Here is a kind of unusual thin (tappet wrench?) 7/16" x 1/2" open end wrench.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Just scored this Plomb Toolmobile last week and it was very complete except for the lock key and some drawer dividers. These things weigh about 150lbs and are heavy gauge steel - but someone managed to put a long flat spot in one of the rounded corners. Don't know how I'm going to fit that yet as I'm not a body man. I'm either going to paint this myself or send it out for powder coating. Before the Toolmobile, I snagged this Proto Chest. It has amazing rounded corners that are flush with all sides of the Chest - a little different than the one Plomb had out. My collection of Plomb and Proto tools is small right now as I just started last year. I needed more tools and another roller like a hole in my head but I just can't help myself - the designs and workmanship were so cool back in the day. The Green SK box was another recent restoration I did.

My latest bit of Plomb, 5249 pebble 3/8 ratchet, been after one of these (and a firestone version which still eludes me) for a while.

4qm3zTMl.jpg

This one needs a bit of repair as the pawls are worn, though oddly not where I would expect them to be worn, its hard to see in the picture but the small pin on the end that locates them isn't sitting in the hole properly, so the pawls move around when its used, which has in turn worn the pins more.

8l9wjiHl.jpg

I'm wondering if this has kit in the past and the replacement parts weren't quite right as the pawls seem slightly too narrow and i can't see them having worn that much?, the back plate was slightly bent as well, have straightened it but didn't help much.

I know the proto kit fits these, but going to attempt to repair these first by carefully building them up with weld and grinding/filing them to size, if it doesn't work at least i can get replacements fairly easily (although i couldn't find any kits on ebay) also going to make up a shim for the gear from brass or similar to take up the movement in it, as it has worn the backplate slightly, will post up some pics if it works

Nice pick up on the tool mobile and the proto box. To me it looks like the tool mobile may have enough original paint to just wash and wax it ?? May not need a repaint?? The proto box is really nice to! I picked one of the proto boxes up recently and I use it for tool storage in the house! They sure new how to build them back then:thumbup: Nice resto on the sk box to!

Gotta say, I'm in accord with Smokeshow regarding the refinish on the Tool Mobile.... But refinished or not, I'm envious! :D

Nice score on the Proto box Emeraldcoup - I paid a whole lot more for mine but like you, still happy with my score cause they are not making these anymore. The Toolmobile is going to have to wait for its turn - too many other projects ahead of it and I would be lucky to see it finished by summer. Nice Mustang you got there, I always wanted one of the classics. I still think of an old buddy of mine who had a backyard full of fastbacks he collected but I don't think he ever did anything with them. I'm just glad I kept my 78 Ranchero that I bought new. Wish I kept my 70 Cuda though - long gone...

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

My first post here, found this board in a google search. A lot of neat info here.

I like Proto. When I was in my 20's and worked as a mechanic, all the old timers had massive proto collections, much like the matco and mac and snap on prestige sets that professionals flaunt today. I had a bunch of mismatched SK, P&C, Indestro, Wright, Williams, Proto, and Craftsman stuff, and envied the old timers. So, now I've accumulated much of the same. Many of my everyday users are Proto. Here's a few photo's:

Combination and regular and offset double box set on the wall over my workbench for use.

1/4, 3/8, 1/2" drive sockets in SAE

3/4" drive up to about 2 1/2"

pvP9Bo.jpg

oLyRCG.jpg

User wrenches in SAE

PKD7UE.jpg

kg5TyX.jpg

Metrics, don't have as many proto, started on them later and bought a lot of user snap on instead. A lot of these sockets are out on the worktable, putting together an engine right now.

zUjd6l.jpg

siSj0R.jpg

Boxes from sets

Extras

Did I mention I like proto? I've got a lot of other proto stuff mixed in with all my tools: pliers, drivers, ratchets, breakers, extensions, adjusable wrenches, pullers, bars, chisels, scrapers, etc, etc, etc.

When I get enough posts to use the classifieds, I'll post some trades. I have a lot of extra proto, and quite a lot of plumb. Rather trade it here than ebay it.

