Picked up this early LA example of a 3018. All other early examples I had very 40 or 41. I cannot remember these in the early catalogs so may be a 38 or 39.

It also this weird forge mark on the center of the beam and near the one head.

Some early Plomb had cosmetic flaws. They were transitioning from a home-grown local brand into a regional, mainstream one. The quality (fit and durability) was there, but the finish improved pretty rapidly.

Which is to be expected, since it's 1/4-inch drive (vs. 9/32-inch drive), no?

I find the concept and the photo kind of ironic and iconic at the same time.

I'll elaborate.

Snap-on didn't routinely make a 1/4-inch drive version (TM-3) of the M-3 (9/32-ich drive) Tee handle. When the full 1/4-drive TM- stuff was introduced in the 1945 catalog, it was dropped. Last seen in a catalog in 1942. There is, as I recall, an example of a TM-3 with a 1949 date stamp on the SO thread, but it's considered a special/anomaly.

Plomb, quite conversely, didn't routinely make a Tee handle, not for the regular commercial 1/4-inch drive 47xx sets or for the Plomb 9/32-inch drive WF- sets.

My point is that the rare Plomb "Allison Engines" sets (or whatever we're calling them) represent a weird juncture in the vintage tools universe where one major mfgr (Plomb) was ostensibly doing something very unusual (producing a handle it had never before manufactured!), while the other major mfgr (Snap-on), which had since 1920 routinely produced one as a staple handle in its line of midget drive set offerings, was in the process of discontinuing it!

For that reason alone it's an interesting notion by @MR.X - "Hello, Joe? Morris here. How are you? That's great. Listen, let's talk about those tee handles you make..." - but the features are not wholly convincing. The bends in the loop handle is a classic standard shape for tee handles, since the days of fixed socket wrenches. I am not sure the shape or the knurling on the rotating handle is enough to do anything with, either. The approach of the shank to the drive stud is different and the detent balls are not staked the same. The two stops for the rotating handle are intriguing. Kind of a SO thing. They started going internal on some tools.

A neat thought experiment, though. Call me open-mindedly skeptical and willing to see more.

Not sure what you mean by "versions," OTG, but the drive size matters. Unless I'm mistaken, I think your statement simultaneously and somewhat misleadingly belies the rarity of a few of them and too modestly understates your own collection! :)

Again, my impression is that Plomb is not at all known for making any, in any drive size, except and only for a very brief time, the 1/4-drive jobbie in your AE set. That's why it's so unusual.

I've seen the Walden.

Not sure I was aware of/recall the NB. Is it 1/4- or 9/32-drive?

I'm assuming the Snap-on, the most common, is 9/32-drive.

When I said I was skeptical, I meant of the implicit premise of @MR.X 's intriguing suggestion that Snap-on may have been making them for Plomb, explicitly for the AE kits, as discussed in the previous part of my post, a suggestion with a lot of interesting merit based solely on the complete lack of precedence by Plomb in making them prior to that.

When I said that I was willing to see more, I didn't mean other midget Tee handles. I have seen plenty and I have a few myself - all 9/32-inch drive. I meant more analysis and discussion of the construction features and characteristics of a Snap-on M-3 (9/32-inch drive) Tee handle compared to the 1/4-inch drive Tee handle that Plomb was conspicuously putting in these EA kits.

The new britain is 1/4". There maybe some other brands but those are the ones I have seen. The snapon 1/4" version is pretty scarce. I can only guess the plomb was for a military kit, never meant for sale to the public.

I hear you there. Early snap on is pretty common her for some reason at least the overstrike 1/2" and 5/8" drive sockets. I don't think most people know the old logo.

:). The ratchets are definitely harder to come by because they say Snap On but sockets are decently common but sometimes not in the greatest condition
