I found a Plomb #3425 1/2 x 7/16 tappet wrench at a garage sale today. It's not plated, and has a date code that appears to be BC. The price was 50 cents.

I found 2 4710-S (5/16 8 Point) sockets in the same bucket at a flea in Ohio last month... both War Finish.

These two brought my total count of War Finish tools to 3 out of over 600 total Plvmb pieces.

I have a couple of 1/4” drive sets with some war finish marked tools. I haven’t run across many 4708-S sockets lately either War Finish marked or regular.

Resurrecting the Proto 5449 D mystery. These three came together in one box from a sale. I realize just because they were together does not necessarily mean they are related. All have traces of olive drab paint on them.

Another 5449 D Crank Handle.

A 5449 D4 ratchet, 10 inches long.

3282 (I think) cast steel double ended socket type wrench. Looks unused, openings are 15/16 and 1 3/8. A hole on the side at each end for a tommy bar?

A few recent Plomb arrivals. The WF-102 came in a Duro ignition wrench set. It’s available if anyone needs it.
These will be upgrades for some sets. It was over 90 degrees today so I sprayed some wrinkle finish on some boxes. Here is the well used Plomb box.

From a current bay auction.....What's going on with this breaker? So the handle end doesn't look Plomb... I guess someone could have milled that last 3/4" of knurled end down but the fork end shape doesn't look right either.

Maybe that’s a ‘39 date code? I would definitely say that the handle has been milled down. I have quite a few 4766 examples and have never seen one like that.

Yes, looks like a 39. What about the fork? doesn't have the normal parallel look, kind of a stylized slant inwards like some duro or other brands. It's no big deal, maybe it's common, just looks odd to me.

I’ll check to see if I have one from that period in an early set. It might just be the camera angle. Here is another screenshot. It looks as if both ends of the knurled area may have been milled.

It looks like the 1939 4766 in the eBay listing is unmolested. I checked the one in my prewar set and it was exactly the same. My memory certainly isn’t what it once was.

There is more than a passing resemblance. Is it possible that Plomb was buying them from Duro in 1939? Probably just coincidence with the crossbar holes in different locations.

Only Plomb collectors or the most persistent, patient, onesie-twosie collectors of any brand of tools in the wild would appreciate the joy I had this morning.

The two innocuous bits attached to the drive studs of the two identical Williams M-42 hinge handles shown in this photo...



...were plucked out of a drawer of a huge head-high red stack, exactly as they are shown.

A Plomb 4846 SIZE 3 (3/8") slot tip and a CAL-AIR No. 3 Phillips. I have ZERO doubt that Plomb was CAL-AIR's source.

The hinge handles and the bits are all cadmium plated and all 9/32-inch drive.

Searching the thread on CAL-AIR and finding nothing but two other bits and lots of questions, I did some research.

California Air Charter was formed in 1946, immediately after WWII, and was one of several so-called "nonsked" or Irregular Air Carriers. Here's a set 9/32 drive set of no. 1, 2 and 3 phillips screw bits. The 1 is deco, 2 and 3 cal air. Did plomb make them?

I don't know about the Deco, but I am fairly confident about the CAL-AIR. The best way to be more conclusive would be to directly compare them, which I am unable to do. My slot tips are all Plomb branded 48xx series, and my Phillips are both CAL-AIR.
