I hate that sickening smell of PB Blaster to the point where I think I am just going to lose it if I ever smell it again!!

can someone recommend a solvent to loosen rusted or stuck fasteners, that works as well and is reasonably priced and doesn't have this horrific sweet sickening smell that is making me crazy? :rocketwho

thanks

vinegar works and that has another smell not so nice. kroil is on the top of my list for the sprays along with the others that have already said it's theirs.

I like the smell.

A good penetrant is ATF mixed with acetone. I have it in a spray bottle. Shake and spray...

PB doesnt bother me. ATF/acetone is something Ive tried lately...it does work. Vinegar works on everything, awesome stuff.

My boss bought a case of some stuff Zep sells that he swears works better than PB. I can't tell a difference in results, but damned if it doesn't smell exactly like artificial banana flavoring. Whether that's better or worse than PB is open to discussion.

There is also Liquid Wrench and I think WD-40 has just come out with a liquid penetrant as well. Might need to add Kroil to my arsenal.

I agree, the smell of PB Blaster is sickening!

I don't mind the smell, it tells me it's working.
Then again, every March I still get cravings for the smell of bark mulch and diesel fumes due to an annual contract job I had for 10yrs. That job ended 14yrs ago, so I may not be the best judge. :willy_nil

I know I have mentioned it before. The best stuff I have used is Northwoods Breakaway and Swepco 808 for fairly instant results. The 808 is great with some heat, while the Breakaway is a more versatile product and dissipates, much like WD-40 or LPS-1. LPS products are great industrial products too btw. Id say everyone of them on the market works to some degree, especially with heat. Id say a little heat and candle wax or ATF/acetone will be your most cost effective option. The ATF mix is something im trying (at home), candle wax and the blue flame has never let me down.

This has been discussed here before in the past but it may have been awhile. Look at this:

Penetrating oil comparisons

For all of you that are mechanically inclined..... Penetrating Oils Compared A study done by Machinist's Workshop magazine in their April 2007 issue looked at different penetrating oils to see which one did the best job of removing a rusted bolt by measuring the pounds of torque required to loosen the bolt once treated. If the study was scientifically accurate, it turns out a home brew works best! Here's the summary of the test results:

Penetrating oil .......... Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................... 238 pounds

PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ............ 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix.............53 pounds

The Automatic Transmission fluid (ATF)-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

I've used the ATF-Acetone mix and can say it worked when heat, WD-40 (no surprise) and breaker bars didn't. It's readily available, cheap and you just mix up enough for what you need. Why pay $$$ and have to internet order something else?

I like Kroil, but also buy this **** by the case:

Schaeffer Penetro 90

It works almost as well as kroil without the stink. It's my go to air tool/compressor intake lube. I think it's on the same par for price (I can't remember, I just tell my dealer to put a case or two on when I order oil).

Acetone and atf may get the job done, but acetone is some nasty stuff. Avoid flames and inhalation/skin contact if you can.

Wear a breather mask?:willy_nil

I'm confused by this thread. Don't ever smell old supercharger oil if you're smell sensitive.

67carl;
on one of my Motorcycle Forums a guy posted up about the same results from a testing lab.....he works on oil platforms in the North Sea

50/50 ATF and acetone is the way to go and I've used Kroil for 30+ years

I use firearm cleaning and lubricating solutions.

Break-Free CLP is my favorite, and does a very nice job. If you want something that smells nice, though, G96 is the ticket.

I use that on my P32, and have been complimented on my cologne.
