I am hoping someone on here has some experience with these engines.

I need to remove the fuel pump off a Perkins 1103 - 3 cylinder engine with Delphi fuel pump.

Is it possible to find TDC on the compression stroke without removing the rocker cover?

The workshop manual only talks about the 4 cylinder models and specifies to judge the position from the no. 4 cylinder valve positions and then use two locking pins.

Is there no easy way of doing this? Are there no marks on the timing gears (like on the older perkins engines)? Is it not possible to use the locking pins on their own to locate tdc on compression?

pull the spark plug....screwdriver in the hole till its top dead center.... if you can get a wire in through that hole you may be able to tell when the intake valve is open and when it closes to determine top dead center. catch my drift?

I can look at work and see if there is a workshop manual for the 1100 series. We did a bunch of pump upgrades at work on Perkins 4 cylinders but that was 4 years ago.

Is there something preventing you from removing the valve cover? As I recall there was a plug to remove on the side of the bell housing to insert the locking pin.
