One of the best box restorations I have ever seen!! I like how you restored the outside but left the original inside! Came out very nice!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Hello guys I got this the other day and I was going to use it but I since found it that it is a pretty rare so I cleaned it up and I believe it counts as both plomb and proto at the same time.

I might even sell it.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

That's a great box. Nice find. Looks like an older one with the squared off corners. Probably late 30's at the latest. Looks like it's missing the removable tray.

One of these days I'm going to get around to actually making some reproduction water slide decals for the Plomb logo inside the boxes.

Here are a few sample images my buddy and I have drawn up for tshirt/decal ideas - these were all taken from old catalogs/decals that were macro photographed and retouched in photoshop so resolution/clarity in the finished product won't be an issue.

Gonna try to start making them soon.

Anyone know if there is an update on the shirts? I would buy 3 right now if available!

Hey - sorry to keep pushing this back and back. I'm still here. And the projects are still in the works. Life has just been crazy. Job switches, moving, new children, etc...

As soon as I have the first batches in I'll get a thread going on here.

Thanks!:rocker:

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Even the vise? ;) Good stuff man  I like the green on the breaker bar for some reason.

Well worst case looks like it would double as a great weapon.

Thanks zkling, no the vise is a low end Wilton, I just finished putting lipstick on it and didn't want to move it till the paint fully dried hard.

I too like the green breaker bar, it's one of my favorites but only gets used on a blue moon.

Question: Was the green painted on the breaker bar done by Plomb or by some user ?

bodyguy16 - 1429 is a Turret Top Pecking Hammer. IMO it's the holy grail of body hammers. Should have a handle that is about 22" long. I think they are worth about $100. I'd like to see more pictures of the hammer you fixed up. How long is the spare handle?

I have lots of old ratchets, rangeing from female drive Craftsman (H) to indestro and others. Wanting to trade for Plomb tools. Is it ok to offer to trade on this web site?

No picture, but I picked up a Plvmb pebble 9/16" combination wrench at a swap meet yesterday for $1. It's a little rusty but otherwise in decent shape. I just don't see them very often in this part of the country.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

The paint is definitley not "factory"....

Thanks Copilot,

I thought the same but after seeing the green painted hammer handles above and I also have acquired some other plumb/proto from a different aerospace source also having the same green paint in the handle area that it got me start to think just maybe it was; hence the question.

Cheers

I just measured the 1429 and the handle on it measures just under 15 inches, avg replacement handle lenght but good news is i only paid 28$ for it last year ! Ill try to post some more pics of the 1416 tomorrow. Lastly the replacement handle is stamped 1421 and if i remember correctly measures about 13-14 inches

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Hello hello,

Just picked this up yesterday, but I can't find any info on it. it's about 18" long and 1 1/8" wide at the blade. I think it might be an older piece because of the circular "O" but I don't know. Anybody have any idea how much it's worth? Thanks!!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

So, I recently picked up my first Plomb tool. I've had Proto stuff prior, and still do, but I've never had Plomb. Here's my 3734, 1 1/16" flare nut wrench. It's awesome, and I'm assuming I'll never have a need for it. I'm guessing the prior owner didn't use it much, as well; looks relatively new. Here are some pics.

And here's a comparison to a Bonney. It makes the Bonney look like an ugly duckling.

Oh, and I bought it with this Proto box.

That wrench doesn't even like it has fingerprints on it. Great shape. I love those small metal cases too. Nice scores.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

So, how are the Plvmb ratchets, honestly? Serviceable, or just a good looking piece of steel? Can the inner workings be updated to finer or more teeth? I'd hate to buy a ratchet just for aesthetics. I've always been a form, and function type of guy.

They're just as good as the Proto version.

The Plomb pear heads came in two styles--round knurled handle (early), or pebble-finish handle (late) like the one on the flare-nut wrench you just got. The knurled part of the early handle is smaller diameter than the Proto knurled handle. Which one people like best is a matter of opinion.

From my experience, Plomb/Proto pear head ratchets rarely need anything but cleaning and lubing to be completely serviceable.

No. Honestly, they work fine the way they are, unless you're working in really tight quarters where you're barely able to move the handle.

If you're someone who only uses fine-tooth ratchets, you probably won't like them.

Some of us who have been using Plomb/Proto pear head ratchets for years think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I've got a couple of fine-tooth ratchets, but I only use them in tight quarters. The rest of the time, I reach for a Plomb/Proto pear head or my old Snap-Ons, (which are also not fine-tooth ratchets).

That box is for the 3/8" drive 10 piece hex bit set.

The set number decal is in impressive condition. Usually when the boxes are as worn as that one is, the decal is toast--peeling around the edges and so on.

Yeah, this box is actually rather well preserved. It looks better in person; even the inside is still intact. Usually the inside "walls" seem to grow legs. Here's a shot.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

my first post on this thread and i'm sure i'll post a few more since i'm dreaming of all the Plumb tools filling up my tool boxes now.

less than a year ago i didn't know Plumb or Proto tools existed or just didn't pay much mind to owning them. now that I've been on GJ my tool collection and use has grown substantially. here is the biggest and smallest Plumb tools i own now.

first is a little end wrench that almost looks like it was cast and my one inch ratchet that also has some sockets i'll post later.

Does anyone use a buffing wheel to clean up your tools? Mine have some slight surface rust and was thinking of using a Brillo pad and then a buffing wheel after that.
