In the market for a pass through ratchet, both 1/4 and 3/8. For the ones that own one, what did you end up going with? Thanks!

I just have the Harbor Freight 3/8 set. I got it to keep with my camper tool set but it's come in handy a few times in the shop. I haven't used any other brand to compare but this one has worked fine without any issues.

All three drive sizes, and two serpentine belt tools (flex vs nonflex head). They are not daily use tools though. Biggest issue is not easy to use a torque wrench

I have the Gearwrench. This was something I thought I'd use a few times a year, but I've had it 5+ years and only used it once, and I could've gotten by without it. Still, it's nice and does work well if you're convinced you want one.

Edit- I think it was $50-60 when I bought it, maybe on a price drop on Amazon.

Can I jump in and ask a semi-off-topic question?

I, too, have been thinking about a pass-through set. I don't typically buy "cheap tools", but I'm also not in the mood for Snap-On, etc., as I'm not making my living with these. As such, the HF set for $25 caught my eye.

Here's my question: the socket end that goes into the wrench...i.e. the "drive end": is that a standard dimension? In other words, if I buy the HF set and decide to get a better ratchet down the line, will it be compatible with the HF sockets?

Thanks!

They all work, however, they don't get much use now as I am working on other types of projects.

Yes, the "drive end" is a standard 3/4" (19mm) hex, and the spring ball retention mechanism for each socket is part of the socket itself, so no special ratchet or wrench is necessary. HF pass through sockets can be popped into any 3/4" (19mm) combination wrench or ratchet wrench you likely already have. I attach my HF pass through sockets to a Williams 19mm reversible flex head ratcheting box wrench most of the time.

Bought mine at a garage sale 5 years or so ago, and it's been super useful on a handful of occasions. I keep it in the truck as it's a small kit that can do a lot.
It's a Craftsman 80px Max Axess Socket Set that has 1/4" and 3/8" pass-through sockets. The two extensions also double as pass-thru shafts for the screwdriver handle, and it has a set of hex and torx bits that fit them too.

Agree if you are indeed going to get both sizes, GearWrench is probably your best bet in today's market.

They no longer list 1/2 inch drive: https://www.paperturn-view.com/us/apex-tool-group-naht/gw-catalog-book?pid=NjY66929&p=203&v=9.50

Bought a Gear Wrench set on sale at Sears some years back, figured I had to have it. It's been in the tool chest ever since, never having seen the light of day, but of the day ever comes, I've got them.

I have the Gearwrench flex head sets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive.

Main uses are super low profile ratchet, sure ratcheting box wrenches can work but this has a longer more comfy handle and behaves like a regular socket wrench. And the other use is when you have those nuts over studs with a hex in the end (think end links or strut mounts), you can pass a bit socket up the middle and still get a good grip on the thing.

I have the Harbor Freight 3/8 go thru socket set. I don't use it very often, but it comes in handy sometimes. I can't justify a more expensive set for my needs.

I have the Duralast, which is the same as the crescent, and is compatible with gear wrench pass through sockets. It's been a lifesaver when I actually needed it. If you are looking for a pass through socket set, and don't mind not being able to use the sockets with a regular ratchet, or a wrench, go with the gear wrench 1/4 & 3/8 set.
