Not posted anything in here in ages, have picked up a fair few plomb tools since last time too, including some new old stock WF series stuff :bounce:

This however is an interesting one, it showed up on ebay, and i stuck a bid on it, even though i assumed it had been modified by someone.

Well turns out it wasn't, appears to be factory modified, as it has been plated after the alterations were done,

It originally was an 1145 1" combination wrench, but the ring end has been bent 90 degrees, and slotted, and the open end cut off and replaced with a T-bar type handle, it also has wright stamped into the handle, and next to that a section of the pebble finish has been ground off and the number 805483 hard stamped in, by hand by the looks of the misalignment of the numbers.

I'm presuming it was a contract order tool, for undoing a sensor or pipe fitting of some kind, and likely for aircraft or the military, as most of the plomb tools i have found have been ex military/airforce surplus. (have got some which have Pratt and Whitney PWA part numbers)

Would be nice to find out what it was for, and if anyone else has seen one, as I haven't been able to find anything similar online

Make sure when you get some that you also pick up some heavy duty elbow length rubber/vinyl gloves to use...if you get that stuff on your skin you can feel it start to burn right away:bounce: The gloves I bought are a gorilla brand that home depot sells. They are also great for degreasing things and I have used them multiple times. Make sure you also buy some throw away paint brushes that use natural fibers that are not made of vinyl or plastic bristles...once you are done with that stripping brush you will want to rinse it off and then throw it away as it is a one time use brush !

Ratchet, that Wright wrench would be post-WWII because they used a pebble wrench to modify. One inch opening is too large for spark plug lead nuts, so as you suspect, it would be for a tube nut or perhaps a sensor. During that time frame, the common Wright aircraft engines were the R-1820 and R-3350. The short legs on the T-handle indicate that the nut wasn't torqued very tight, so it wouldn't have been a flammable liquid line or something like that.

^ Not at all. I watch the selling prices on that stuff, and a lot of older so-called "collector" stuff goes for nutty prices. I had just expected it would have gone for more based on the overall trend.

Very interesting tool... Ratchet.

The P&C set had a major condition problem. The price doesn't reflect what one with a nice box would bring.

believe it or not... it went for only $46.99 + $11.85 shipping yesterday.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/17255007271...38.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rmvSB=true

I would have expected it to sell for much more considering some of the recent selling prices on the "collector" stuff.
Curse my luck. I forgot to follow up on it. Mine was the second highest bid at $45.99

Of course, there's no telling what the max bid was of the winner.

The aerosol aircraft stripper is ****. you need to get the stuff in the gallon jug that you paint on. Make sure it is actual air craft stripper brand and not a knock off as I have tried both and the original brand is the best! Or just try the jasco from home depot and that will melt some paint!

Here is an item number to the jasco. Just paste it into the home depot web site and a picture will come up of the can! Can't wait to see this come together! (mostly because I envy you :) )

Model # GJBP00203 Internet #202310300 Store SKU #589987

Havent got back to working on it yet, Im helping my dad do a motor swap in his model A coupe. got a crate motor in yesterday so its on back burner.... and killin me! lol

I don't care if you are putting a banger or a v8 in the A. Plvmb is more important :bounce: But seriously keep us posted as we all are envious of you!

haha well new motor is in the A as of about 30 min ago! Worked on the toolbox several hours last night got the front of the drawers and one side done and most of the top. Side panel was done first. Found a 1941 catalog to look through and it lists this box as a 9998 Master Tool Chest. It comes in Brilliant Chinese Red. But mine looks to have been on a military truck so it was Green. I'm thinking Red would be best to go back with. unless I leave it bare metal for time being.

What are you guys thoughts on refinishing it ? colors and such...

Oh, also how do the drawers come out ?

RAG: if i had done all that prep i don't think i go with RED even though that was one of the colors Plvmb used. i'd lean towards an ARMY GREEN and if you are able or want to how about a WRINKLE FINISH?

here's the makings one of our members used to put a WRINKLE FINISH on one of his old vises.

Kennedy boxes are one the boxes i know did the WRINKLE FINISH and even though Kennedy boxes are not my favorite looking boxes I do like their wrinkled finish brown colors.

Man thanks for the info Drives! the army green is still on the bottom. My painter buddy said he could match it. now I gotta find out what hed charge to paint it once I decide what color. That dark gray crinkle looks really nice as well.

I figured out how the drawers come out. It was evident after looking a bit.

Be prepared to be surprised. To retail paint a tool box you could be $500 so maybe he would hook you up for $250?? Just depends how good of friends you are  For sure you need to paint it the original green even though the red may have a larger mass appeal... Cant wait to see this one done. It will be a beauty.

As I am probably sure you know by now...the clips on the inside of the top are for holding plvmb speed wrenches...also the spring/clips to hold the lid up are factory  Can't wait to see this thing get done! It will be awesome

RAG: i haven't looked at my Plvmb box yet to take it apart so can you maybe post up a bunch of pictures of yours apart for me and maybe others that have one to restore? also what did you have to do to take the drawers off their slides?

did you ask your painters if they'd done wrinkle finish? also a powder coated Army Green might be another option.

good luck

ill talk paint when I get to see my buddy again in a few days prob. I got the drawers out.

1. Pull drawer all the way out. you will notice a hole in the side of the drawer.

2. Watching the hole, slide the drawer about halfway back intill you see a small screw
line up behind the hole in the slide.

3. Using a MAGNETIC tip slot screwdriver (or the washer could fall inside the slide), unscrew the tiny screw and take it and the washer out.

4. Slide the drawer straight out

Heres the clips on the underside of the lid, and the spring in the front right corner. It has tiny holes in the sides where it connects to the box. Not sure if factory or not .....

My dad knows a powdercoat guy real well. gonna go talk to him bout doing this thing green.

Those are nice Drives! Mine actually has a working lock and key also! does your top box have the spring in the front corner or the holes where it attaches ? I am liking that color green. Now to see if the powder coater can do the entire thing. Thats his business so I think it shouldn't be a prob. Just gonna be Cost now. May get by there tomorrow, ill keep yall updated.

Good choice, I like the original green. The 9998 boxes are somewhat rare to begin with but even more so in original green paint. The 9998 was discontinued temporarily during WW2. Has anyone ever seen an original paint green Toolmobile?

Rag, I really like your idea on the powder coating. My only hesitation with that would be is that powder coat is more brittle that paint and i would be worried the lid or around the drawers may chip over time with use?? The reason I ask is because these boxes are all friction slide and fit unlike todays boxes that are ball bearing and don't actually touch! Either way it will look great!

Had these for a little while but finally got round to photographing them

New old stock WF38 3/8 ratchets, and a wf77 11/16 3/8 drive uj socket and wf 78 3/8 drive, 3/4 UJ socket

a load of ww2 era Plomb seems to have turned up on ebay lately, (along with some other US makes) presumably army surplus, and as Plomb has little following in the uk, they dont go for much....

I also found some big iron. Possibly the biggest in my plomb collection. The tiles in the background are 12" for a size comparison.

Very nice find! I am about $45 into my plvmb pebble 3/4 in between buying a new proto rebuild kit and buying the broken ratchet but it works smooth as butter with some super lube inside it! Let me know if you need any internal parts for it as I have a few extras

Hold on to them screws if you got them. My last 3/4 Dr ratchet was missing on and they are a really odd size (12-24 I think with the counter sunk head).
