Pick a plasma cutter

Any thoughts on a Licoln Tomahawk 375?

I like the idea of Hypertherm machines. But the best price I've found on a PM45 is around $1800.

Junk. I had one for a couple of months.BTW I'm a ******** Lincoln guy.
Buy a Hypertherm.

Ditto. I picked up a Miller 625 xtreme a few months back off craigslist. I haven't used it a lot but man, it' cuts quick and easy. When I researched plasmas, the takeaway was the same....go hypertherm. Maybe it's true, I am by no means an expert but I would walk away thinking Miller's are bad.

Also one really good thing about the 625 xtreme is that it's a 40amp machine but still 110v capable. Both Hypertherm and Miller have that in the smaller machine but it's cool that the 625 is the next size up and has the multi plug option.

If your not using your machine daily. Maybe a Chinese brand is a better value. (everlast, longevity, etc).. If you plan to use it maybe once or twice a week if that. Then save a few bucks..But if you're using it daily then go with a Miller.

I purchased a multiprocess everlast unit for 1200 a few years ago. I used it a lot when I was building my custom bike and it works really good. But I'm not sure if It would hold up to daily use even though there has been many great reviews on these units. You did mention home use so I personally would save some cash and go Chinese. Just buy a popular Chinese brand you should be okay. Or buy a used Miller if you can find one at a reasonable price.. I couldn't.

I am thinking about buying a cheap standalone plasma cutter for work (auto technician) would come in handy for cutting out sway bar links and ford shocks. More precise than me using an acetylene torch.

Who is making Eastwood's machine for them? I have heard from a few people who say they have been satisfied with them, and they are pretty low priced.

I'll probably get shouted down for suggesting this but Harbor Freights $600 plasma cutter has gotten really good reviews across the board. It is starting to be used on a lot of cnc machines as well. It seems that hypertherm is the industry standard but if you are just using it for the occasional home hobby use it is probably overkill. A lot of how well these machines work has to do with the operator. Someone unskilled in using a plasma cutter can quickly burn up tips or end up with jagged cuts with lots of slag no matter what quality machine they use.

I do think at times we get hung up on using what welding shops use, and frankly that is overkill when us have less demands, requirements, and abuse the things less than a welding shop would. If you are making your living on a machine, it certainly makes sense to spend $2k. But not if you use it a dozen times a year for half an house each time.
