Nice penens stuff! Here are a couple open gear ratchets, a long handle p&c 1/2" drive and a 3/4 challenger that is a grind off rebrand.

Another p&c set from early 40s. Looks pretty much like plomb stuff! The t handle is unmarked and several pieces are marked plomb.

The first use of Challenger related to Plomb tools appeared in the 1940 catalog. My set with all 1939 dated tools has been shown in the Plomb thread.

That’s a beauty.

OTG, you’ve amassed quite a fine collection.

Some time in the coming months I hope to get my ratchet collection together. In 1/2” drive egg head shape I might have a dozen different ones, so I look forward to contributing.

I look forward to seeing them. A few more plombpire tools gathered at various sales. The first picture is from a sale in 2018. The Speedmaster tools came from an Oakland sale in 2019.

Those penens screwdrivers are pretty hard to find. Here are some socketeers as pictured in 55 challenger catalog.

An early fleet set. Sockets are marked Fleet, most tools penens. Hasp was loose so I spot welded it back on. Inside was very rusty so I cleaned and painted it. Outside is a bit rough, but wanted to save as much of the finish as possible so I clearcoated it.

3/8 drive challenger nut spinner set. Label missing on this one and had to add some tools.

Wow. That can’t be very common. I don’t think I have ever seen a p&c metric tool

Here is a little 4" Challenger 4204L Clik-Stop adjustable with a JPD code of F 1 8 for 1958. Nice clean little piece and works like a charm! Was part of a multi piece Estate sale (total of $2 spent!) earlier today.
Edit: Corrected date per Don's post related to the Clik-Stop timing. Thanks again Don.

Cute little wrench. Probably 1958.

Thanks Don. I failed to consider the Clik-Stop timing. I'll edit my post.

A recently acquired Penens 1661 1/2" drive ratchet. Another GJ member, Crabman, just received a Fleet branded 1/2" drive set, which prompted me to open mine up to take a look. Here it is this morning when I first opened it up:
Penens 1661 1.2 dr (22-tooth) ratchet (disassembled 01).jpg
Here it is after a good cleaning:
(I was also working on a little NB-made Penncraft)
Penens 1661 1.2 dr (22-tooth) ratchet (and 3632 Penncraft)(disassembled 02).jpg
And here are both the Penens and the Penncraft reassembled:

A few hours after having finished this little project, I come back to GarageJournal.com and I find this:
proto ratchet assembly instructions early oval head.jpg
Can someone tell me how I tell the Left Dog from the Right Dog?
And I'm going to guess after Crabman reads this, he's going to be asking the same question.

The ratchet (as assembled now) seems to be working just fine. Will it still work if the dogs are reversed? Or? :headscrat:

It works fine because the dogs are the same. They are not marked left or right nor does it matter. The only thing that matters is which side the rounded end with the little notch goes. If you install the dogs with the rounded end wrong it limits the movement of the dog.

Your ratchet looks like it came out great after cleaning. They are nice tools, I hope you enjoy it.

The left and right dogs are mirror images of one another. The notches in the dogs have to face out, not in. Your dogs and springs are positioned correctly in this picture2C8CB2B4-DAA8-4823-914F-928F070C6864.png.

okay cool. thanks. I didn't notice any markings on either so when I came across that diagram you'd posted in another thread I was a bit puzzled. :headscrat

InsaneEd - I recently acquired the Penens because I gave the one I owned previously to a friend. I kind of liked the action on the thing so I found another. For a 22-tooth mechanism, with a good cleaning and a bit of white lithium grease it operates quite nicely. ;)

Here are a few Penens DOEs along with some unmarked versions...did Plomb actually make these or were they made by someone else? The taper of the inset on the unmarked wrenches seems similar to Barcalo maybe?

The Penens wrenches were likely made in the old Danielson factory. They strongly resemble the old Danielson Controlled Steel DOE wrenches. I borrowed the image from AA.
C6ADEF46-DFBC-4DB8-B6DC-F74FA1F2B616.jpegI think the wrench marked Drop Forged next to the bottom is Vlchek.

Thanks OTG and Don! There seem to be a lot of different types of these similar looking DOE's, it's hard to keep them straight.
