Can I jump in and ask a semi-off-topic question?
Here's my question: the socket end that goes into the wrench...i.e. the "drive end": is that a standard dimension? In other words, if I buy the HF set and decide to get a better ratchet down the line, will it be compatible with the HF sockets?
Thanks!

Thanks. So that's a "no"!
Which Pass Thru/Go Through Sockets/Ratchets Swap/Interchange?
Added 12 Aug 24: The main point of this thread is if you need to replace/add something and you cannot get it from the brand you have, you might find it under another brand. Also there might be NOS on Ebay or Cripe Distributing. An example: last year I needed to replace Craftsman (Sears) 3/8...www.garagejournal.com

Yes, the "drive end" is a standard 3/4" (19mm) hex, and the spring ball retention mechanism for each socket is part of the socket itself, so no special ratchet or wrench is necessary. HF pass through sockets can be popped into any 3/4" (19mm) combination wrench or ratchet wrench you likely already have. I attach my HF pass through sockets to a Williams 19mm reversible flex head ratcheting box wrench most of the time. Can I jump in and ask a semi-off-topic question?
I, too, have been thinking about a pass-through set. I don't typically buy "cheap tools", but I'm also not in the mood for Snap-On, etc., as I'm not making my living with these. As such, the HF set for $25 caught my eye.

In the market for a pass through ratchet, both 1/4 and 3/8. For the ones that own one, what did you end up going with? Thanks!
Agree if you are indeed going to get both sizes, GearWrench is probably your best bet in today's market.GearWrench
All three drive sizes, and two serpentine belt tools (flex vs nonflex head). They are not daily use tools though. Biggest issue is not easy to use a torque wrench
Not necessarily. You have to pick another brand that uses the same drive style and size.Thanks. So that's a "no"!![]()
