Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

In these pics is an older puller box found at an estate I helped clean out. Some of the puller parts are dated as early as 1930 and use the old part numbers. It also had the retaining clips with it.
PlombLA010.jpg
PlombLA009.jpg

Some tapped wrenches and a dodge brake wrench (KDB)
PlombLA011.jpg

Some 1/2 deep sockets. I believe the 25/32nds is a fairly uncommon size in the deep. Also, an older style 1/2 deep socket as well
PlombLA012.jpg

Some 3/8s drive stuff the shortest extension is pretty rare from what I've seen as well as the weatherhead socket.
PlombLA013.jpg

Early 3/4 drive items
PlombLA014.jpg

Some old punches and easy outs. I think it's interesting that on the easy outs they are both marked patent pending, but their date codes put them 7 years apart in production. Guess the government was slow even back then!!!

Last one for my LA items -
The top scredriver is just marked "Plomb" probably from the 20's. Two breaker bars, one is the DH series

Thanks for taking the time to look!

It seems that sockets from the LA period are pretty scarce.

Johnny - PM me your wanted list and I'll keep an eye out in my searches.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

During a Plomb transaction a couple years ago with a fellow member, we discussed the "burn stripes" sometimes seen on some Plomb pebble wrenches. We thought it may have occurred during the manufacturing process, but also thought it could have been some kind of owner mark.

Here's a good example of the marks on the 15/16" wrench from a picture I borrowed from someone's ebay sale.

View attachment 299924

I stumbled upon this today: https://www.google.com/patents/US2541597 .
It's a patent for an electroplating rack where the original assignee is the Plomb Tool Company. It seems that it was the rack that had interfered with the electroplating process of the wrench where it sat in the rack.

View attachment 299925

Not many of the Plomb pebble wrnches have these marks, but if you've ever seen these marks on your wrenches and wondered where they came from, this is the likely cause.

So there it is, my bit of useless Plomb trivia for the day.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands. LOL!

I have them on brand new stahlwille wrenches

Thanks for posting that Franklee - I've seen that on plenty of wrenches. Usually they seem to be on transitional/early proto LA stuff as well.

Bought this Plomb torque wrench at a swap meet yesterday. Was absolutely caked with old oil - I initially thought it was an early Proto. All I have done is degrease it - I guess all the decades of accumulated oil preserved the finish nicely. I especially like the dual drive plugs and torque scales so it can be used upside down.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I outgrew my Plomb drawer last weekend so it seemed like a good time to take some family photos!

I found about 80 pieces on saturday and sunday and a new box as well. The seller bought the box empty but he got a bunch of Plomb stuff with an old US Navy tool box he had.

Interesting that the box model# is still written on the side…..

The adjustable wrench looks like it may have had painted recesses at one time.

Does anyone know how many factories made Plomb tools? Here are 4 examples of a #1126 wrench. Bottom one is marked Plomb Los Angeles, above that is marked Plomb LA. The top two are similar but the text is different when viewed closely (sorry for the bad pics).

IMG_6230.jpg

Similar variations in some of my sockets

IMG_6236.jpg

These are the only 2 sockets I have with the 4 ring design…

IMG_6253.jpg

I only have 2 of this style as well…

Is the "USS" here a military label?

Hope you enjoy the photos. I am open to trades or sales for my duplicates if anyone is interested. -Rusty

Rusty, the 1/2 USS stamping indicates that the wrench fits a standard USS-size heavy hex nut. The (7/8) is the opening hex size. It is not a military identification.

Nice collection! You guys nearer the population centers have more to pick over!

I found another Plomb box last night very similar to my red one but slightly different and I am guessing - older - although I suspect someone else here can educate me.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I was doing some tinkering and brought out these 1/2" Plombs. I realized there are some variations in the back plates (the Craftsman and female Plomb have countersink screws). One ratchet has figure 8 cover plates as opposed to oval.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Hello. I am hoping you all can help me shed some light on a Plomb Plvmb toolmobile I acquired recently. It does not appear to be a Pressweld / Pressteel made unit, which is the odd part. The corners aren't rounded and the drawer configuration is different than what I am familiar with.

The Plvmb logo is embossed on the sides and on the bottom drawer. It has friction drawer slides. Unfortunately, someone painted it in red oxide primer, but the original red is visible on the inside. Anyone seen this style before or know anything? I wish had more Plvmb to put in it...

I dug out a couple of PLOMBS today. One little T- bar. And one not so common Ranger wrench. Glad I found this wrench again. It's been MIA for years but I knew it was here somewhere.

Hey Steven, The PLVMB Toolmobile is coming along:thumb up:
It was the nastiest, dirtiest, greasiest thing I have ever cleaned. I found a serial No 1647 on the top left corner. I took most of it down to bare metal. I sorted the wheels out too.

I need PLVMB Los Angeles wrenches and sockets know:)

Johnny - That's looking great. Those casters look much newer but the style is very similar to the original. I'll try to snap some pics of the original Bassick Casters that came on my other tool mobile.

Be sure to post pics when you finish!

Nice Toolmobile johnnybentwrench! Also nice work! If you are looking to restore yours as original as possible and need measurements of the grey stripe thickness I can help you out. I suppose I could even try and make some cardboard templates of my dividers and divider holders if you want to take the time to reproduce them. Here are some pictures of the one I inherited from my grandfather. It's all original with the original wheels, dividers, sliding tray, lock/ locking bar, and key! I almost get tempted to strip and repaint mine so it looks new but the patina is kind of cool too, and like they say it's only original once so I'm probably better off keeping it the way it is as a "survivor."

Sorry if this is too picture heavy and the semi double post in the vintage toolboxes thread but I thought it might belong in both places.

Ford man - your toolmobile is AMAZING. I know I've said it before in past threads. Don't ever repaint that guy! It still looks great and is only original once!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I just picked up a handful of non-pebble DOE wrenches at a flea market. Since several were completely encrusted in rust (could barely read 'em), I let them soak in white vinegar for a while, brushed them lightly by hand (gloves!) while they were completely submerged in vinegar (no Cad dust that way), rinsed them a bit with washing soda/dish soap/water, and then dried them and applied Johnson Paste Wax. One of them is clearly not Cad plated or bare steel, but the others I'm not sure about. For future reference, does anyone have a picture of tools that they know have each of the three finishes?