Found a Plomb 5249 ratchet today for $1 to compare to my Proto Professional. I was looking at a pile of ratchets and the guy running the yard sale says, "If you like nice tools, you won't find anything good in there, those are all junk. When I picked it, the guy was surprised and asked why I wanted it. 5849d7db75c66dd89bff32815b669397.jpg

Nice find :D looks in great shape too, i recently got one, cost me a lot more then $1 though :lol_hitti

Nice ratchets to use though, once i fixed the pawls on mine its super smooth considering its only 24 tooth, ok the head is quite big compared to modern ones or even the likes of the snap on f70n, but hey its at least 65 years old...

Sadly that's how some people think these days new = nice, and anything old is junk :( at least it means there are bargains to be had.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I think he was thinking that anything not branded Snap On was junk. When I first arrived, he said, "feel free to look around. A lot of the tools are as little as $1, unless it's Snap On (chuckles), then we'll talk." What was odd was that he didn't include Blue Point in that exception. I bought several Blue Point and Mac bcc and tools and he didn't bat an eyelash. I ending up getting about 20 hand tools from Snap On, Blue Point, Mac, and this Plomb for $12. There was a ton of Williams there too. I'm pretty sure he thought they were junk as well.

I'm thinking of swapping the head with the less worn components of my Proto. I did a test fit and they fit great. The Plomb had a lot more play in the head than the Proto, but I like the more slender head and handle of the Plomb. With the Protos components in the Plomb, it seems to be the best configuration, but I don't know if that's frowned upon.08321108a6bebf7a6dacf9e0a9b3c522.jpg606eac18a0036c56af84fe8173c79a5f.jpg

Lucky you!

Around these parts Plomb Tools seem to have become second only to the Holy Grail in value.... I was at a swap meet the other day and a guy had three of the lawsuit "grind-off" combo wrenches.....5/8, 11/16, and a 3/4.... And wanted $15 apiece.

Needless to say I left them in his possession. ;^)

Got these today, the 6527 is a head light specialty wrench but I'm not sure about the 6529. Its double offset but looks like a shop job. Anyone have a catalog for this one?

016_3.jpg

017_3.jpg

Found my answer;
The 6529 has been altered, the large end is supposed to be straight out and is for later model ford head lights. The small end is for horn nuts.

Picked this rotating extension recently. No part numbers, only the Plomb name. 1st one I've seen although I've had other brands in the past.

That's a new one on me, Chopper. I don't even see it in any of the catalogs... Very cool find.

Here is a Wright Field 9/32" drive extension I picked up the other day. Unfortunately I don't have any other tools in that size.

I found an interesting Plomb 3/8" ratchet today going through my box of extra Plomb and Proto Stuff: It has both Plomb and Challenger Markings.

Here's pictures:

Some one swapped the cover plate on this one ^^^^. The challenger name came out long after they stopped making that style of ratchet. That ratchet feels real smoothe once you clean and lube the innards with super lube. I use one all the time. Still a good find though!

Hey that is some good stuff you don't see every day! I don't believe the catologues specifically list what models the pan socket is for but I do remember them describing it as a "goat getting job "

Thanks for looking.
Yep, a little screw can get somebody's goat for sure.

I was cross referencing that socket with Snap On and they made a couple versions of it too, later ones had a similar spring design. At the Collecting SO site they had a recessed blade oil pan socket (pre-spring design) in the 1929 catalog, doesn't say what vehicle model either, so 1929 or earlier.

Got a couple of new bits in the post from the USA

Early 4749 1/4 drive ratchet (still on the look out for a 4751, watching one on ebay at the moment...)

its in pretty good shape, internals are barely worn, and after adding oiling it works smoothly. has some deeper corrosion pitting on the head, so may well be restored in the near future.

GgOfNpkl.jpg

And a later 4714 1/4" drive 7/16ths drive socket which has a miss-strike on it and is missing the PL of Plomb

While trying to build out a set of sockets and smooth combination wrenches for one of my grandkids, I came across this tool box and had to have it even though I don't have much to fill it. It's in fairly decent shape though a little latch has been added so the front flap won't flop.

Yesterday, I picked up a little kit of 1/4" drive stuff including the tee bar and extension. It included sockets without maker ID marks, only the knurling and sizes upside down. Anybody recognize the maker by the style? The image shows 6, 8 and 12 point versions.
