Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

Just checking in while I have some free time with the holidays and looking at those first pics it's not *much* better but at this phase of life taking baby steps with things seems appropriate. Kids are getting old and big quick and their mess seems to be spreading. I really need an out building (for myself or them!) but in the meantime I'll keep chipping.

I just bought a Louisville Everest attic ladder to gain access to the space above the garage. Luckily it's all stick framed so the retrofit shouldn't be too hard. Once I can easily get up there some insulation and adding some rough electrical for 10 T8 lights with LED retrofit kits will be added before I toss a floor up. Getting some of the xmas stuff up there instead of the basement and shed will help with things a bit.

Building a few motors for folks over the winter so even more down on space than normal. I am still browsing some pallet racking to go over the bench on the LH side where those flimsy shelves are, but nothing has come up close enough yet.

In any case, Happy Holidays to all (be it Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, Saturnalia, whatever...) and have a happily exciting New Year!

Still haven’t put the ladder in or the lights up and its raceprep time! One pass down and lots to go.

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

Well small “upgrade” complete. Ended up using the led tube lights in my electronics shop in the house and wanted an easy solution for a stop gap in the attached garage.

Enter “corncob” adjustable led floods.

https://www.greenelectricalsupply.com/30-watt-adjustable-beam-angle-led-retrofit-e26-base-5000k.aspx

Screws right into a std light base and they light up my whole space very well. Spendy but installed in under 10min (counting wrestling my ladder out)

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

Garage is staying somewhat organized but badly need more room. Been storing my race car in my new-to-me enclosed trailer. It helps but not enough. Need more pennies saved for a detached space.

Have had a good race season so far. Broke some things, fixed some things, new best et in the car. One more event to go in our points series then I wait for better weather.

Broke the car on the dyno and had to kick the daily out. This space is minimally "good enough" when needed. Barely.

Sad to see you have broke it again , glad the snow is not going to be in you neck of the woods. NY and VT and parts of upper Pa are getting snow now, how is the progress at getting a dedicated shop for Corrado?

Guy down the road from me has three, i snicker but then again he probably snickers as he drives by my E30's in yard.

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

Well it seems like building is always "next year" on a pretty regular basis. Shwmbo likes minimal debt so gonna have to pad the savings a bit before pulling the trigger. I have a better idea of what I want now that a few other locals have built near me. Here's hoping it works out.

As far as the car, it is what it is. Pushing a bone stock engine to 8k may not be the smartest but thats how I roll. Seems to work until it doesn't.

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

Progress, at least some changes towards progress?

I bought attic stairs last year, maybe before, whatever. I struggled on how to install it with the 11' ceiling height a few ladders and just me.

Browsing marketplace got dangerous and I found some pallet racking for a decent price. Figured I could use it as scaffolding then use them for storage. Well, seems like at least the scaffolding idea worked.

bbee70b5d01590e1b173c40d255ddb6d.jpg

Got my ceiling cut up a bit and this gem of a space hiding. d11fa8cd8c6f1f850e40afac69cb2092.jpg

The joists are 2x12 and seem quite sturdy. Other than some lazy (and maybe not code) wires in my way the rest should go well. Going to just add some more bracing and insulation after adding some more lights and get some ply down. An extra ~400sqft is killer.

Making progress

51be68a2fbc6dfbac2dab93e933eeac7.jpg

Getting the joist cut flush with the ceiling took a circular saw a sawzall and a hacksaw but its done. Got the rough framing done but no pic yet. Even with the scaffold I am hurting from climbing in/out. Having gotten this far I am glad I didn't attempt this with a ladder.

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

I still didn't take pics of the framing but it looks like framing.

But I did manage to get it installed in the ceiling by myself. The temporary supports held it in well. Had to do some tweaking to get it square. Not fun but possible to do alone.

Still have to trim the legs, figure out trim and find something fire rated (thin sheetrock?) to cover.

Acoustic Ceiling Tiles are fire rated and lightweight. You could easily glue them to the stairs and even double them up.

Thank you for that idea, I will check it out.

Another thought I had was frame out a 2x trapdoor for the top and rock the bottom of it. I could add insulation to the back of it which would be a bonus longer term.

Set them so that I could walk under. Will add additional lighting if needed. Two more to go for the front wall.

Nice Corrado and impressive numbers! I've owned almost a dozen of them over the years. I always loved the sound of a vr6! Love seeing all the vw guys on here too.

Thanks! I was looking for an slc in 99 but bought a mk2 that was swapped and then dozens of other vws. This is our second Corrado, the first being a 91 g60 that my wife mostly drove. Still looking for another for more of a driver to enjoy.

Got the last racks up today. Still lots of organizing to do.

I think both welders will still fit to the right of the bench.

Re: Paul_VR6's Cramped Double "and" Big Single Shop Thread

More updates. Got a high lift kit from ddm garage doors and a liftmaster 8500w. Finally got it all in

f85080ceb50ed3a0a88ad8178f8a8c32.jpg

Probably could have gotten another 2" out of it but such is life. Winding the springs was a bit harrowing (and tiring!) and I can see why there were more safety warnings on the ddm site than with any other product I have purchased.

Now I can close the garage from my phone lock the kids out whenever I want.

Still need to oil springs and install an outlet for the opener. Easy last bits though.

Next up Atlas 8000ext 4 post lift (I think)

Me too but disliked the F/R weight distribution and mine was a 89 G60, sold it after a year. Was a fun cruiser but sluggish compared to an SLC with upgrades.

Well been doing this instead of racing. Broke a diff cup at our only race on the first hit and parked it. Trailer is almost empty of building materials, finally.

True. By the time I finish it will be time to stop using it! Permits took longer than anticipated due to some changes in our permeable surface amounts and had to prove we needed no additional mitigation as all the house drains go to a dry well and then had to go find it because it wasn't in the town records only county [emoji28] Broke ground Sep 11 on the new footers and working mostly alone with a hand from one of the kids or the mrs when needed.

Like many projects, I am sick of this thing. One rail in the am and can get final inspection next week. Sill need to do the trim but may wait till spring.
