So you are saying the old square handles I bought as "lifetime warranty" in the '80s are no longer covered?

Ouch.
Yeah, I wouldn't be too happy about that either. It is bad enough that they can't replace it with the original hard handle. They should at least replace it with an instinct handle.

snapon has never covered handles hard or soft under warranty, the blades do have a lifetime warranty, under some cases where the handle failed due to defective materials, then they do get replaced....

I had some old hard handle style screwdrivers; the handles literally crumbled into pieces and have a weird strong smell to them. Are these the old generation handles that were defective that you are referring to?

I thought you said the instincts were covered though.

Snap-On is crazy if they think they can sell a tool that has half a warranty. "You can break this end, but not that end."

Thats exactly the handle issue/vintage I'm talking about; they shrivel up, crack, die and disintegrate! They get really brittle and break apart; they have a strong smell too! My dealer wouldn't warranty mine; I had to buy a new handle....

The handle looks to have a definite crack to me. If there was no evidence of abuse, why shouldn't it be replaced? That definitely looks like the plastic aged and failed. It almost looks to be swelling.

The instinct handles (on the screwdrivers) are replaceable; the old black Tenite handles are not. Same goes for the new soft grip ratchets vs. the older ratchets with Tenite handles.

My dealer smiles as he warranties stuff, even stuff thats older than I am. He has been a snap on dealer for over 14 years, and his truck is stocked to the gills, I dont think he's worried about warranties tying up his tool purchasing money, he obviousely has no problem keeping his truck VERY well stocked, and VERY well organised. He always has a very nice tool box (or very often 2) on the truck, and he always sells them quickly and has a new one to show/sell.

Regardless, these are going to be hard times for tool dealers. The luxury of having truck tools and credit will have to be put aside for many of the younger techs so they can pay their bills and feed their kids.

Pedro, another question! Everyone has been debating about Snapon not putting "USA" on the newer dual 80 ratchets; are they made in USA, including the internals guts? Why did they remove this; historically Snapon usually imprinted this on their tools! Someone was saying the bodies were but the guts were global components! Any info appreciated!

Why are the old handles "not replaceable"? Replacing a handle seems to be the same as replacing a blade.

Re: Paging Pedro-snap on !!

My old SO dealer would warranty just about anything for me. Many time, if it was a tool that I didn't need often, I would give it to him to send in for credit, and once he got the credit, he would order me a new tool. Will Snap On warranty a tool that has worn chrome and some flaking chrome? I got a chrome sliver in my finger once, and after that, I don't use any tool that has flaking chrome, it is either warrantied or left in the bottom drawer. One thing that I have always wondered.... If Snap On doesn't give the dealer credit for the tool, do they return the broken tool to you to bring back to the customer? One is a 1 9/16" OEX-50 and the other is a 2" OEX-64.

This may sound lame but after my dealer refused to warranty my flaking chrome off a ratchet; I sanded it down so they flakes wouldn't cut me anymore! I figured, "oh, well", I still wanted to use the tool without getting cut!

I'de warranty the crumbled ones, but thats up to the dealer if he/she wants to or not... those are a hit or miss if they get charged back to us.

I don't really care about doing any warranty, to me its just part of the job.

as far as the s80 i have no idea if the ratchet as a whole are made in the us or not

as long as there is no rust flaking chrome is warranty.

when we send in our warranties they go through them, and what ever isnt warranty they ship it back to us, what the dealer does is the dealer's problem

Re: Paging Pedro-snap on !!

When the chrome flakes off, the metal underneath starts to rust. If I clean these wrenches with one of the new rust removing compounds that doesn't harm the metal or chrome, would they then be warranty-able? If you could warranty them for me, I will pay shipping both ways, and kick in some money for the favor. thanks Junk..

You guys should start another thread about warranty issues rather than hound Pedro; I just wanted Pedro to post some pictures.

I emailed Snap-on corporate and asked them to send us a representative, but still no answer.

as long as there isn't any rust on it i can warranty it, even if you take a wire brush to it and some oil i can warranty it..

so yes i can and will do the warranty .. just pay shipping

If you don't mind meeting me somewhere i'll exchange your stuff.

we get warranty net cost refunded to us on our tool bills, dealers hate warranty because it ties up inventory money.

if a tool is obvious abuse then they ship them back to us and we eat the cost.

pre-instinct handles are not warranty, instinct handles are warranty, alot of dealers do not know that.

flaking chrome is warranty as long as its not due to abuse (taking a hammer to it, or impact to a socket)

repairs pricing changes from time to time so for your best bet give the snapon repair center a call (888) 762 7972, and ask for the flat rate... add about 5-10$ to it for shipping costs.

blue point stuff is a hit or miss when it comes to warranty ... screwdriver bits do not have warranty but wrenches, picks, screwdrivers, ect ect do

if the strippers that you are talking about are the pwc22 ( think thats the part number) they do have warrant... any other questions?

There's your answer folks... pedro just put to rest about 50 different Garage Journal threads. :lol_hitti

Pedro.... nice to meet ya. You truck looks familiar. A lot like the one that I give money to around here

yeah what's the deal. Any insider info?

From my research, manufacturers are reluctant to discuss origin information.

The Federal Trade Commission, which is tasked with investigating such issues, doesn't seem to care either.

gott hold that C-man trade in stuff somehow!

Honestly, When I was a tech I would get on the truck & some distributors just threw the trash on the floor & said they would clean it up when they got home. That's not for me. I'm not a neat freak but I can't live like that.

Thanks Pedro for taking time to participate in this board. You have helped guys like me who have to track down the local Snapon guy to buy things understand what they deal with. I seem to be dealing with a very good guy. I have only spent a couple hundred dollars with him but each time I see him he asks how I like what I bought last time. In my opinion that speaks volumes about his customer service. If its not too much trouble how about a picture of the outside of your truck Thanks again

Pedro, Thanks for answering are questions. My question is can we without a recipe, return for warranty tools direct to SO? I have a ratchet with stripped gears that needs to be rebuilt. I would like to just send in the gear set. Is that possible?

Are you willing to mail tools to members if payed with a credit card?

Thanks,

Rod
