I owe a thank you to outofbounds for posting the Walla Walla Plomb sale link, and for Smokeshow69 for emphasizing it.

This is off Plomb subject, but came from it.

I clicked on the link. Walla Walla: within driving distance, but not worth it for a Plomb box with a bit of misc. But, while I'm on craigslist, check there to see if anything else in Walla Walla to sweeten the deal. I click on tools, and first up, just posted is an ad for 2 lathes, 2 mills and tooling for $1500. Telephone #, so I call immediately. Talk for a bit, this is the real deal, retired machinist, needs shop cleaned out NOW for immediate house sale offer. Will give me $300 off if I can come get it immediately. So, I hook up car hauler and 8 hour drive today, plus 2 hours loading and rigging. Nice Logan lathe with quick change gearbox, decent taiwan mill with new set of R8's, screw cutting small craftsman lathe with gears and tooling, and a bridgeport for parts (part of it). Here's the trigger photo from the Plomb ad, and a picture of the tooling that came with the lot. No pictures of the machines, still on trailer in the dark.

It was too late coming home to swing through Walla Walla and pick up the Plomb, so it's still at large.
Nice!
I was gonna message you about the Plomb box but didn't want to be a bad influence as I know you are trying to downsize. I seen it has a short 3/4" extension I need to finish a set. Hit me up if anyone has a spare. Part number 5660.

As I started to gather pieces for this 1/4” drive master set, a problem I’ve experienced before with Plomb speeders came up again. I had a perfectly nice 1/4” drive 4780 speeder that didn’t fit properly in the 5295 box, so I overspent a little and picked up another 4780 that fit the box perfectly. Mrbill, Lugz and I all ran across this problem of speeders not fitting certain boxes when we were putting together 3/8” drive sets.

I have the exact same box marked P&C, and I have yet to find a P&C speeder with the correct bends to fit in the box.

But, I also have a pre-war box, and it is the only one that will fit my 5482. The wartime or later boxes have too narrow a slot for the anvil of the speeder.

Well you guys are a horrible influence and I say keep it up[emoji23] I made an offensive offer on that plomb top chest in Vancouver and the seller countered at $45 down from $60... I couldn’t say no[emoji849][emoji849][emoji6]. The chest has been spray bombed outside and on the drawer faces but bottoms and the inside of the drawers looks good. The drawers are really straight and I figured if needed I could use it for parts. I have seen the small side drawers sell for more than this on eBay. A couple of the hinges have been rewelded or replaced but for the price I am not complaining . Looks like the stickers got sprayed right over.

I am glad you picked that up Smoke!

Thanks for the heads up! It sat for over a week so I had time this weekend! It has no rust and is pretty straight. I would be a good cleanup project for later. I like how this one has the embossed lid and scallop pull handles. What year is this? Corners are slightly rounded

Try some SG soaked paper towel (with saran wrap over it to stop evaporation) to take the rattle can paint off. You got nothing to lose.

I am working on a great flower bed collection [emoji23] that is just a portion of my plomb/ Proto collection... my craftsman collection is about 3 times that size

Catalogue shots of my 9998... all these are showing the d ring handles for the war time or post catalogs I have checked so far...I need to check the last few printed catalogs I have but I don’t have that many actually and am wondering what date this one is? I prefer the scallop handles to the d rings my self...
Adjustments.jpg

My printed catalogs- wartime but I am not sure of the year- shows d rings

1947 and 1948- Proto/ plomb...show d rings but the small drawers are also swapped to the right side of the chest?

I am guessing mine is pre war?

Any chance of saving the sticker in legible condition at that point?

No not really! I was just showing the lack of prep work before being sprayed with paint. I think a kid may have done it based on the odd color assortment and lack of complete work. I really hope it can be cleaned off to show the olive green wrinkle finish inside

So I picked up the box, the lower one in the picture. The top box in the picture is the common 4795 box, for size comparison.
The box I'm asking is the lower one. It measures 2" by 8" by 1¼" deep.
I looked through some catalogs, didn't see any reference to a box of these dimensions, but I suspect it's the Challenger 5292 box. Can anyone confirm?

I think Bmwrd0 has one of those boxes? Maybe he can shed some light?

The interior of the box shows virtually no wear. I would expect to see traces of the Challenger label inside. I would check to see how the pieces listed in the set fit in the box. It certainly matches the description.

I have the same box, which I purchased empty. After asking around here, I decided it was the challenger box and filled it with the challenger bits. The crazy part is, mine has the same markings as yours on the lid! There was some discussion about what it meant, but no conclusions were reached. Boing Air Craft was floated as a possibility. Now that there are two, I know it wasn’t the guys initials or his record high blood alcohol content or something. Mine came out of San Jose CA which may or may not be a clue. Very interesting...

Yeah, it looks like the same box as mine. As far as the BAC, there was a generic toolbox for sale up in Seattle recently with the same BAC stenciled on the outside and the ad said it was an old Boeing box. So, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised that Boeing ordered them en mass, and that is why there is no label inside. Just a guess though.

That's what I was thinking too, maybe Boeing during the War time. My box came with some 1/4" drive sockets, also marked BAC, but obviously not original to the box.

That would make sense, maybe part of a larger order, especially to an aircraft maker during the War. My box came from a seller that is near Seattle.

This 3/8” drive socket arrived today from an eBay seller. The set screw is a bit of a mystery.
