Can anyone make sense of this marking? WF side looks normal ... but look at the flip side.

They've been shown and discussed before. Search thread on Industrial & Vocational. No hard evidence to corroborate that theory, but there is precedence for Plomb adapting WF series to postwar customers (such as Ma Bell).

I appreciate all the appreciation of my neon. I was so giddy when I got home from the pick that I immediately took one photo and then it went straight into a box nestled with packing stuff. It lived in that box for maybe 2 years until a couple months ago when I put it in a prime spot, figured it needed to be seen.

Thanks for the welcome wishes, as well as from others ... especially the "you ****!" from jusridin, which I gladly accept as the highest compliment.

Below you will see my Plomb ratchet drawer. Each era represented, 1/2" drive, 3/8", 1/4", and 9/32". My 3/4" drive didn't make it in the shot.

Major you ***** are in order for that sign! That sign makes me sweat! Very nice find. Welcome to the forum

I've come across a few P&C screwdrivers recently and today I found a PLOMB example in the same style. Can anyone shed light on when these would have been made? I am not having any luck with my online searching.

Thanks,

EDIT-- I suppose I could start working my way back through the 393 pages in this thread! I am sure the answer is in there somewhere.

Since I’ve traded some away and added others I took pictures of some tools in my Plomb toolbox on Thursday. Duplicates are available for trades. First the wrenches.

1/2” drive, 3/8” drive and my current S.R. sockets. The last shot is of my dual marked tools.

Mint: I can't say for sure the dates on your plastic handled Plvmb screwdrivers, but thinking late 40's and if you do manage to read more of the thread and find out if it was 1948 or 1949 or ?? please let us know.

also looks like you are another PNW member so good to have you snagging a few of these old Plvmb to keep me from buying them all.

Hey Don,
Is the that DBE a WF series? It appears to have a cad finish.

Roy,
I don’t have any WF tools. The large DBE is an 1151. 1-1/4” x 1-1/16”. It’s kind of hard to see the part number.

It looked bigger than a WF-85 and those large WF DBEs are hard to come by. Thanks for checking.

Don is everything pictured a duplicate? For instance I would be interested in the 1-1/4 smooth combo and some other things pictured but needed clarification. Thanks

A thread bumper (pun intended). Snagged this beauty. A highly sought after 1430 in great shape.IMG_20200108_145556653.jpegIMG_20200108_145605294.jpeg

I don't find much Plomb in the wild here but I found this 4508 eccentric stud puller today.

Dang. So that head would be made prior to 1930?
Here's the earlier version. Apparently they still had this particular one in stock when they transitioned to the 14XX hammer numbers.

If that's when they switched then yes. A friend of made the comment that it was likely in as good as shape as it is because it lost it's handle somewhere along the way.

Make since due to the fact it is a consumable tool being brass. That is an amazing piece.

You may be able to really narrow down the production to 1928 or 1929 on that HB3. Strangely, Catalog No. 8 (1928) lists it as 1-1/2 lbs, while Catalog No. 9 (1929) lists it as 1-3/4 lbs. That's from my hammer notes anyway, from back when I did the 'Plumb v. Plomb per Paschall' mythbusting.

Thanks Lugz..That's a little bit deeper dive than I would have done. I'm nowhere near where I have it stored but I recall that it didn't strike me as being any smaller than the later 1430's, so...probably 29. I'm assuming manufactured just prior to the market crash and because of the added 1430 stamp maybe not sold to initial user until sometime after.

I found some kind of unusual pieces at sales today. An S.R. 3/4” flex socket and my first ball pein hammer. I think the hammer is from 1935.

While we are on the subject of 1430s. Here is my 1430 Plomb beside the one my Grand dad bought and used in our family owned auto parts store for 40 years. It was used in the shop where they installed mufflers and wheels and tires. After the store was sold in 86, it followed my dad to home, then Seattle for 20 years, now is back here at home. Still hanging on his peg board and used regularly while building the model A's. If you look closely you can still see little bits of the original green paint on the well worn handle.

RAG: nice story about the well traveled (and well used) old hammer!! my old eyes couldn't see any green on the handle, but i'll take your word for it.

wouldn't it be great if these old tools could tell the stories they've heard and experienced?

ALL: hope you all find your PLVMB today, and if not maybe something else or just rest up for a good week.

Coincidentally, I've been trying to do some more research on S.R. marked tools this morning and jumped over here to jog my memory on a couple things related to the possible Sturtevant Richmont connection. Will report back if I come up with anything worth mentioning.
EDIT: BTW, Lugz...I do recall your point on the problem with the Sturtevant Richmont connection due to the merger date issue. I'm working on a different angle.

Totally agreed! Another one will surface any time now. I know on eBay a few years ago there was a proto la wood advertising sign that was the proto flying lady logo. I have never seen another since. Anyone on here have one?

Glad they meet your satisfaction, Roy! I'll certainly be on the lookout for more now. I enjoy having a "mission" when dragging pawn shop bins, resale shops and garage sales.

I appreciate you educating me a little on these.

I bought these through Offerup in bmwrd0's backyard late last week. They had been listed for days when I noticed them because they were outside my normal search area. The seller had taken them to the wire wheel on a bench grinder, but left the red rust in the box ends. Sad to see the abuse of the top two :( but it was a package deal and big wrenches like this don't turn up often. Most have owners marks AND a spot of weld for identification. The Pebble escaped the crazed welder! :bounce:
