My favorite carpenter's pencil sharpener:



Works every time. Also handy for other uses.

X-Acto KS is an all metal sharpener, not quite the old Boston machine but does well enough.
None will satisfactorily sharpen a shippy pencil having off center lead
For those like me who prefer a round pencil the Berol Black Warrior used to be the gold standard. Looks like the brand has been passed down through several different makers and now landed with Paper Mate so cannot comment on current quality but worth a try, I suppose.
I noticed mention above of Blackwing 602 pencils. Never heard of these and they are quite spendy(yikes!) but now have something to ask for when Mrs Rust inquires about what I'd like for a gift.

The current production black warriors are okay, the erasers are not up to the standard of the Tennessee made ones.

My current supply of wood cased no. 2 pencil are golden bear. Cheap enough, made in the USA, decent erasers, hex case so they don’t roll away.

Do you happen to know the brand or have a link to the yellow sharpener? I wasn't able to find a sharpener for carpenter's pencils yet.

If you're asking about mine that beerhippie had be quoted, it's a Keson. Only other markings are
made in USA.

Still present is the $0.25 sticker from the garage sale. I got it at probably 10 years ago. Quick Google search shows the model as cp2.

When I took mechanical drawing in High School, 1956 if I remember correctly, the classroom pencil sharpener only cut the wood, we pointed the leads with sandpaper. That sharpener was unique to that classroom, all the other sharpeners pointed the pencils.

Yet another dedicated Black Ticonderoga user here.... I had bought 6 boxes before they jumped ship, then found a stationary supply house that had a stash of them, bought 10 boxes... IDK if they'll survuve me or vice versa, but I can't abide a crappy pencil.

Ugh, sandpaper. You needed a proper pencil pointer.

I use my 10" South Bend with a taper attachment.

No cutting oil.

I have one of those but I prefer this one from Hanson. The one you're asking about, sharpens it on 4 sides to a wedge point. The one linked below sharpens like a regular pencil point.

I figured while I was taking pics of the wedge sharpener, I'd snap another of the other CF Hanson sharpener I keep on my tool belt. A section of 550 cord and little carabiner so it doesn't get lost. . . just stuff it in the little pocket.

Funny, I was at a tool group sale, and someone showed up with a huge box of Carpenters pencils. I commented on my sharpener, and 3 or 4 people were interested in it. Someone mentioned the rotary type, and one guy booed him. I chuckled.

Whoa. . . little expensive but hey, if it's what you want.. . . sometimes it's the little things in life.


Honestly, now that I look back at Menards website, I think this is what I bought. . . . couple of bucks more, get a 10 pack of pencils.
