

I couldn't find the white-on-clear locally, but was able to buy these on-line. I replaced the red-on-white labels on my fastener cabinets; the new ones look so much better. Your white letters on your black cabinet really looks cool, though.

To the OP.....now you got me thinking. I just moved into new garage and put up a bunch of cabinets, etc., I find myself opening every door/drawer to find where I put things.

...and my tool chest, Ive got the top half labeld but the bottom half is not. ...I need to label the bottom, because just today I opened three drawers to find the hole saw kit that I use once a year

I added a 2nd tool chest to my workshop and rearranged all my tools and decided I wanted to label by drawers. So I hit the internet for premade label kits but didnt see anything that would work for the configuration of my toolchests Then it hit me that a label maker is what I needed So I started researching label makers and found a good deal on a Brother PT2030VP at imagesupply.com for 29.99 it was a newly released product and they had a good special on it, everywhere else I looked it was going from 60 to 149 bucksfor So I bought the ubit with 2 extra 3/4" tapes for 57.50 shipped.I checked today and the price has gone up to 69.99. Well I labeled both of my tool chests and just kept going. I labeled everything but my forehead!! :?)

The Folgers cans are nice but I like these Kraft food service containers, the Sharpie does not do as nice a job as a P-Touch but is way cheaper. :D

Everything is labeled to the point where you can clean out the entire assembly plant and then put everything back based on those labels and foot printing. I hate to see what we spend just to keep that stuff current just on supplies, forget about what it cost to pay us to do it.

Not at that place, we rearrange stuff every few months. It does have it's place but some of the foot printing we do with rolls of tape doesn't last more than about 4 months and it needs to be redone. I will say being around it has made me take up some of the habits though which is good. I almost labeled my tools too, but haven't purchased one these label makers.... yet. I will say the opp did a fine job. Just wait til he goes and marks off on the floor for each box, shelf, and broom rack, then I will call ocd.

white on clear

I have another cabinet that had red-on-white labels, so I replaced these with the new white-on-clear labels. The w-o-c labels weren't available before, and this thread encouraged me finally to get some.

Here are before and after photos. The new labels are less distracting but still quite legible.

Did you buy the Ikea bins when they were 99 cents each? That was a few years ago & as oil prices went up they (Ikea) raised the price a bit.
