Please recommend an excellent Trash Can

I searched the posts and was surprised to find nothing on Trash Cans. I did a Google search, messed around with that for a while and now I am back.
The old cans (15 yrs. Old) need replacing. They are Rubbermaid wheeled models, square in shape with loose lids. 32 gallon I believe.

I would be happy to get the same again but reviews say they have changed for the worse. Poor weather ability, easy to crack and poor handle design.

I prefer wheeled models, not too heavy for the trash guys.

What do my panel of objective experts recommend?

For my garage inside, Im thinking of getting the Rubbermaid Slim Jim. Not for outdoor trash receptacle use.

32 gallons (i think) Expensive though at 40-50 bucks just for the can. there are different lids and they cost another 25 bucks. Wheels...another 50-100 dollars. Ouch!

i agree with the toter cans. i have had my first one for about 6 years. One wheel fell off after about a month and the sent me a replacement without any problems. i have had my second one for about 3 years and i cracked the lid. it was my fault and i contacted them for a replacement. even offered to pay for the replacement in my email. they sent me a new one for free.

The brutes are very nice. I could have gotten a 55 gal for $45 but I just had absolutely no room to put it in the truck or trailer. It sucked.

If you have garbage collection, make sure whatever you buy they willl allow. I hate a tote in one area of my county that Waste Management would accept, but one I moved into another, they refused to pick it up. I thought that was odd, as it was the kind that mated up with the life arm of their truck so the driver could empty it without leaving the cab. Turns out the city has a deal where the only way you get a big tote is to rent it from the company, as opposed to owning it.

Rubbermaid Brute is what I buy for the school where I work. They last a long time, have a variety of lid designs, wheel assemblies are available and they come in many sizes and colors. I buy gray for trash, blue for recyclables, white for ice melting salt and red for athletic field trash containers (red is a school color).

And if you loop a piece of chain with snap hooks through the handles, including the lid, it becomes bearproof...

My plastic cans, last spring, got destroyed by some of the smaller, eastern bears.

Bear-proof???

Maybe racoon-resistant, but NOT bear-proof.

Big (or bigger) bears just drag the can around and then STOMP on it. Flattens the can (plastic OR sheetmetal) and pops the top off. Chain or not.

Oh, don't get me wrong, securing the lid in some fashion sure does cut down on the 'smaller' critters getting into the trash and spilling it all over the place. But those cans aren't 'bear-proof' no matter what you do to them.

For a "bear-proof" garbage can you have to get something that can withstand a 300-500+ pound adult bear STOMPING on it as well as can't be dragged off into the woods as well as can't have the lid or can pried off or scratched or bitten through.

The Toter cans seem to have a (relatively) sturdy construction. The lid however is a bit light, thin, and flimsy and doesn't 'seal' or latch down at all (probably some sort of 'safety' regulation somewhere to avoid smashed fingers or heads or trapped kids. I don't want smashed fingers or heads or trapped kids, but I also don't want critters or a knocked-over can to strew garbage all over the place). The lid is definitely NOT bear-proof

These cans are the best for inside the shop. You can even get the wheels for them if you like. Two of them even make a quick bench with a piece of plywood.

Wow guys! I really appreciate all the great suggestions. With the advent of the Internet I try and do a quick search for stuff before I buy, either to save a buck or to avoid buying junk. I will stop at Lowes on the way home, and maybe Home Depot to compare. I will post with the details.

Instead of trash cans I use trash compactors.......they consolidate and make a nice cube. Plus, I have one in the shop and the house....the fun is seeing just how flat i can make something.......really crushes cans and bottles.... You can probably get at least 30 or 40 lbs in one bag.

It takes a while and lots of noise for a bear to open a can that is chained shut...by then the dogs are moving and lights are on...and the bear will run...

And it saves so much time in collecting animal scattered garbage.

I thought I was the only one with a million contractor bags. A couple of years ago I was building the Man Cave and went to Lowes a couple of times a week. They had contractor bags for a little over $10 with a $10 gift card in each box. Every purchase included a new box of bags and used the card from the last purchase. I have at least enough for two lifetimes.

I have a Rubbermaid BRUTE 50-Gallon Roll-Out Container that has been good for two years. My old cans lasted 25 years and if this one does half as well I will be happy. It will not get a lot of wear and tear since the local trash company decided to furnish 65 gallon roll-out containers for use with their automated trucks. My old can works with the trucks also. I use it for overflow now to make it easier for the route man. Personally the 50 gallon can is a little easier to get to the curb with this everlasting snow. I will be glad when it melts in the next few days.

Well, I stopped at Lowes on the way home (in Lebanon Ohio) and I did not make a purchase. They did have the round Brute cans and the 4 wheel dollies that go with them. This will not work for me as my driveway has about a 35 degree slope. And unless I want to bowl with garbage and the oncoming traffic I will be constantly chasing them down the hill. (lots of fun working on a creeper too). The square Rubbermaid wheeled version was noticeably thinner than my old ones. They had some nicer ones with hinged lids, but alas were only 55 gallon and larger. Too big for the trash guy.

Next stop Home Depot, Ace hardware and maybe Tractor Supply.

My son dislikes my avatar but it does not matter, -I like it. I am old, losing my hair and my eyesight so I feel it is appropriate. I have an extensive collection of visual aids. I just bought one of those magnifying camera setups.

I have one of these made by Niehoff Ignition. I have added sticker to it over the years. I would like to find more with logo on them Like I have see pennzoil one for sale but they are asking to much for a trash can. The few oil change places I checked out said they do not get them They have bulk oil delivered.(no barrel) When I worked at a garage In my younger days we would get all types of oil delivered in the smaller cans. I think they are 35 gallon drums.

If any one sees them let me know (cheep)

I have found that recent rubbermaid products are not nearly as durable as the older ones. I have an older rubbermaid 32 gallon round can, and even though it is starting to get holes in the bottom from being worn away, it is still heavier than the new cans.
