A few more photos. I could use some advice on cleaning up the logo without destroying it.

Riley: WD 40 on a rag might clean it up some or at least get rid of the dirt and surface rust. if you use Simple Green be careful not to let it sit on the paint too long cause i hear it eats paint.

thanks for the pictures!!

Riley - I'd take a little piece of paper towel and dampen it a bit and see what effect that has on cleaning up that label. I would NOT put any kind of petroleum-based chemical on it (like WD40) and certainly not some cleaning compound as aggressive as "Simple Green".
The smudged, almost illegible label has far more intrinsic value than a label that got damaged or removed by attempting to clean it.

FOUR C: maybe you should start a VINTAGE SIGN restoration thread and let's get some more member's opinions and lots of pictures? i'd support it and i'm willing to learn more. i've had good luck with WD 40 removing the surface rust and so far it doesn't seem to have any ill effects on the toolboxes, cabinets and signs, but i'm not trying to sell them so i'd like to hear what collectors do or what they want to keep in tact.

if you don't want to start and host a thread like that i don't mind doing it, but as you know i have more than a few threads and would love to see some other good threads like WOODWORKING 101 that i suggested that Jim started and other threads where members that know more than i are hosting it.

I have heard that leaving a damp paper towel with Simple green on it will remove any overspray on a sign and i've only tried that on a couple things so far and it worked ok. it removed the overspray and left the original label or paint.

SMOKESHOW: i meant to post a long time ago saying your wall of tools is AMAZING. i couldn't give up that much wall space, but happy to see you can and looks like it's filling up with some quality stuff. I love the labels!! WELL DONE!!

LOB: i think a member on GJ makes and sells those and he posted up a couple versions earlier on this thread. would be a great addition if the label is missing or you don't care about a partial label though. I think that member lives about 8 hours north of you 4 hours south of me in the middle of Oregon someplace.

These are my favorite style sockets that I have in my tool collection. Anerican quality at it's finest. I think I may need to start collecting a set. I have quite a few brands that don't do much for me but I see some people love them.

Check it out, I got the 1/4 in today. its pristine condition! I wish my other two were as nice as it is! $30 to my door.

These are my tools, there are many like them, but these are mine.

Everything is for sale if you have enough money.

Thank you sir! I enjoy the wall every time I walk into the garage!

In reference to the simple green on tool boxes...I did try it once and it started to eat the paint on a Pressteel I have. I noticed it quickly and took it off otherwise it would have completely stripped the paint... For sure be careful with it :) On a plvmb mini box which holds my 9/32 drive socket set, I cleaned it up and rubbed it down with a very light coat of pb blaster... That was 6 months ago and it has not stripped the wrinkle paint or hurt it.. I posted the before and after pictures a ways back in this thread.

^ That's why I posted the note above. I've had some bad experiences trying to "clean" old stuff with modern-day cleaning products.
Remember the decals you used to put on your model cars were delicate little things that you just soaked in water for about 20 seconds and then carefully laid them in place. I wouldn't imagine those decals affixed to the inside lids on old socket sets would be much different. Maybe I'm completely wrong there - I don't know.
I'd think best thing - if you were going to experiment with some cleaning solution or chemical - would be to try a tiny spot on the bottom of the box first.

Just my two cents.

That is tough I think they are 2 pieces the lever and the pawl. I think they are brazed together in the hole. Maybe someone else can confirm.

It has the springs, both levers and the cam all inside. If I get a selector I could use my tig I guess to stick it on there... seems the selectors in the kits have a small hole where you put them over the cams nub outside the ratchet body..

Your best bet is to get a proto rebuild kit and install it... The half inch kit will install right in with no mods. If not maybe keep an eye out for another broken one that has your part you need !

Re: ~ Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

Im about 60mi south of Spokane, Specifically St. John.

Little bit of an old post (I'm catching up on my reading lol) I'm about an hour and a half north of Spokane, but I'll be driving through your neck of the woods regularly in another year or two, back and forth to WSU.

Brian-
If you go through Lincoln City, you need to check out "days catch" in town. It has used tools with good prices on them! Also stop at the "wildflower grill", their food is the best in town! Breakfast, lunch or dinner:beer:

RagT: l own a similar Plvmb toolbox and not sure i'd sell it for $150 if that helps you. yours looks like it hasn't been abused just used so you have my blessing to buy it if you like it.

Thanks for the input Drives! I see the top corners and the drawers all have spots and some corner welds... I guess ill have to see it in person. I want a good stack eventually for my collection, its outgrowing my waterloo carry around box.

RAG: it looks like maybe the lock's latch isn't there and not sure if that's welds, but you'll be able to tell in person. my drawers don't work the best so i need to do some work on them. i can tell you that box might weigh 60+ pounds so lift with your legs.

good luck

SMOKE: here's a few of the meals we ate at Wildflower last year when we were in Lincoln City. i think in 4 days i had 2.5 merion berry cobblers and both my wife and I gained about 4 pounds that trip. the owner is a great cook and she said she NEVER GOES OUT TO SEE THE OCEAN which is a bit odd to me, but i love her cookin.

making my mouth water just thinking about it.

cheers
