Royce, another fine creation. You just whip them out. Did you use a CNC type plasma cutter to cut the top plate? I know how I would do it but I own a couple CNC's. Great job and keep up the great work.

Thanks KM,
No CNC, just a prehistoric hand torch!

Royce: when you took the jaws off your parker were the pins relatively easy or fairly hard to remove? are they knurled? your vise looks practically new condition and guessing it's maybe 80 years old. WELL DONE!!

so i'm just throwing out these vise stands with wheels to give you a few ideas because if you don't have a permanent spot for your AWESOME STANDS something like this might help you move them around so you can save your muscles for building more of them. i'm sure if you do make some sort of caster mount for your stands it might need to be patented.

cheers

as you might know i like your BLO VISES the best, but have you seen the SNAP ON green and orange vises posted over on the vise thread? just saying if i painted a vise one of those bright colors might be one that i'd pick.

Drives,
The pins can out out nice, no blood or nothing.
They are not knurled.

Some day I may put wheels under one.

I kind of like the wild colors you mentioned.

Thanks

Nah, let"s go with burgundy/plum or whatever you call this.

Royce

GJ'r Fretters may just want to marry you. He uses the same color on all sorts of stuff. I would have a hard time doing what you did with wood, let alone steel. Very nice.

I'm not sure the MRS would sit still for that!

Got the striping done today, so I guess it's done.
Thanks

That is one great looking vise stand Royce. A fitting perch for a fine old vise. I like the way the lines of the vise base carry down through the stand and I think the pin stripes really help highlight those fine lines. Great job on this one. Ed.

Thank you Ed,
That was my first try at pin striping, so don't look to close,it's a little rough.

Royce: another amazing from your head to reality in very quick time frame. if i was to paint it a color and didn't pick those florescent Snap on colors i suppose i'd do it that Burgundy color because another member (Fretters) from England paints almost all his vises that color and it's growing on me.

it's really hard to improve on anything you do because you even pin striped the top of the bolts, but i'd possibly take all the paint of the bronze retainer to give the handle a little more pop. i might also shine up the jaws maybe close to what Bagged did on his Parker he posted on the vise thread a few days ago because your jaws almost have an aluminum look to them. it's great as is don't get me wrong and that stand you built is a masterpiece.

i also think i saw on another thread you have that you also poured cement to extend your shop maybe before winter sets in. i have a few more pictures on my GET HEALTHY THREAD in free parking in case you might want a few more ideas now that your weather is starting to get pretty cold.

WELL DONE SIR!! and keep up the great thinking and work.

just an FYI since you like cool stuff one of the shops in our area was selling a guy's cool looking wood tables and if anybody can make something cool i figured you could so here's something to do if you want to make something out of wood instead of steel.

cheers

If he did that he would have to put it in a room with doily wallpaper and thick white berber carpet.

Nice work Royce, love the pinstripe detail on the bolts!

LX,
That reminds me of the movie Josey Wales, when Clint Eastwood asked the old indian if he had any food and he said only a piece of hard rock candy, but it wasn't for eating, just looking through.

Thank you

Thanks tar,
Is there a way we can change the carpet color to used grease?

Royce, what thickness/gauge steel still you use for all the pieces? Any idea how much just the base section weighed before you welded the post section on?

Bagged,
3/8"x2" angle, 3"sch 40 pipe and 1/2" plate on the base.
1/4" plate and 3" sch 40 pipe on the column.
3/4" plate on the top.
I'd guess between 75# and 100#
Have fun and I hope to see the design and process.

Thanks for the info Royce. I have to make time to get out to my local steel yard which has a bargain barn. I have a vision of how I am going to make the column, but I not going to hijack your thread.

I forgot to ask, how many degrees is the column tilted?

Keeping in mind the side plates taper 2" in 22", 8 degrees centerline.
I feel that could budge to 10 or 12 degrees without any adverse effects and maybe even some benefit in more toe space.
A couple other dimensions that may help gauge things are;
The base is 25-1/2" square
The side plates on the column are 6" wide on the bottom and 4" wide on the top.
Hollar if there is anything else I can measure or help with.

Hey guys, I'm new to the page. I've got a 976 on my bench. I bought the bench with the vice on it for $100 about 5 years ago. I use this vice on a regular basis. I never thought much of it until tonight. I was sitting in my shop enjoying a cheap cigar and happend to look over at the vice and noticed name. I would like any info you guys could send my way. After seeing some of these pictures, I may have to clean mine up, but leave it in useable condition. It is in very good condition with no welds or repairs. Please pardon the mess.

Welcome Thunder,
Great vise you got there.
What I do to clean mine is put in a half barrel and boil them.
Then just hand brush to remove rust and paint.
Boiling is a great way to strip paint as it really softens it without chemicals or power brushes.
Boiling, also turns the rust to a dark oxide that finishes nicely.
Then slop some oil on them if paint is not desired.
Any oil works, motor, drain, atf, mineral, linseed, tung.
Wipe off the excess and put the weed burner to it and bring up to 200 to 300 degrees to help set the finish.
I don't see the mess you referred to, but I'm blind to clutter!
