I’ve been through the prolonged permit process myself.
I too suggest taking down that picture, cropping out your name and address and reposting.
And your paying there wages, stay strong and best of luck. Few years ago pulling my permit and county building dept woman going thru blue permits saw one of two covered porches and said hold on. More $$$ and out the door I went. In credibly demeaning experience.

By contrast, here in rural SC our permit for our house took 15 minutes and cost $400. Most places I've lived have been a hassle.

I've done 4 permits since we moved here 7 years ago, a new detached garage and renovating existing garage into living space being the bigger ones. Walked into town office with plans and application, walked out with permission to procede. Permits were mailed the following week.

Back in fall of 2019 I was traveling weekly for work. I submitted my 24x28 shop plans from Menards to the city of Green Bay via their webpage. Less than $250 and I had my construction permit a week after I sent it in online.

I paid that much for a permit to replace the boards on an existing deck. It was an old deck built on top of a 2 car garage. All I was doing was tearing off the old wood, re Roofing the flat garage roof, putting down PT 2x4 sleepers, and then synthetic deck boards.
I thought it was a like-for-like repair job and didn’t apply for a building permit.
An inspector drove by, saw the work being done and stopped my job until I went to city hall and paid the man.

I can't imagine living anywhere like that. We only have permits for septic and it's a small fee.

I have only had to pull permits for an installation of the toilet and associated enclosure, plus the electrical permit to add a light in the toilet room.
Also pulled a permit to repair a fence at a rental, both of them were painless, my city building department has been a pleasure to work with.
They did not make it difficult.

Every place is different. I have a buddy in CT that took years to get a permit, and it cost $66,000, over 30 years ago. Granted, there were variances and other issues, but still.

I agree, what you did to me would not require a permit if it just updating the structure that is already there. Unless that structure of feature was originally compromising the structure itself. However, the proof in that is the longevity of what was previously there.
San Fran is a lot different than Green Bay WI in more ways than one. I bet Californa is ripe with all sorts of "make you pay" objectives that only cost you the owner more money for nothing gained.

Same here for an outbuilding or addition. Square footage is all they need (and a house needs a septic permit) and they reference a chart to see what that square footage permit cost and away you go.

OP's project if I recall was mired in zoning as he as partially over the building restriction line and wanted to have its south wall tight to the alley at a former wall location.
