A late entry from Memorial Day weekend...

I've been trying to track down a 4795 Case since pulling an almost-complete set of 1/4 drive sockets out of a mixed box several months and multiple states back. Whilst sorting through a huge and rusty pile of sockets at the annual St. Regis Fleamarket, I struck up a conversation with the proprietor in the course of which, I mentioned my search for Plvmb cases. Much to my surprise, he had one although he couldn't remember what size. Even worse, after a long search through his cargo trailer, he determined he had left it at home... which just so happened to be in another state! A bit bummed but undissuaded, we began scratching our respective heads and fundaments in an effort to get cash from my pocket into his hand and a tool case from his house into my truck. Eventually, he called his wife who agreed to "try" to find the case, and bring it over the next afternoon, a drive of at least 2 hours each way. I left his booth that night wondering if this was all a waste of time, but still more than a little intrigued by the possibilities.

The following morning I meandered my way through the remainder of the fleamarket and, after determining that it was almost entirely comprised of knick-knacks and antique "decorator" stuff that interested me not at all, I killed a few hours before completely running out of patience and making my way back over to the appointed location.

I pulled in just as his wife was getting in the car to head home so I was able to profusely thank her... and $5 later, it was mine.

Here are some "as bought" pictures and some after a good cleaning. Clearly, it was spray-bombed at some point so eventually, I'll give it a full restore.

The 4766 1/4 Hinge Handle was thrown in to sweeten the deal. Oddly enough, whoever welded the -v- Craftsman allen key to it, managed to completely miss the retention ball which still works perfectly. Here in the near future I'll get it back up and running...

TL/DR: Pulled a 4795 from across state lines for small pesos...

Best regards, all!
John

Why would a seller have his wife drive a box 4 hours round trip for $5? She spent 10x that in gas. :headscrat
I would surmise an additional, undeclared purpose for the trip. Aside from a conjugal visit, which we may dismiss as unlikely if 4570 nearly missed meeting her (despite arriving prior to the appointed time), perhaps the seller wanted or needed something else that he had left at home. Alternately, perhaps she is suspicious of his overnight excursions and the company he keeps, and wanted to check up on him. We may never know.

Lugs and LesserSon, I quite frankly have no idea about another person's motivations, missions, or marriages. Having enjoyed one of my own (a marriage, that is) for a couple decades, I can truthfully declare that the mind of my Wife is hers and hers alone. In the case (fortuitous double meaning) of this gentleman's wife, my understanding is that she was already planning a trip over to visit her husband. That being said, my appreciation for her finding and delivering the Plvmb case far outweighs any speculations of potentialities and thus, I will enjoy the fruit of her drive without further conjecture.

I picked up this 8182 DBE today at the flea.

(Catfish Dan - PM me if you haven't found one yet. As you may recall I have a complete 81xx set. This is a dupe.)

I had never laid eyes on an "SR" marked tool until we landed in the PNW... seems I run into them semi-regularly now 'though always sockets.

That SR ratchet looks quite similar to the WF offering from Plomb based on handle and faceplate shape/orientation/etc.

It's definitely an interesting one, Rags... Thanks for sharing.

The "[S.R.]" production discussion goes way back, John. It has come up before many times right here on this thread if you want to try your hand at the search engine. And also as the subject (or tangential subject) of separate threads. Couple links here and here.
Thank you once again, Professor! As a relative newcomer to the site, it is always interesting to get a peek through the “way back” machine… which is an overly-wordy way of saying thank you for the links! They definitely provide interesting reading.

Not only is Lugz "The Man" when it comes to tool research and the like. But, he also has a memory unlike anyone I have ever met! Also Lugz, I was thinking, if it might be that S.R. if for the Sturdevant Richmont Company as previously brought up. Could we just call them up and ask ? There's a number on their website. I'm calling tomorrow!
You have way more SR than I do. With help, I have added a few lately.

I like them! A few from GJ have sent me some and I found a good pile here at the flea to get me started a couple years ago. It seems they are found all over the country. So not just a small contract job I would think..... and I wonder if the ratchet does go along with them..

so doing some googling.. and this came up.. interesting.. S.R. Dresser Manufacturing Co.

Torque wrench - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Torque_wrench

A torque wrench is a tool used to apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a nut, bolt, or lag ... Bahr's partner, Pfefferle, was an engineer for S.R. Dresser Manufacturing Co and held several patents. ... Tools should be marked with their torque range and the unit of torque as well as the direction of operation for ...

In 1950 the company moved to Dallas to be in the middle of the gas and oil industry! Maybe,,, they had their tools contracted by Plomb, who did have a factory in Dallas around war time as per a lot of the catalogs.

So RT your theory is that the S.R. marked tools were made for Dresser? Not clear if the "S.R." part stuck after its going public in 1928. It may have? :dunno:

Well I mean maybe? Hah I was googling and stuff and thought I wonder if this huge company that works in the gas and oil industry had their own tools made for them. They were in close proximity if the Dallas Plomb factory if it was indeed still there in 1950 and may have made a deal to have thier comoany issued tools made by them. Just a vague theory.

I hit up a large swap meet on friday with BMW, Provincial and Oregon Rock Crusher...I did find some plomb but not as much as I normally find. I found a ton of Proto that I will post in the Proto thread. I also did find a small soft tip faced hammer that turned out to be plomb. I thought it was proto at the time of photos so it is with the proto photos :) The highlight of the plomb lot was this super cool valve spring compressor tester. I also found a few spare dual marked wrenches as well! I met up with provincial after the meet and pulled a few pieces out of his stash including the 1/2 drive box and a dual marked 10" adjustable wrench as well as a few others.

Nice haul from the swap Smoke. Love that valve spring tester and it looks to be in fantastic condition. Hope this heat wave clears out before the next meet.....make digging into the treasure piles a lot more comfortable.

Thanks Ed! That valve spring tester is way cool... I know they have existed for some time but have never round a plomb one in the wild! It has a really cool art deco shape to it and is in good shape. It is made by Sturtevant which is the same company that made plomb's torque wrenches. In terms of the heat, yeah I really hope it dies down a bit. I don't mind warmer temps but this is getting a bit warm even for me :)

We have had some roasters down here. Was 118 for like a week. Settled down to the 100 to 110 range now. Has put a hold on most of my projects.

Don't you hate it when the paint spray dries before it hits the surface?
Totally ! That is the worst. I put down a protective coat of spar varnish on that tool board I picked up and I had to take it outside to paint it yesterday.....I would run outside and shoot it real quick and then bring it back inside where it was cooler so it could dry off :) I also had to keep the varnish inside so it wouldn't get to hot.

Use beer can insulated sleeves with open-cell foam so the water cools the can and contents as it evaporates! Just like those canvas water bags they hung from the radiator cap in the old days.
