Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

SH: my wife has the big "FREE" sign ready maybe even if i decide to take a few day vacation before i croak. i might have to give her access codes to GJ so she can PM you guys first. that's how i usually find the Plvmb sets too except i think i found a 3/4 inch socket set in one sale that i think i still own.

cheers,
D
"I think....." Ridiculous!

SH, No chance you've run across a 1/4" or 3/8" drive dual Plomb/Proto marked ratchet have you? We're not sure they exist but just gotta ask!

BTW, great stash you got there!

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Twertsy: you have no idea what my wife is capable of. i actually put a Free sign on some cool stuff i had to put in storage 30 years ago when a renter left my house in a hurry. old laws were 90 days and it was mine and i think there was a truck in there too. after i paid $100 per month for a year wondering what i was going to do with it when there wasn't Craigslist or auctions or computers or Ebay i actually put a free sign on the unit and it was gone that weekend. i wouldn't let anybody just take one item. i wasn't going to spend another dollar on the guy's stuff that i didn't need and little newspaper ads were not cheap and worse than Craigslist by far.

my wife witnessed it hence my statement because she has mentioned it every now and again. not that she doesn't need the money either because if i ever F up she's got a lot of Irish blood pumping throughout her body.

i know you didn't want a long speech, but you got one with your little post and I feel better. how's your wife with your stuff you are accumulating lately? or if you are single then you wouldn't understand what Stupid Hippie and i deal with on a daily or once in a while now basis.

Faisal: my Plvmb 1 inch ratchet has a Proto replacement part so i'm guessing Proto still might sell them. i remember you didn't like my Plvmb ratchet because it wasn't 100% original so is the Plvmb part on Ebay an original Plvmb part or a new Proto replacement?

here's the picture of my 1 inch Plvmb ratchet.

Twertsy: i'm hoping to have it all organized and maybe one of my 3 sons or son in laws might have some interest if i live long enough. currently they all would rather get on a computer or cell phone and get someone else to do the work.

Faisal: Mine works fine, but i heard Proto had replacements if I ever needed one for one of my many Plvmb ratchets.

good luck and let us know what you find out. also there is nothing cheap about buying a one inch ratchet so i'm guessing parts won't be either if you need some to fix it or get it working better.

The local proto dealer near me sells rebuild kits for ratchets from $5 for a 3/8" to $11 for a 1/2". If you are willing to give them the used internals they will warrantee them and give you the rebuild kit for free.

You pretty much just posted a picture of what I dream about at night when I am sleeping:beer: Some might dream of a tropical island or a pile of cash but I dream about piles of plvmb/proto tools and working on vintage American cars! Very nice collection and I couldn't help but notice a few dual marked items. I also used the second picture for my background wall paper on my computer at work:)

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Twertsy you paid a pretty penny for that collection of catalogs, I was eyeing them too! :rocker: That was a neat treasure trove of Plomb/Proto ephemera, glad it went to a true collector! Did the guy offer any sort of story along with that collection?

"If only paper could talk..."

I didn't actually answer your question; in my reading "PLOMB TOOL CO" existed until 1957, the only stipulation in the settlement was not using their name to advertise. In 1957, the stockholder's agreed to change the name to Pendleton Tool Co, so that was the last year of "Plomb" being used.

Hmm........somehow, I have missed that. Nothing from the seller regarding the history of that lot, but it was way too cool to pass up.

Vintage Plomb/Proto Catalogs, etc?

We NEED pics! (and scans too, if possible)

There weren't any newly discovered cats in the lot, the unique stuff in there was my primary reason for going after it.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I recently picked up a PLVMB "pry bar".
#4050 8, Made in USA, it's just shy of 31" long, 3/4" hex.
The ends are flat, 2 1/4" wide with a 5/16" hole in them.
I can't find any info on it. I have no idea how to post pictures or I would.
Can anyone give me any info on it's use ?

Stewed,

What you describe doesn't "ring any bells" with me... But of course photos would probably help get the tribe working on it.

The way I post photos is to store them on Photobucket, and when the little "insert image" button here on GJ asks you for a "URL" (Insert Image is the second-from-the-right icon just above the text box when you post a message) - you enter the address of the photo you posted on p-bucket.

Works for me! :^)

I'll get some help. Me and computers don't get along. It doesn't help that I'm computer illiterate.
Thanks for the picture posting advice.

My first navy production wrench found in the wild. I wonder the story that brought this wrench to the Midwest.

Nice sets Chopper!, this is one of the best threads.

Sweet pick up! Not to many of these around I imagine:bowdown: That is really old.

Thanks Smokeshow, I guess I need help with a date on this thing. I'm not sure I understand the system. Stamps are 4C and 5B. Maybe 1934-1935.

I was quite surprised by the box. It is very much like a simple jewelry box with the latch and hinges. One of my favorite tools is the larger version of this puller in Proto, so this had to come home with me.

Yes, '34 and '35. There are no other options for 3, 4, 5, and 6, they are always '33, '34, '35, and '36 respectively. (no date codes before '27 and none after '42)

NP 3bay, and nice set by the way! I have the big one in pebble form and a little one like yours but I like your case better. Mine has the triangle O in Plomb.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

I picked up this PLOMB tappet wrench over the weekend. I don't think I'd even recognize a tappet if it hit me in the face. While I am trying to fill in my smooth (not pebble) PLVMB combo set, I'll never need this one so I'm offering it up to serious PLVMB collectors who would value this thing.

I've only slightly cleaned it up to be able to see the lettering better.
U78 PLOMB (with a round O) 7 Los Angeles A

I'm going to post this in classifieds as a trade. I need a PLVMB 1226 -- 13/16" smooth combo.

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Chopper: it looks a bit crowded in that box so maybe you might consider shipping the duplicates to me. :D

one of these days i'll find one of those boxes that isn't $150-$300 in the wild.

ALL: so has Woody or somebody else started a thread about the relationships between Plvmb and P & C and Pennins (sp?)? i know Proto was the name Plvmb took after the lawsuit, but curious how the other names work in the equation. or are the other ones completely different companies?

We have a lot of tools in common. Just purchases two WF 3/8" ratchets for 2 bucks each. Plus a WF19K extension for I think 50 cents. Just purchase Plomb stuff. Its a curse.

Plomb bought P&C Tools in 1941. They continued to operate it as a subsidiary for a number of years. For more information on P&C look here: http://www.pnctools.com/
