The guy grading the yard got too close to the building and hit the corner of the brand new LP smartside. They said they would cover the cost of the siding contractor fixing it but they siding contractor says they are booked up for 2 months and estimated $600. Thinking about putting some glue in the crack and nailing it back in position. Then using some filler to repair the end. It's been pretty dry here and could get it done before we have some rain here in a couple days.

At least it is on the back corner that is not that visible. And, yes, the foundation guy had old wooden forms that were coming apart. This corner is much worse than anywhere else.

Would this be suitable for filler?

Is that just the end trim? 1x3 or something? if so, you could consider cutting above the crack and patch in a new piece, using bondo to smooth it out. $600 seems high for that, unless i'm missing something.

LP Smartside is just the new name for fiberboard/masonite siding. It's good quality (better than the stuff that had lawsuits), just make sure you paint the cut ends of the existing and new pieces before you install. And caulk any nail holes flush. At least that's what we've always done at our house. 5 years between paint jobs and the last time we had work done, only the bottom course of siding needed attention.

It's a preformed corner piece that has nail flanges under the lap siding. And I paid extra for single pieces that go the whole 14' height. The other corner board didn't crack but has some damage at the bottom. The $600 seems excessive to me too - I don't think they want to do it. They have plenty of whole buildings to keep them busy. $500 was to replace the whole corner which involves cutting the caulking out clear to the top on both sides, pulling the pieces and replacing and caulking.

If I was to cut I think I would be just as well off to put some glue or caulk in the crack and push it back in place and nail as either way I have a joint. I would need to fill the bottom to make it look undamaged. I could just paint it to seal it but the uneven surface would be obvious.

Excavation contractor said the grading sub (used because he has a bobcat pulverizer) said he didn't want to be responsible for it and will just deduct it from my bill but I don't have the bill yet. He has been very reasonable on billing for other things but he could adjust the bill to cover it. It's actually a subcontractor of the excavator - the excavator is a very good operator who got through areas with multiple pipes and wires and did amazingly well at avoiding damage. The surface grading guy wasn't as good obviously. Was told if I wanted to do it myself just give them a price. Not sure what I should set my hourly labor price at. I figure a couple hours would probably be enough to do it.

This is one of those things that I would like to have someone else do because I have plenty of other things to do but will probably get a better job doing it myself. And by the time I find someone to do it and explain everything I will probably have half the time invested that it takes to do it myself.

Just a thought. It seems A. You were real appreciative of the quality of work the sub did otherwise and B. The sub owned up to his mistake and wanted to make it right.

Maybe trying to charge your labor could be forgiven? Buy the corner piece, some paint, and a tube of quad. Give that receipt to the contractor and mentioned don’t worry about the labor. Some day when you need something in a hurry that contractor might move you to the top of the list.

Two different contractors - the excavator and his sub that had the equipment to smooth out the ground. The excavator did a good job. The sub not so much. Hit a sewer cleanout that was sticking up two feet so clearly visible. Broke the fitting in the main line. They fixed that and it's buried so not a cosmetic item. Got into gravel and ended up stirring that into the dirt and getting a little everywhere in the yard - that's the least of my worries as the grass will hide all but the larger base rock. Skinned up a couple trees real bad. They were close to the building so things were tight there but expected him to just cover the parts he could get to. Will probably end up taking down the trees in the next year.

Crazy thing is the excavator is a good operator and a reasonable business man, easy to work with. But his sub and his leads for other contractors has been really poor.

Sorry never mind then. I misunderstood

I accidentally hit my lp smartside trim with my mower last summer. Filled in the gash in with some exterior grade spackle, sanded it, hit it with some touch paint - good as new.
