I agree with that theory Don. After going back through this thread a couple times, yours and Carla's are the only examples of 5200Y I can find and Dan's and mine along with Project 2501 from post 6469 are the only examples of 5200X I can find.

Thanks to GJ member SS Dave a few more have hit the Plomb wall. The 1147 is much longer than the others. I know they made some extra long series wrench during this era at least on the DOEs 30XX. I will have to do some cat checking. I am now 16 of 26 on LA DBEs including the 1132 and 1133 Chevy special ones with one more coming in next week.

I also added my 2 6pt. 52XX sockets both 1/4". The LA is not stamped with an H and I don't think they made a 12pt in this era. The non LA is a 1940 which is 5208-H.IMG_20200118_130806507.jpegIMG_20200118_131428076.jpegIMG_20200118_131520664.jpegIMG_20200118_131120154.jpegIMG_20200118_131149075.jpegIMG_20200118_131200703.jpeg

Hey there Smokeshow, I have a spare 1236 Pebble ... Maybe we can trade. I'd be looking for crowsfeet or WF stuff.

It's in good shape, no owner's mark or other major blemishes.

Here's a couple pics of it

I received some Plomb pieces yesterday from SS Dave (Thanks, Dave) and had time to clean up a couple. Here are the ones finished so far.

I got a few Plomb items in a tool box I bought yesterday, but this was the only thing I thought was worth posting.

Plomb 3420 single open end tappet wrench.

Nice. You have to be getting close to a full set of pebble combos.

Roy, and Don,

Glad to see those things in your collection instead of my pile. I sold a few things locally today, it's really rewarding to see space opening up in my garage and shop so I can work.

Just thought of something I can't remember if I showed here before.

The very first set of Proto wrenches I got, I still own. Bought them from an old fellow on oxygen at his pre-estate sale 30 years ago. DBE Proto Los Angeles 81xx series. Two don't match, one is not a Proto LA, but same style, and one is a Plomb, again same style. I've since added two dual marked extras to the set.

I didn't use to differentiate between Plomb and Proto, so never noticed for a long time that they were mis-matched, as the numbers are correct, and the wrench pattern is identical. I used these wrenches extensively for many years, now they're evolving into part of my Proto LA collection to fill my green 1958 Proto top chest.

If anybody needs the Plomb 8180, I'd much rather have a similar condition Proto LA 8180 to exactly match the set. Until I find one, it's the next best thing to having the correct Proto LA 8180. The dual marked is even closer, I'd guess.

I'd trade the 8180 Plomb or dual marked for a Proto Los Angeles, or trade a dual marked 8183 or the Proto 8183 for the correct Proto Los Angeles 8183. I'd trade the Pebble Plomb 1127 for either, also. I found it after I set aside the lot I posted earlier that Don and Roy picked from.

Not a tool, but was perusing a Popular Mechanics from Dec. 1949 and saw this ad. Thought it might fit in here...

Sorry it is small, it was a snip.

Another milestone.
Will the recent additions to the Plomb wall. I can now say I have 800 unique Plomb tools (not counting date codes or war finish) and also creeping up on 1500 total. The additions to the wall are a 1155 LA DBE, a 1222 LA shorty, and a 3027 LA DOE. The LA list is slowly but surely filling up with only the 2 largest combos 1-1/8" and 1-1/4" left to fill.
Does anyone know when Plomb switched their combos from the short style to the standard style. I have 2 early shorties. A 9/16" undated and a 1933 11/16" now. Pics attached.IMG_20200121_195632993.jpegIMG_20200121_195639460.jpegIMG_20200121_195644653.jpegIMG_20200121_195648504.jpegIMG_20200121_200023905_HDR.jpegIMG_20200121_200030840_HDR.jpeg

Loose. I also have a 4 point in 3/8" drive. The only one I have ever seen. I will grab a pic later today. I have another one arriving today.

I also have a Plomb LA 4 point 3/8's, and I am pretty sure I have a couple of 6 points. I have family in town, otherwise, I would go check. I will put up a pic later.

Thank you. Now if I can just find that damn 3061. I ended up picking up a pebble wrench last night that isn't in the catalogs from what I have found. I can't wait to get it and post a pic up.

Here we go:

I thought I had more hex, but they were Proto.
Thanks BMW. Looks like your hex sockets are the impact versions which are also hard to find.

That’s what my 6 point socket is too. I checked my late wartime set and the sockets are 12 point down to 1/4”

Thanks Don. I should have clarified my Challenger set related statement in post 7921 better about having not seen hex 3/8 drive Plomb sockets before. I don't own any, but have indeed seen pics of the 72XX impact versions. While they are rare indeed, it is the 52XX hex versions that other than the two Roy showed in post 7929 that I've never seen before. Can't say that I've ever seen the 4 pt version of BMW's 5208 either.

I’ve never seen any 52XX hex sockets either, except in the catalog. Maybe they never actually produced any. With all of the rare Plomb tools that all of us turn up, you would think that someone would have some. How about this conventionally numbered 9/32” drive screwdriver bit I received in an eBay Plomb lot yesterday?

You may have missed it, Don, but I found two of those last August, posting several photos and discussing them in a post on this thread linked here: a 4844 (Size 1, 3/16") and a 4845 (Size 2, 9/32"). Oddly, the 1/4-inch drive 4744 (1/4") and 4745 (3/8") versions are different tip widths/sizes.

I must have read it because I responded to it with my similarly numbered 9/32” hinge handle. I think it might be this case of CRS* I’ve been working on.:headscrat

I totally forgot I started that list! If you, MR. X, and tin medic just send me all your 48xx sh*t, I will combine it with my 48xx sh*t, and I won't have CR 48xx S anymore, and you guys won't have to worry about remembering you have it.

Too funny.

Picked up this 5420S 5/8" 8-pointer today at the flea market this morning. Funny worn thin finish. Not chrome. Not cad I don't think. Awfully shiny. Maybe nickel.

Me neither. In fact, I don't remember seeing any files in the early (pre-1934) catalogs other than body work files (i.e., vixen, flexible, curved, etc). I wonder if Plomb made them or subbed them out.
I remember seeing them. I think they kept the old part number scheme (with letters) for them similar to the slugging and striking wrenches.

Not to pull a Missouri ("Show me") on you, Rushmore, :) … but I just checked the 1925, 1928, 1931, 1933, and 1936 cats, and I don't see any machinists' files. That's what Skooch has there. A 10- or 12-inch flat file, ******* cut, by the looks of it, and a 6 or so inch round file, probably ******* cut. Again, I see the body work files (vixen, curved, and flexible), but I don't see any machinists' files. If I am missing them, what catalog and what page?

EDIT: Sorry, Skooch, in going back I see that you already identified the files and cuts for us. I missed that in my excitement! HAHA.

Another wrench for the board. A large slugging wrench shown next to a DA8 for size. IMG_20200125_091640959.jpeg
