A bit, yes. They're out there. I've got one in the drawer. Pretty cool.

I picked up this bar of rust at the flea last weekend. Was pretty sure it was Plomb. Cleaned up pretty well. Date code is EB? The repaired selector could stand to be replaced, but it works well enough.

Wow! That is an amazing Plomb collection!
-Don

Thanks! Ive worked pretty hard on it last couple years. think this is my third year collection Plomb tools...

Wow! Plompire is not an understatement. Some of the members should be cautioned before viewing, lest they have a plomburism!

hahaha PlombTastic!!

RagTop, next time I'm down at Sheppard I will pay you a visit, at 0200.

Please do!! ill prob be up working on some kinda rusty tools in the garage! you could help and scavenge some stuff!!! I'm 8 miles from there btw.

Rags! What everyone else said! I think it's funny how your last find (the softblow hammer) is on top of the pile, like when you started there was one thing, and every week you came home and just put things on the pile! Haha. I want to know what's on the bottom! (Not really... don't go digging... just kidding around...)

Hah Lugz!! whats at the bottom of that pile you are talking about is the 25 or so Plomb wrenches that have that curious gray coating on them! oh.. and some other good stuff : )

What should I use to lube the gear? I’m hesitant to use a 3-in-1 oil since those attract dust and will gum up, but I’ve heard marine grease will do the same thing. These will be used, not stored away to never see the light of day.

Plomb recommended light oil or very light grease.
I tend to oil, then mix in just enough grease to dull the clack of the dogs a bit.

Care and feeding of Plomb ratchets, pic lifted off another member.

It’s sad when a Man dies and someone gets his tools. Where is the Son?, The Grandson?. I’m glad they go to someone who will care for them but have a tear in my eye for that old guy who once used them and helped make this country of independent mechanics and craftsmen the great place it is now...Oops, was fifty years ago.

I feel this same way when attending many of the estate sales I frequent. Particularly if the deceased was a WWII or Korean Conflict vet (like my dad was, and whose tools I cherish and will pass to his grandsons.)

BB,

Is that your father's Bronze Star? As I am sure you already know, while many Bronze Stars were handed out as service medals (anyone with a Ground Infantry Badge automatically earned one), not many "V" devices were, which required a specific act of valor. Very impressive!

If you don't mind saying, in which unit did he serve in WWII?

New this forum (it's addictive!) and primarily a vintage Craftsman guy but while out picking today I decided to dip my toes into the Plomb would. Really cool, well made stuff that I only discovered since joining the forum. I picked up this metal box today marked Plomb Tools Los Angeles and what appears to be 4795. From what I've read about Plomb so far I believe the 47 series is 1/4" drive but all I'm seeing on other boxes like this is 4749. I find 4749 ratchets for sale but have yet to see anything in a 4795.I'd like to hunt down what's supposed to be in this box. Can any Plomb experts out there fill me in as to the correct tools to be in here?

It appears there is several different sets as the part number is for the box only and not the set.
Here is one example.

Ahhh. Thanks for the help!
No problem and welcome to the forum. I first learned about Plomb here as well. It is not very common in this area and now I have an addiction maybe. Might still be in denial.

Here are some choices. The pin handle is missing on this set.

My Dad served in Korea; he was about 14 when the US entered WWII.

That's not his actual Bronze Star, but he was awarded the Bronze Star w/ "V" device for carrying (with the help of a few South Koreans) a dozen or so injured US soldiers about 3 miles to safety, all the while under constant artillery and mortar fire from Chinese forces. I think he made 3 round trips to do so.

This took place in 1952 near Pork Chop hill. He was a sergeant in the 45th Infantry division, aka the Thunderbirds. He was quite a guy, and very humble and reluctant to talk about his time in Korea.

Notlob: great story about your dad.

ALL: I agree that i'm a little sad when the tools at estate sales are not passed on or taken by the kids or grandkids. that said all my sons are techies so I guess America is on top of the tech world now and that's where the money is. still it would be nice if they were a bit handier which i keep trying to teach them every chance i get. especially when they have an issue at their home and want me to help out.

carry on and i'm still trying to find my PLVMB tools in boxes and buckets and hope I still have them so i can put them in my new vintage cabinets.

cheers

This (wartime 5686 3/4-inch drive Ell handle) is a fairly boring entry, and spotted with removed box rot stains, but I haven't found a Plomb piece in awhile, and this one is already in the 'Tin Medic set aside' pile, so I had better capture my brief and tenuous ownership of it now. :)

A while back, my neighbor and I were checking out the Tahoe flea and he found one before I did. Here is his and all I have is the pictures.

I wish I could help you out, Otg, but it's already spoken for.

Looks to be in better condition than mine, but I am glad I found it. I was a little lop-sided with Steve (after his Williams 'Bantam Bonanza' shipment to me, which included, ironically, a little Williams B-50 3/8-inch drive Ell handle), so it's good to get evener.

Elegant in its simplicity
Agreed. GJ'er ganymede started a thread on the subject a few years ago that is still a good read, if you’re interested in seeing more of them. The last post in the thread is the Williams B-50 I was just discussing with Don above, but I think I'll change that with the Plomb club I just found. Thread linked here.

BTW, I ran into a mess of high quality vintage drive tools and wrenches at my flea today. Cornwell, Snappy, and seven (7) Plomb pieces, including a massive Pebble DOE wrench. I need to de-rust everything.

Picked up another Toolmobile for $40 yesterday evening. It's a little rough, has had a couple repaints, needs new casters, missing the sliding tray in the 3rd drawer, but overall solid. As much as I don't like restored boxes, this one having none of the original finish, will make a great candidate. For now I'm going to park it next to my other Toolmobile and fill it full of the extras.

You **** ! That is a smoking deal on that. Does it have a serial number in the top ? Should be on the left side near the lip. Feel free to post pictures and restoration photos in my pressteel thread !

Here's the only Plomb piece in that lot of rusty classics I picked up at the flea market this morning that didn't need soaking in anything. There was some rust in the jaws, but the condition of the plating and the pebbling is pretty danged exceptional if I do say so myself. Postwar MFD. This wrench is nearly a half inch (15/32") thick in the shank. Going into the big fat whoppin' DOE wrench bin for now.

Since the set I bought recently with the bent pin handle was incomplete, I picked up enough of the missing pieces to consider it pretty complete. Here are the 1/4” drive sets together as of today.

Congrats, but you get a "double ****" from me on that deal!! You guys on the West Coast are driving me crazy with how casual you are about finding stuff like this! Lol! If I ever find one of these back here they would likely have to revive me after I pass out right on the spot!

They look great Don. I've just about got all my stuff unpacked and sorted from our move. I need to update some pics to share.
