Pegboard and loose hooks

I have always used cheap pegboards with 1/8" holes to organize wrenches sockets, screwdrivers, nut drivers etc. Now I am building a new home and want a more professional look. I just bought a couple metal pegboards with both slots and 1/4" inch holes. The large holes were a surprise because all my pegs (about 200) are 1/8".

I could return the boards for new ones with 1/8" inch holes (expensive return shipping), or bite the bullet and buy all new hooks (very expensive).

Can I somehow stabilize the small pegs in the large holes without it looking cheesy?

All solution ideas welcome

I am thinking about getting some vinyl tubing that is 1/8" ID and 1/4" OD. I could cut off a couple pieces for the top and center of the small hooks. They should fit snugly into the 1/4" holes.

Along this line, how about a couple layers of shrink tubing?

the tubing with a piece of heat shrink over the top to secure it would probably work well

Once you decide the placement of pegs (and it looks to be somewhat permanent), you can consider doing what I did: I replaced all of the 1/4" pegs with 1/4" bolts. I used varying lengths depending on what I wanted to hang. Each bolt uses two nuts, one on each side of the pegboard. The "pegs" are strong and rigid, and I don't need to worry about them being loose.

Today I bought some Plasti-dip liquid. I'm going to try dipping the hooks I already have to get a larger and rubberized portions where they enter the pegboard. This should work well because there was a rubberized tip on some of the hooks. I put one of those on the part that goes in the 1/4" holes and it made for a snug and stable fit. I'll let you know how the plasti-dip works.

It will probably take at least two dips or coats on the hooks to build up the thickness enough on the smaller diameter hooks.

I think we may be over-complicating things. Get those black plastic clips that bridge the hook and snap into the two adjacent holes. I have all 1/8 inch hooks and 1/4 inch holes and those simple clips keep the hooks locked into place and are dirt cheap

Probably not. You could try zip ties, I use them all the time but I don't really care about what it looks like. My pegboard is fairly insane though, I got a ton of **** on there I'm not sure why it hasn't degraded or fallen apart (it's mounted a wood working table at the bottom). Honestly, my neighbor (government contractor at the crazy base; used to build BIG model airplanes in his spare time) was throwing it out so I borrowed it from the trash; I'm not THAT guy (digging through the trash) but it was in good condition.:dunno:

Brilliant idea, Dale!

Recommend you bite the bullet and replace the 1/8" hooks with 1/4" hooks.

Paint your pegboard. The board absorbs the paint and the holes shrink slightly. That helps stabilize the 1/4" hooks. I painted all our pegboards white which reflects light a lot better than the original dark brown color.

That sounds like a huge PITA compared to just buying some 1/4" hooks to fit your new board. You can find the old steel type anywhere for dirt cheap. I prefer the plastic ones that snap in and stay put.

I use the hooks to hold my 1/4", and 3/8" sockets for SAE and Metric. I can get 4 sets of 11 sockets onto 10" x 8" of board. That's a lot of stuff in a small space. The same is true for SAE and Metric wrenches. It just takes a 10" row to hold 11 wrenches.

Those plastic clips do work, but they end up wasting too much space.

I'm hoping the plastidip or the vinyl tubing will solve the problem without wasting any space.
