It will depend on the texture. Bear in mind that if you get the texture very wet, it will come off on the roller.
yes, it very likely has asbestos. unbeknownst to me that it had asbestos, I have scraped & sanded tons of it , mostly for repairs from water leaks . so far my lungs are good.
With lots of water, the risk of dust is pretty low. But it makes an awful mess.
yes, but I was sanding it with a power sander so we could blend the patch into the existing . always used a mask but not asbestos rated nor any other asbestos procedures .

Definitely. When I removed ours, one area had been painted and it was a lot harder to get off.
Just wait until you try to sell that house. Those ceilings will seriously devalue the house and you may end up paying to have it professionally removed at big bucks price. Much smarter to deal with it yourself while you still can.

Built in '83 and what I have read asbestos was banned in in the finish by 1980 here because our state followed Federal standards but it's worth a look.
I doubt it has any effect here for the age of our house.
That removal picture looks involved. Seems it must have needed quite a bit of repair.Misted and scraped the popcorn ceiling in 5 rooms, a hallway, and a foyer in our house. The worst ones were the ones that had been painted. Did not like the mudding & sanding but there are worse things in life...
So, if it's dampened does the sprayed on finish easily scrape off?No. The paint will bridge between individual pieces and to the ceiling as well. I've painted many ceilings, little pieces will come off on the roller, land in your hair/on your shirt/on the floor, but most will roll right back on... The texture will change - for better or worse is an individual opinion.
For the record, I've also applied popcorn along with the sparkly bits! It's a fun look when brand new.

Yes, very much so. Painted popcorn won't absorb water as quickly and would be a bigger PIA.

Skim coating is pretty easy. 12 or 14" knives may fast work of it.
This one was tougher than most of the other rooms. It was painted by someone before we owned it and I don't know why that section was so much harder to remove but it eventually came off. For "dry" (unpainted) popcorn, usually a light mist, wait a minute or so and it slides off easily. Not too much water or the scraping knife will gouge the drywall.
You really should be good. I'd probably not bother testing, but not saying you shouldn't.
I tried one of those for my project and found it cumbersome. The knife edge caught a lot.Once you paint it the easy removal method of spraying it with warm water, then scraping it off goes away. Here is the tool I used to remove flaking and falling “popcorn” ceiling in my mother-in-laws garage. People who dislike wetting then scraping are attempting to wet and scrape previously painted popcorn ceilings. Then it is very difficult!
I used a store sized plastic bag to catch the softened mudd. It then doesn’t get so heavy as you are scraping. Just tip it over a garbage can while holding the bag bottom to empty after scraping about 10 ft. Put a short stick in the end of the scraper so you are using both hands and arms.
Is it easy? It was not too bad. A two car garage took around six hours. Two, three hour sessions, including follow up patching of gouges, holes.
How easy is it for you to roller two coats of paint onto a ceiling? The reason I say two, is I suggest “primer for fresh drywall” for your first coat (cheaper than paint too). Then your flat ceiling paint. Pink until it dries. This is your painting sequence if you decide to scrape it off too.
