I would like a plvmb for sale thread in the vintage tool area . We would have to get the mods to approve it since there is already a general classifieds section . Are there any mods here who can approve this ? I would be willing to start it and I am thinking we would limit it to plvmb, proto l.a. And p&c ... Since this is the vintage section and the newer proto ,challenger and fleet could go in the general classifieds. What do you guys say ?

I love the idea but I would make it "Buy/Sell/Trade". That would give me an excuse to go through my stuff and sell or trade my extras.

I am new to the forum, so I'm guessing there's a rule about selling, buying and trading in any of the groups except classifieds. My collecting days are done, as I now have to move in a couple of years, plus my dad has 2 pole barns full of vintage tools and cars, I'll have to deal with. I'm for it with something as specialized as Plumb. Can a person direct someone to their eBay page?

You have some great stuff ! We can sell stuff on this site but have to post it in the classifieds section . We were talking about making a thread in the vintage tool forum ! I can assure you people would buy your stuff here !

I'm not a moderator, and I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but knowing the history (if you didn't live through the "Classifieds" war - and this was before they split off the vintage conversations in its own board - suffice it to say that this forum got more than a little crazy, and more than a little like a sales board rather than a discussion board), my guess would be no. The reluctance, I think, would be setting a precedence, and the fear of it quickly leading to requests for a separate Buy/Sell/Trade thread for pre-1950's vintage Snap-On, Williams, Duro-Chrome, etc. But don't let me stop you.

Twertsy had a very cool generic (all brands) virtual swap meet thread going for awhile, but it lost energy.

This place reminds me of a forced march - you just have to find a way to keep pace, and in formation, or fall out.

Picked up this guy over the weekend. It's an A PLOMB. It was in a box of wood working tools.

Sure looks like a wood gouge. Any opinions? Plomb made a lot of calking tools, but wood???

I'm convinced A. Plomb is not Plomb Tool Co. Alphonse was listed in every census from '20 on as a Tool maker, no employer. My assertion is that he'd make any tool someone would buy.

I didn't know anyone claimed that it was. The Burnes pamphlet, which the Van Natta Brothers derived much of their information from for their 'Plomb History' site, pointed out the separation. I didn't know anyone disagreed with that. Does AA agree or disagree?

The Van Natta Brothers site pointed out that he was out of the company as early as 1917, that he started his second company ("The A. Plomb Tool Co.") making mechanics tools marked "A. Plomb," that he was bought out by the California Tool Co. in 1927, and that they continued using the "A. Plomb" marking at least as late as 1931. They never published their sources though.

Maybe a separate A Plomb thread is in order.

Any catalogs out there?

All good info Greg, with nothing to back it up. Doesn't mean I think one way or another about their timeline, it just means the search for substantiating documentation continues. You, of all people, know how that goes!

Never seen or heard of an A. Plomb catalog but it doesn't mean they're not out there.

Indeed. I wish they had cited their sources, because it seems as if they used public records on the company transactions.

Speaking of research..., as you know, I've been deep diving on the 40's catalogs, prompted in no small part by the addition of Catalog No. 19 (no -A), to the Tool Archives site. I'm still getting a few ducks in a row, and I do wish I could get a rationale for the date on your timeline (9/30/45) for the first major use of pebble finish, but I'm convinced that I have legitimate questions about the way the collecting community seems to interpret, date, and sequence the publication of the 40's catalogs and what it might mean with respect to dating Plomb tool production. There are some serious contradictions and anomalies, especially across No. 19, No, 19-A, and the two different 19-R catalogs out there in the public domain, that are probably not seen as such for those without a more thorough understanding of War Production Board M and L Orders.

I'll start a new thread on that when I'm ready.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your research, Lugz! In the meantime, here is another group of pictures of my A. Plomb / Calif Tool flare nut wrench for those who may not have seen one. I believe that Twertsy has a very similar one. The last picture is a group of Plomb that I've picked up over the last few weeks.

Yes I have at least one Plomb catalog. When I find it, I'll post pictures.
Dino,
If only to save you some time, I think 3bay was wondering if there were any catalogs from the company that Alphonse purportedly started after he split off from Plomb Tool Co. proper (i.e., the alleged "A. Plomb Tool Co." later bought by California Tool Co.). Todd has several Plomb tool catalogs on his site (the Tool Archives), and there is a No. 19-R REPRINT on-line on the Bartlett Street site.

It is in fact a 3/8" punch and I was pretty excited until I measured it and found out that it was quite a bit too long to be a WW2 41-P-3644 4" long punch. Another case of close but no cigar!
Dang. Same as we've seen with some other Mfgrs. (Time to get the hacksaw or the grinder and polisher out! EDIT: Just kidding. What's the part number?)

On Plomb the 5/8 indicates the size of the shaft not the punch (or in this case apparently center punch) size. The 3/8" cut diamond point chisel has the part number 76 5/8. Confusing, isn't it. As soon as I saw the length of the punch I didn't check it out any further.

Plvmb for sale thread?

so.... should there be a Buy,Sale,or Trade Plomb Tools thread? Or is there one I don't know about ? It may be easier to have its own thread than to have adds lost in this thread. What do you guys think? We could put all our extras in there to help each other out and be a little more organized ?

I was thinking about this and I think the other comments about the tool section getting cluttered with classifieds is correct... I joined this forum in 2012 and a few years later they started this vintage tool forum. Before that the main forum was kinda messy and people kept getting the threads mixed up and where even replying in the wrong threads...I think what we may be able to do to keep this thread clean and the vintage forum clean is to just make a quick post here in this thread whenever we post plvmb in the classifieds. That way the thread does not get cluttered and we can still sell to each other on here! What say you guys?:headscrat

I've seen that before (the stock size instead of the tip size stamped in the shank), but I can't remember which mfgrs. Should've looked closer. Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever found a Plomb punch in the wild before. Well, at least both our eyes are okay for a little while longer! :)

Sounds like a plan. Also, If we could get every one to make a spreadsheet like the one I sent you.. we could all upload and update them to a single Google drive. Each one with the personas nickname from GJ and their email maybe ?Just a thought.

I used to have quite a few chisels and punches but they went to a good home.

If y'all uploaded your tools on Toolarchives, I gave you the capability to keep an inventory, AND, you can share it with whomever you like. Fills up the site and keeps your private inventory at the same time...........just sayin'

You can go to the wrench finder tool, find what you need or have, and tag it. If you tag it "I Have One" then it puts it in your inventory. If you tag it "I Need This Tool," it puts it in the needs list for all to see.

agreed!

Twertsy to the rescue!! I got a couple Plomb goodies in the mail and I have a guy calling me after 3 about a pile of old tools he wants to get rid of.. for $10!!
Hope that works out! would be a descent score on a rainy day!

Plomb 6 point 1/2 drive swivels
7474-H 7/16
7475-H 1/2
7477-H 5/8
7476-H 9/16
7479-H 3/4

Also picked up the 1/2 model Armstrong ratchet to match my 3/8. They sure look Plomb-ish. did Plomb make these for Armstrong? I cant find anything on them yet. No matter they match the 1/2 drive Armstrong sockets I scored at an Estate sale few weeks back. Just need a matching swivel and extensions now : ) oh and a Box.... and a speed wrench... and and and.... damn GJ....
