This is a fine example of a Parker, so I'm going to pull out all the stops to make this stand.
Here are a plan & elevation sketch and a couple pics of the vise, freshly boiled and oiled.

Royce: instead of all these threads i'd vote for you to have them all in just one and you might get a lot more members eyes (popping i'd say) if you started a thread in garage gallery that would have all the stuff you do in you garage/shop and around the house like a few other threads over there have. some of those threads have a few million views and i'm betting yours would be very popular.

in any case i'll find your projects maybe wherever you post them and enjoy them just as much.

take care and looking forward to the Parker's stand. i had the 956 that is a 6 inch Parker without the swivel base and it was a beast.

good luck

Tarbell: he did build that bowling alley bench and not many if any of us really know what the creative juices are flowing in Royce's mind. do we? i'm guessing metal he's going to cut up from scraps laying around the shop or out in his yard, but i'm here to watch and be amazed. AGAIN.

Drives,
Like most of the projects, the design is geared around the materials at hand.

Humm, I wonder how many of his neighbors cars are still intact. :dunno:

LX,
I'll have you know I steer clear of the neighbors cars unless I'm in a 9 line bind!!!

Got some iron cut up for the base and column today.

That front piece that holds the thread in on your Parker , it looks like it's brass, is that custom made? I'd like to see a closer look. Parkers are my favorate. I have the 956 and 976. BCD.

BCD: the parker holder is made of Bronze and yours should have them to unless you have the older cast iron steel ones. i'm not a Parker vise historian because even though they are great vises they don't appeal to me as much as a few other brands so not sure how many have the bronze holders or when they started using them so maybe post your vises over on the main vise thread and ask the question. i know one member in Canada made a Parker holder for his broken cast one out of brass, but brass is maybe a little too soft for everyday use especially on the BIG UNS.

Royce: I'd love to be your neighbor, but my wife won't move within a throw of the NORTH POLE.

your steel is starting to take shape and did you happen to take a few pictures of the pile of steel you are using before you put your skills at cutting them up and welding your AWESOME project together? also you seem to always work with steel and you are welding and you seem to have all your benches (or most of them) made of wood. is that the artistic part of you that needs to have some color in the shop to make you tick?

cheers and hope you are enjoying your weekend too.

Sorry, no pics of the materials.
My shop is primarily for building wooden boats, although I've yet to build one in it.
The welding is secondary, but very necessary to me.
I have more than a few steel tables, just no room just now, to set them up.
Thanks

Wow Royce
That is a fine stand for the vice
Do I see 3 different thicknesses of plate for the base ?
How did you get the corners turned in is that sliced pipe welded to strap?

Thanks,
The first two courses are angle iron with a 1/4 section of 3" pipe concave out, nested into the angle iron.
The 3rd course is another 1/4 section of 3" pipe convex out.
The column is blind welded to a 1/2" plate.
Thank you

Royce: for some of us that don't know how you BLIND WELDED the column to the cool stand would you might telling us how you even did that? i know you did it for the look you wanted, but wouldn't it have been a lot easier to weld it on the base on the outside?

WELL DONE AGAIN!!

is the finish going to be your magic BLO WAX for the naked look or are you going to paint this one?

Aesthetically, I'm all for it. It's really beautiful and I really admire how you are able to create these cool shapes from stock pieces. The cutting accuracy alone blows my mind.

Practically, I can't see it being ergonomic. Trying to stand and work on anything clamped in the vice is going to be a clumsy.

Drives,
I cut a window in the bottom plate and welded it from the inside.

This design has no room for easy!!!!

I'm still thinking about how to finish it.
Thank you

I see my worries where warranted. All the work and the damn thing ended up crooked. :D

Thanks Jim,
There is nothing practical about this stand, but with the column canted, I think there is more toe space than the pics seem to show.

Royce: besides having awesome skills and great imagination i thought you were a magician too. :dunno:

great idea to hide the welds and also take a little weight out of the stand. i bet that will weigh close to 220 pounds with that 150+ Parker on top of it. still watching and admiring and enjoying every minute. thanks

speaking of practical do you have a place to set it or are you going to put casters under this one?

LX: :D

Drives,
The only two things I can make disappear are time and money!
No, I don't have a place to put this, but I'm working on that issue.
I don't think casters on a vise would work for me.
Thanks

That badass thing should be red with a pair of white racing stripes. :)

Like the ford GT40 of the vise world!
