Admin/Mods-

Are there any 'global' solutions to the photobucket P500 shakedown issue?

In other words, a VB script that can fix links, allows users to quickly fix their links, etc, etc??

I know the 'manual' solution is 'each user re-hosts their pictures; goes to each link; edits each link

Given that this has decimated so many forums, I am guessing VB (or others) may have some less manual solutions. For example:

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=325315&highlight=photobucket

Anyone here working on this??

;)

There is a solution posted in that topic. Paul M is very very old school and knows his stuff. Since GJ is still running vB 3.8.x they should be able to use the Chevereto link posted in that thread.

I'm all for it... The problem with a bulk solution like this is that members all have to upload their images to some consistent location or use some script to bulk rename and then re upload to TGJ. This would be a nightmare to support.

Man, photobucket screwed us all... I'm hoping for another solution of some kind to pop up.

Why doesn't it? If it hosts images...

Hi there Sixfeet4,

Within our TOS, we do not allow the usage of imgur as a content delivery network on any site that has a section dedicated to selling. This is considered advertising. (much like eBay is blocked as well).

I do apologize for this inconvenience. I look forward to seeing you further within the community.

Best,
Isaac K.

I guess the problem is that Imgur will eventually block hot linking because we have a classifieds section...

Man. That is ******* stupid.

I'm guessing it's an issue that have to do per website or they have changed some of their TOS after the Photobucket debacle in order to gain paying customers.

In the past, IMGUR photos have quit showing up here, why they are now, I'm not sure. I know it was an issue over at YellowBullet too which has a classified section.

So is the resolution to this to use Imgur and hope they dont catch on that GJ has a for sale board? I found this site https://postimages.org/ and it seems to be geared directly towards hosting for Forums like this. Works like Photobucket but seems a lot simpler and cleaner. Posted my images here for a test

Tried Imgur earlier and my photo wasn't displaying in the post. I ended up creating a user gallery here and using the BB link generated for the photo by GJ. YMMV I guess.

I'm on several other vBulletin forums, and the forum owner HOSTS THE PICS I UPLOAD.

Newsflash...this GJ forum isn't paying for image storage....you are when you have to have them hosted somewhere else and then link them to this forum.

PITA...

The images are already on MY hard drive. Why do I want to move them to a hosting site, when GJ forum can just host the ones I want to upload as I submit posts?

For the $50 they ask here, it would seem logical to use that for adding image storage capacity.

Sorry for the rant. This is a great forum otherwise.

Not sure why the rant.

GJ will allow you to upload images. Period.

Even for their members that don't pay for membership.

Newsflash

:)

Personally I prefer that solution. As a mod elsewhere, we are not subject to the whims of another site- our images, on our site, displayed for our users. Even before PB, there would be a great old DIY thread with broken links when a forgotten user cleaned out a photo account and (perhaps unknowingly) killed the thread.

HOWEVER, when I posted about this in the 'photobucket screwed me thread' there were large numbers of people who thought this was insane. "They are MY images, I want to control them" or "they are already uploaded elsewhere, why should I have to re-upload?" Or "I don't want to have to resize them'. Lots of objections to uploading to garagejournal....

New to GJ Old Guy here....so, it is impossible to view Hiball's images in his jack tutorial? Not sure that I understand the PhotoBucket, Flickr, hosting problems so will keep watching this thread to see if there is ever a fix.

FWIW, I do not mind subscribing to a useful knowledge based site like this which would save me hours of trying to sort out repair issues on my own...while undoubtedly breaking stuff while sorting

If anyone has suggestions about how Hiball's jack repair tutorial might be accessible, I would be all ears :thumb:

Thanks in advance

HiBall's thread can be repaired if he choses to host the pictures elsewhere if he decides to pay the PB "ransom", host them elsewhere and relink the photos or attach them/upload them here.

All he has to do is ask that the thread be unlocked so he can fix it.

When I do a quick reply, and click on the photo icon (to post a pic) I get a pop up box that asks for the url of the image.

No options to redirect or pull the image from my own hard drive.

I like this forum, and you guys on it, and want to post some pics but I'm not going to use a hosting site.
What am I missing here?

For anyone who wants to host their photos directly on GarageJournal rather than take their chances with another hosting site that may follow in PhotoBucket's footsteps, here are the steps I took to restore all of the photos on my build thread. It took about five hours to restore 185 images.

1. Edit your photos to a reasonable file size (I had already done this before uploading to PhotoBucket and still had a folder on my PC containing the PhotoBucket hosted images). GJ allows a maximum file size of 146.5 KB and maximum dimensions of 850 by 850 Pixels. The GJ uploading tool is supposed to convert larger files to smaller ones automatically, but it didn't work for one large image I tried. If you have to convert many images, you may want to try the GJ upload tool first to see if you can eliminate the conversion step.
2. Create a public photo album in GarageJournal under your profile.
3. Upload photos to your album (you can do this seven images at a time and are limited to 1000 photos).
4. Make a spreadsheet with two columns showing the file name used in your PhotoBucket link and the new GJ hyperlink for each photo like this:
View media item 72240
5. Copy the direct link to each new GJ hosted photo (click on the thumbnail in your GJ photo album to display the image as a larger size, then right-click on the large image and Copy Image Address) and paste it into your spreadsheet.
6. Edit your GJ posts - where you see the old PhotoBucket link, replace it with the new GJ link copied from your spreadsheet.

A very good, free program for conversions is XnView. You can use the batch processing feature to convert any images that need to be resized to whatever resolution and file format you want. You don't have to manually resize each picture, which is great.

Here is a good video tutorial for resizing.

Any website you upload photos to is going to have a chance of doing what Photobucket did. This chance is much greater than that of this website getting rid of your photos.

It is very strange that imgur now works. I would recommend disabling hotlinks to imgur in the classifieds section. Or at least making it against the rules. That might appease imgur.

I don't upload many photos to the GJ site, but the few I have worked fine uploading directly to GJ as an attachment. I've been using 1600 x 1200 pixels and they look fine. Could probably make them a little larger also if I wanted to.

Wait a second. I too would like to use Imgur but it doesn't seem to work correctly in here. Well at one time it didn't anyway. I was told awhile back by an admin it had something to do with sales ads or something. So what's going on now? Is Imgur able to be used in here now or what? Seems it works for Ryan. Are we allowed to use it or not? Is yes, will it even work correctly in here or not? I'm so confused. It used to be that when I would copy and paste the BBcode from Imgur it would only show up correctly for a few minutes and then disappear. Other times it would show up but then be invisible on other persons computer devices. And some other times I was yelled at for using Imgur all together and was told to use GJs photo upload method instead which doesn't post nice and large photos. I personally would like to use Imgur again. Does it work in here or not?

Imgur will work for a bit, but eventually they will blacklist the site again because we have a classifieds section... I don't really get why they do that.

There are many hosting sites. But I don't get, is why doesn't GJ just update the hosting site software to the most update VB, so pictures can be properly in bedded. I'm sure there's a dozen workarounds, but they sound like work.

What version of VB is running and when's the last time there was an upgrade?

https://forum.canadianwoodworking.c...ction/43202-building-bill-pentz-blower-for-dc

We are running 3.8... I never upgraded to the 4 series because of the huge security problems with it. As soon as Xenforo 2.0 is out, we will be transitioning the garage journal to that.
